The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

This is exactly how I feel about it. The other day I was playing MW2 and I was kicking ass. I was getting all kinds of kill streaks and dropping all kinds of shit on people. It was awesome. But then, yesterday I matched up against a team. There were predator missiles and harrier jets every 30 fucking seconds. It was slaughter. I guess you could say that about every game, no one likes getting their asses kicked, but this one rewards the ass kickers like crazy.

Just picture in Halo if you went on a killing spree, you got overshields and a rocket launcher. It'd be fucking insane. You would get campers all the time, people trying to keep a spree alive. It happens in CoD.

Doesn't MW2 have a losing streak counter perk to balance it up a bit?

Regardless, these sorts of things would mess up Halo badly. I'd rather them introduce a few dozen tiers of equipment, anti-gravity and a big head mode (known as the Juices perk =P) than rip off MW2.

I think that once you use a streak reward it should end your streak that way there is a risk reward for keeping your streak alive, you could get something sweet or you could die and lose it all. In my current setup I get a care package that granted could be as little as ammo but could also be some crazy aerial assault, then one kill later is followed by a missile I get to guide down from the sky that shows exactly where the enemy on the map is and then in just 2 more kills I get to call in a helicopter. That is completely ridiculous for a competitive MP, once I hit that 4 kill mark all I am doing is just camping because I only need 1 to 2 more kills to get my next set of bots to do my work for me.

Edit: Also I would like to preorder 5 bungle shirts :)

Losing streaks don't really do anything to balance things, they are just little bonuses given to you for sucking :lol

For the competitive Halo community, I doubt they would like anything of the type in the game. It's fun to use in Modern Warfare but it also is not fair since it's so random and often can't be countered. Oh look I just got 10 more kills in less than a minute, thanks kill streak now I'm l33t. And too often when one team takes a lead in a MW game and does well, the kill streaks just further push them into guaranteed wins.

Other shooters have tried killstreak type rewards before MW, like point bonuses, or special upgrades that were not game changers.

Team Throwback has taken a huge hit in population due to MW2. :(

When ODST first came out the playlist was lucky to average 3K players, after about a week or two it went down to 1K, I'm like a level 37 and it was impossible to find a match even by myself the last time I tried.

How is this any different than playing a team of 4 in Halo by yourself? Chances are you'll get spawn killed to oblivion and the match will be miserable.

I'm not saying Reach should copy MW2's killstreaks and the like, but invent something that works in the Halo gameplay like that. I never understood why equipment effected the people that threw it, it made the Flare & Radar Jammer completely useless. Like I said, it was a step in the right direction, but the execution was lacking.

Currently ranges from 600-800 now.

Killstreaks are the most ass-backwards mechanic in online gaming. Reward the team who's probably already ahead by giving them an unstoppable momentum towards victory. In my experience games are rarely even remotely close and while it's awesome being able to use 3 kills to guarantee another 3-10, it sucks when you're on the other side and getting blown away from fairly unpredictable powerups. Please, don't put that shit in my Halo, it's not innovation, it's utter bullshit to give a game with little variety a haphazard sense of it.

If they only things they could think of adding to the Halo formula is shit that rewards camping and overly cautious play any further, I'd rather have my vanilla Halo.

I agree with the pink one, keep that s**t as far away from Halo as possible.

I would like something similar to MWs perks or some kind of exp progression, maybe you could unlock equipment or choose different starting weapons. Killstreaks i am not sure of although i really like the idea of blowing someone uo with a mac round shot it could really spoil the game.

the main thing i hope that reach multiplayer does differently from halo 3 is more options for dress up. i love playing dress up in games, if mw2 had dress up like rainbow 6 vegas 2 i would have bought day one but it doesn't so i'll probably just borrow the game. halo 3 started it but i want to see more armor permutations... a lot more. i want the option to bedazzle my spartan if i so please. so urk since you didn't give me reach screens on my birfday but if you double the amount of permutations then all will be forgiven.

this is not a joke post... dont judge me.

-I want foot armor
-I want patterns like camo and checkered (for example)-Rank actually shown on Spartan in MM (Maybe)

I want full customization of my Spartan basically.

I'm all for having a game suck my dick for pressing a button, but seriously?

But we did flip the four mics on and coax a trio of designers into the comfy confines of our close quarters “recording studio”, made sure they sidled up nice and close to one another, and then forced them to commentate on some of the levels they designed and the accompanying achievements they concocted, eyes open - A Clockwork Orange style.

