The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

It could toggle up to Legendary settings after that.

It would be fun to do some Legendary runs on a few maps with a strong two-man team. I locked onto a strategy on Windward last night (during a 200k solo achievement run) that I liked. It was on Normal, but I had 10 lives after the second set when I ended the game. I suspect two on Legendary could run at least as long, and rack up a much higher score.

I'd be up for some Legendary Firefight. I made it to the 4th wave doing solo Legendary on Security Zone.

Well. Forth is still pretty impressive. For ODSTs very limited mulitiplayer. I knew it would never be the game with the most online activity, but I never knew it would come as close as the forth. Kudos!

But as soon as MW2 comes out, it will have the most online activity for a very long time. I cant blame it. MW2 looks pretty badass. And to tell the truth, I am more excited for MW2 than Reach. Probably because I already read the book, and Steven Spielburg is making a Halo Reach movie coming in the next 1-3 years or so.

As I said before. Kudos Bungie! I Heart you guys!

Poor guy, his heart is in the right place...

I'd take no movie over a Spielberg Halo movie.

Also, guys, this might be old hat, but check out Mike and Cheese - I'm A General In Halo 3. Will make you feel better when you get beat. =)

Anyone up for Deja Vu or some matchmaking? I've been trying to play some Lone Wolves today to get the Mongoose Mowdown achievement. Dang it's annoying. So few eligible maps.

woot I get paired up against a team of four 5-star generals and I get a Brig Grade 3, Colonel Grade 2 and a Force Colonel on mine.

Think I'm going to make an alt this weekend just to dump on retarded people because I sure as hell can't find any fun games on my main account.

Oh... wonderful. Spread the circle of stupidity.
I too find when MM goes like that a real pain. I god damn hate it. And it happens too often for such a populated game! Doesn't mean I become the very thing I loathe to enjoy the game. Alts are pathetic.

Speaking of stupidity and bruised egos, Dax's ban is until the 3rd of November.

:lol

One problem I notice in MM is like I'll go in alone in MM and I'll get paired 4v4 with a team of 2 up against a team of 3.

The team of 3 is all 50s the team of 2is a 50 and a 45. We get a 50(me) and another 45 while their random is a 50.

To even it they should have given their random 50 to us and our random 45 to them so we each have 3 50s and a 45. Skillwise that makes sense.

All our ranks in the specific playlist are all pretty even and even looking at those numbers would make more sense to give their random 50 to us and have our random 45 with them, but it doesn't do that.

If they stick with keeping a Highest Skill rating and don't go back to a modified H2 system in Reach. Which hopefully they do since H3's ranking system was trashy as hell (Backflip not being a 50 even tho he played every SWAT game his brother played to get his 50 being a prime example) then I hope Highest Skill gets factored harder into matches being made. Not even sure if it currently is beyond each division of ranking Colonel, Brig, General, all those other bad ones.

They're fun. You haven't lived until you've had 4 different people get perfections in one BTB game. Try it sometime.

Dude you have no Halo Honor! :lol

Bungie artist's detail at work! What these guys created is astounding.

Dax is banned, eh? He should know better. At GAF you can bash and troll 360 games all you want, but if you disagree in a PS3 thread your ass is cooked.

Ghaleon and Wu play solo eh? Why don't you fellas invite some friends? I know I'm never online, but I'd love to play Firefight. I've only played one game of the stuff and it was crazy fun. It makes me sad that no one is ever playing it.

When I was on last night, no one else on my list was playing ODST. If I see anyone on, I'll be sending invites. :p

The sheer length of Firefight games can be awkward. I've gotten invites 45 minutes into solo runs and had to debate whether to cut them off or not.

Sadly true.

But probably a good thing with all the random matchmaking/netcode bashing that goes on here, if you were to voice an opinion like that in a certain other thread, you probably would get banned.

Oh, I wasn't complaining. I'm glad that the Halo threads are mostly autonomous. All the criticism (both in civilised and uncivilised fasion) would ruin the population of this thread.
I guess it's a nice trade off. We leave them alone they leave us alone.

Yea, that's my problem, too. This past year I've had almost no free time. My only time to play Xbox is on Friday and Saturday nights.. All my other tme is spent doing schoolwork, attending club meetings, and playing golf (occationally- I'm terrible at it). But when I do want to play there is never anyone available. I just recently played my first Firefight match with Five and Juices last week and it was a lot of fun. I wish I could do it more often.

Eh, he was dragging the lure. No need to go into a hype thread and make a concerted effort to make sure people aren't getting too excited about a game.

Ooh, pretty.

