The Official Halo 3: ODST Thread

just got this today, and am LOVING it. im by no means a huge halo fan, and i havent played halo MP since the halo3 beta which was ok i guess but im an SP player first and foremost. i didnt really enjoy h3 campaign all that much, but this, to me, is the best halo game since halo 1. anyone else agree?

No... I don't agree. ODST single player campaign story is well told (or at least, is told in an original way). But gameplay wise, it's not better than Halo 3 campaign. Halo 3 campaign is longer, somewhat more varied, and at the end, I believe the spartan shield mechanics are more solid, so I believe is better.

My initial reaction was much like yours, but multiple playthroughs have kind of brought it back a bit. I love certain aspects of ODST like the return of fall damage and the addition of the beastly pistol, but I don't really have the desire to jump into the campaign like I still do with Halo 3.

Midship, Lockout, and The Pit from the start of H3 Reach please. The rest can be added later but as the last Halo game it should wrap up in a retardedly cumbersome unit of every Halo remake done in Reach no matter the cost to us.

Enjoyed ODST much more. The not having shield made the combat more dangerous, less running and gunning. I actually would feel threatened by enemies instead of just being a killing machine always going forward murdering everything. The combat just felt so much more like actual combat this time around with wanting to sometimes take other routes and hide. The gameplay while similar did greatly change in ODST and just felt so much more satisfying compared to the formula that to me got stale with 3. ODST in pretty much every way seemed superior.

I think ODST did some things better than the other games in the series (namely, story telling and the combat design), and some things worse (the HUD, and some of the level and mission designs). Overall it's a very good game, but it left me rather unsatisfied. Like it added up to less than the sum of its parts, whereas the previous games felt like something greater than the sum of their levels.

The music raised the bar, again.

Its interesting to see the extremely positive reaction to this game which has dwindled as the weeks have gone by. My theory is that people just aren't playing the game much because of the lack of matchmaking and the burnout from Firefight matches that last hours. And this in turn, shifts the overall view people have on the game.

Thats just my theory. I still stand by my claim of this being a Halo Greatest Hits title. The two major flaws were the lack of matchmaking and $60 MSRP instead of $40-$50. It aggregate scores would've been much much higher (just look at GOW Collection). It is a short game, without a robust multiplayer, and if had been value-priced, it would've been treated as such. I think theres a major perception issue. I mean, for a game that was built in year, it definitely blew away my expectations.

ODST put itself in a bad spot IMO with the length of the game. It's much longer than an add-on and that makes it easier for people (myself included) to judge it as they would a full-game. When you consider the short amount of time, the small crew they had, and the game's original plan as a simple add-on, ODST is a great achievement. It may be an obvious assumption, but I think ODST will teach Bungie more about what to do right in Reach than H3 will.

Can anyone tell me if the netcode for campaign or firefight in ODST works well with high ping? For instance, anyone in australia tried playing with someone in europe or USA? Was it still playable?

The single player is what was positive of the game, of course it's going to dwindle. Firefight even with matchmaking was surely not going to have the longevity of full blown MP experience which is just H3 again.

I will atone for my sins by worshiping in front of my Tom "Tsquared" Taylor shrine tonight. I will also burn small Shishka effigies as a sacrifice to the gods of 4-shotting.

So I just played my first game on Halo 3 in about 2 months and there are 3 things I realised:

1. AR starts still suck. Even on the new maps.
2. Randoms don't know how the fuck to play objective games.
3. I still got it.

Fuckin' bungietweets teasing the ass out of Reach's musical score. :(

Where is the 12th?
They should have kept the trailer a secret until there was only a couple of days left... ugh. These 3 weeks will last forever. : /

How long is the clip? I have two minutes available. I can always render it for you.

It's just like 15 seconds or so, I'll post it up later, it's nothing spectacular, but an exterm is an exterm!

Someone needs to blast "Let Me Ride" in the studio. Marty will run away screaming.

"Dashing through the snow
In a one gun open hog
O'er the fields we go
Slaying all the way
Bells on BoB tails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A Slaying song tonight"

I suck

Like the cut outs of each people at the bottom.

First thing I thought of was Mystery Science Theater 3000. Too bad the Halo 3 Limited Edition's commentary wasn't like that.

Domino Theory said:
K, that way of doing a ViDoc is awesome. Commentary FTW.

Would love to see Bungie have this kind of commentary for levels/cutscenes/Halo 3 and ODST in Reach, but we're going to probably only start seeing it done in their New IP (if they even do commentary in game like Valve..).

Wow all reused double exp's and 7 on 7, plus no actual changes besides restrictions which doesn't matter to anyone who has ODST. So he basically did nothing this month for H3.

Good job! Keep up the good work. :lol

As such, we’re comfortable with doing things a little differently, and will be removing all DLC restrictions from the following playlists as part of the December Matchmaking update:

* Team SWAT
* Team Snipers
* Team Doubles
* Squad Battle
* Rumble Pit
* Multi-Team
* Social Big Team
:D

I wish Lars wasn't standing so close to Shishka.
Seriously, they totally look like lovers in that pic... :lol
not that there's anything wrong with that

And hey, you guys hired Tim Schaffer. Good stuff.

So I guess that update was the death knell for matchmaking updates. Please lord let someone else control the Reach playlists.

Do they give advice on how to find people to play with for the 4 player ones?

Not really. Just talk about how the ledge on Halo after 343 Guilty Spark for Annual was the hardest part, how people play cautious on Deja Vu, and how Endure used to be on Legendary for 7 Sets.

there's a joke in there somewhere :D

EDIT:
The Double EXP Weekends for December are:

Ranked Grifball (Heroic/Legendary Required)
Prepare to Drop (Halo 3: Mythic Required)
Mythic Brawl (Halo 3: Mythic Required)
Rocket Race (Heroic/Legendary Required)

Big oops, or do i have to quickly make a Grifball court on Ghost Town? :lol