We were calling it Mystery Science Theater 2552. Jim called it “Urk telling dick jokes.” Don't worry, it’ll be bestowed with a more fitting and proper name before it’s all said and done.

Either way, the audio is all laid down and being mixed up real nice by Jay. Our Visual Design team is marrying it up with some companion visuals—lovingly produced by our Test team who recently powered through the Vidmasters for the hojillionth time—and soon, the whole hot mess should be dropping into ODST’s Intel menu. We’ll let you know when it goes live.
Very cool. Glad they're doing more of these vids, especially from the designers perspectives.

And neato on reiterating Reach suffz for by Santa Time.

Bungie and Bungle shirts are on the way.

Day 1. Now, what about a Bungie flag?

Oh, and I can't wait for that level commentary. Always love to see what goes through developers heads when making a game, and to see their thoughts about how it turned out.

I know I was sipping the haterade for the latest ViDoc that came out for ODST, but level commentary is so sweet. I hope more companies follow Valve and do this.

But I want to believe in BS; help me, Bungie, believe in BS. :P

I'll play Throwback some time if you ever need a body. That goes for Ram, too. That (Objective) is my favorite playlist (set of gametypes). I wish they would add more variants and maps.

So my oldest daughter is playing basketball this year in school. She got her jersey in today. The number she requested? 7.

Proud papa is proud.

It's different because the team was rewarded by the game for playing like a team. Halo doesn't do that. Sure, if you have map control and are working as a team, there's a good chance you'll get the rockets and over shield, but you still need to go to the vulnerable spot on the map where this pickups are placed to get them. They're not just automatically given to you. When I got matched against the entire Str8 Rippin team on Pit Flag MLG, we got shit on. They took almost every power up and power weapon and spawn raped us until they capped all 3 flags. I don't feel that that is cheap. It's not impossible to break setups like that. We were out played and those were the results. I have more respect for an ass kicking like that than some doucher camping and getting rewarded insanely because of it.

I played against a team on that Mansion map on MW2 and the team just chilled in the house and raped everyone around them. Without even moving they were able to get on their streaks and rain death from Helicopters and fighter jets and shit. To me, that's fucked up. It's fun as shit when you have it though. I'm not saying though that they should be weakened after getting a streak though. I just think nothing should happen besides you getting points and shit. Also, it might have something to do with the matchmaking still being broken(PS3 version, I don't know about the 360 (true skill?)) Those guys had sick guns with the thermal scopes and shit. They were like in the 40's and 50's. I was a level 14 lol.

I love how Halo as always handled killing sprees and it took CoD to make me realize that. Now, I don't know if there's a custom game mode that allows you to deactivate killstreaks in MW2 or something like that but that seems like something I would much rather play. Just straight up shooting. But...I don't play CoD competitively like I play Halo. I just play to mix it up from Halo once in a while.

Halo rewards you with a win. There is no teamwork to speak off in MW2. A team that has a bunch of people dominating is just because they have better players with epic weapons. There is no teamwork involved. I hate the killstreak system. Get 5 kills and then you are pretty much guaranteed 10 more. And wtf is with controlling the helicopter. It draws huge red boxes around enemies. No skill whatsoever.

The amount of customization is awesome, though.

Pretty sure there was a ton of teamwork tonight in all the MW 2 matches I played with Omlet, Spud, and Ram. Calling out when people were capturing the different territories in Domination, where people generally were, when an aircraft (helicopter, harrier, etc) was up and who was taking it out, assisting flag carriers, etc, etc.

Might be different playing with randoms, but when isn't that the case in a majority of the matches you play online in any console game?

Edit: Oh, and you get the best weapon in the game from the very start. The FAMAS. ;)

This. Dress up is awesome...

But along with adding more customizations I would also love it if Bungie kept the system open so that in the future they could add more in title updates and map packs... etc.

This.

I love the FAMAS. I got my silencer on it, it's awesome.
I'm using the SCAR right now with an ACOG scope
I just started playing so no FAL :(

I guess it's because I play with randoms that I never see any teamwork. I just played with Niterider and his friend and we had a great strategy going and dominated. I guess if you're with friends then there is teamwork. Sorry for being a hypocrit. :(

I'll be on GAF customs tonight. It's gonna be epic. I hope we get enough guys.