For anyone needing achievements in ODST/Halo 3(might not be able to help, I'm pretty burned out on Matchmaking/Custom games), I can always help out sometime tomorrow or Friday.
congrats on member status.
I might be willing to do endure this weekend. Don't plan anything around it though. :P

After playing against this guy (he quit early) with a friend, we both recieved two (same) messages from this guy (as I imagine many other folks tonight have).

Now, I don't want to rush into things, I mean, I would like to own a free Microsoft, the membership stuff is just icing on the cake really... :lol

Ding. Especially when you are active in hype threads for games on a different system.

Speaking of hype, I'm gonna go shoot a bunch of aliens in the face.

Edit: I'd just like to note that if you are going to make a daytime map, make all of the map visible. Both Last Exit and Crater have spawn room far too dark, and toggling the VISR between areas is maddening. I've having a hell of a time on both those maps solo - absolutely frustrating. These are not fun to play on.

There are a host of design decisions that really stick out as being a break for the worse in ODST, compared to previous Halo games. It gets a lot of big picture stuff right, and really dropped a lot of details, IMO. There are moments when I'm just shocked that certain things got through (beeping health, blurred red HUD for damage, tons of stuff to get snagged on, poorly lit areas mixed with bright ones - the list goes on).

Theres a difference between trolling and being a critic. Even the mod who banned him in that same thread is one of the more vocal critics of the game so far.

Go for it, wouldn't want to turn down a whole Microsoft.

This.
It's common sense not going into a place where people are really excited about something and trying to bring everyone's excitement down.

edit - member! yay! Was starting to think I had been perma-juniored. :)

Yea I told Dax today that he can't say anything he wants outside of this thread lol. Sadly, I think it's true.

I finally nailed Last Exit last night (370k on Normal) - the key (for me) was using ghosts most of the time. (Inside is still safest for buggers, but as long as you remember that your ghost plasma takes a little while to catch up to your current orientation, they're quite doable with a ghost.)

The blurred red HUD is definitely a killer for me - but I'm finding the rest of your issues to be either manageable, or even good. The beeping health (at least in Firefight) adds a touch of difficulty after a while; the noise gets irritating enough to affect your responses. You might say "yes, that's what I'm complaining about" - but if you were fighting with a gash in your arm, that would affect your responses, as well. :lol

And the stuff to get snagged on? I'm not sure what we're talking about here; you can certainly trip over debris, and a ghost can be flipped if you back over a trashed car... but that's how it SHOULD be. I'm not finding corners that keep me from going forward, or walls with invisible outjuts (I'm thinking specifically of the nasty bugs that were in the first iteration of Certain Affinity's Tombstone - there were invisible walls you could stand behind and be immune to gunfire). I dunno - it seems (to me) that the stuff you can get stuck on, you SHOULD get stuck on.

I haven't had a lot of trouble with dark-light transitions - but I think this is simply because I sort of EXPECT there to be issues. I WANT the dark areas to be dark enough to need VISR mode to be useful (so that if I forget to turn it on, I'm at a serious disadvantage), and I WANT the light areas to wash out my VISR badly (so that if I forget to turn it off, I can't see anything) - this feels more real to me. I can see how that's just a personal preference, though. :)

Halo 3, You can see your shields go down in a bar but can't see your health go down.

In ODST You cant see your shields go down (stamina apparently) and then you CAN see your health go down.

Combine the two and you'd have the perfect system. Kind of Like Halo CE the FIRST HALO THEY HAD.

Remember when i said I was finally going to get Live?

Well I'm getting it today
If anyone needs help with any Halo 3 and/or ODST achievements, friend me

GT: Monolith Gui

Just lemme know you're from Gaf

Where are the screens from?

Honestly I think putting the BR in the game would've made the game far too easy. The slightly weaker weapons add alot to the challenge, especially taking on Brutes.

Bungie are bad liars. Bad Repulsive liars.

Awesome. I submit that BR's in Reach be limited to the cinematics as well. Every time a cinematic starts, show the player holding a BR as default, regardless of what weapon they're actually using. (Think the AR in the first Halo.) Just don't put it in the game. :D

I can't seem to open the Quicktime videos in the HBO cutscene library - I get an Error-2048 (not a file that Quicktime understands).

Hrm... what version of QuickTime are you using?

(Those files were encoded with h.264; they require at least QT7, I think. I dragged my feet on switching from the Sorenson S3 codec for a lot of years... but I was finally convinced last year to do it.)

Edit: some quick googling suggests that this might be fixed by changing the extension to .mp4.

Yeah I did that search too, but decided to try checking for updates first. I was on 7.5.something. Two reboots (Windows installer crashed) and two updates later, they're playing. All is well. :D

Updated the OP with the 200k+ barrier for ODST being broken in the UK. NPD is today.
