The Official Halo 3 Thread

Some guy's played blackout:

Overall it feels slightly smaller. I'm not sure if that's due to map design, Halo 3's movement/physics being different from Halo 2's, or a bit of both. The top of BR tower, though, feels significantly bigger.

The jumps have changed drastically, which I suppose can be construed as good or bad depending on your perspective. Some of the cool/difficult jumps have been made extremely easy, while others have been outright removed. I wasn't super hardcore into H2 so I might be missing some jumps, but these are what my friend and I noted.

- Top of lift to the bottom of BR tower is extremely easy.
- Side of BR tower to lower lift is extremely easy.
- Elbow up to Snipe 2 is impossible. The doorframe is gone.
- Elbow to the back of Snipe 1 is still possible.
- Middle (helipad) to handrail to Snipe 3 is still possible, possibly a little harder due to the shape of the new handrail.
- Snipe 1 to middle platform is now impossible without a grenade or equipment jump simply due to height.
- Jumping into and out of the window in the library (now named the "barracks") is impossible, as the window is now solid glass.
- Slide jumping into the sword window is now impossible, as this window is also solid glass.

We've found a couple new jumps but they involve grenades and/or equipment so they may or may not prove useful in a real game. It is now possible to grenade/equipment jump up from sword into the library/barracks. It is also possible to equipment jump up from shotgun into low middle (below the helipad). I think this might turn out to be useful because the power drainer spawns right there. I've been practising it a bit and I can get the drainer, drop down, get shotgun, then jump back up top pretty quickly.

Do we know what time the map pack will be out on Tuesday?

You can't. And Frankie confirmed somewhere on the MLG Forums that you can't remove the window in Forge.

I've used the sight for about a month or so. Really really cool.

158 hours of multiplayer? Can that be right? Maybe it clocks time in the lobby and such? *does math* Oh snap, that is right...

Man if my wife hears about this site I'm dead!

That's awesome. lol.

Why the fuck would they take that out? It wasn't hurting anyone.

You see that just doesn't make any sense, I can see shifting the Snipe 1 doorway, removing a short jump or two to Snipe 2. But come on, that was a perfectly functional shooting window form library to Top of lift and to top middle during hill games.

I'd like to hear a justification or at least one good reason to close that window up.

If the artists are so "artsy" and they dont want to make direct ports, then tell them to get a fucking job as a painter or work with clay.

Jesus. It's a window, FFS.

AM: Most of the jumps, even the crazy ones from Halo 2, are there. However a few are tweaked or removed and there is one spot that was altered that makes it less easy to lock down a specific quadrant of the map. Also, the small platforms next to the air vent are at slightly different elevations.
http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=13413

Dunno if that's referring to that spot, or the changed doorways in the shots Cocop posted. Odds are good all of the changes they made came from testing; you know, Bungie not wanting to make the best map they can. You'll know how it works in five days. That kind of vitriolic cheap shot over a window, when you haven't played the map, is pretty silly. It's a design decision, and stems from Bungie not just doing geometry ports and cranking it out.

Also, heat maps are up.

It does seem like a strange decision tho. I remember tossing some choice grenades into that room through that very window. Little things like that really defined how Lockout played (not a lot of 'safe' zones).

I'm not jumping on the complain train yet though!

No that is not referring to that window. The window being covered makes it easier to hold down the library with the oddball now.

If they have the oddball in the library with someone on back BR ramp and someone on Open Ramp you are fucked, hard style, in your bad place.

And dont' tell me when I'm being silly. This is the internet, everything's stilly. look at urk.

Nothing wrong with that - it's going to have a change on gameplay and I'm curious why it was done as well. I mostly took exception to the cheap shot at the artists for not giving him a direct geometry port (for starters, it's a design decision, not an artistic one). The whole sense of indignation at any change this close to release is just mystifying to me.

Well Ghaleon, it's just risky. You take the most beloved Halo map ever, you bring it to Halo 3, call it a port, and start changing stuff. Yes I know these changes are minor, but isn't the gameplay of a map ultimately the culmination of its minor elements?

Once you start to remove/change minor elements of a map, you start to CHANGE THE MAP.

Possible changes from Lockout (Thanks Drew from Ascendant Justice):

- Cover removed at Elbow, and the "Tombstones" removed from Sniper Mid.
- GIANT MOTHERFUCKING BR TOWER.
- Large increase in size to Sniper Mid.
- Ramp from Sniper Bottom to Sniper Mid downsized significantly.
- Large railings of some sort around edges of Top Mid.
- WINDOW REMOVED FROM LIBRARY.
- The bend next to Mid BR walkway completely removed, now one straight ramp.
- Library door now the size of a small child (much shorter and more wide).
- Walkway from Bottom Grav Lift to Bottom Mid changed significantly. Now mostly flat, with stairs, and also a small soccer field underneath.
- Walls all around the map are a lot shorter.
- Green Room is now a complete and utter death trap. No cover at all, and no way to bounce grenades out of it.
- The size increase seems to be map-wide. Most walkways are much larger, and Top Grav Lift is also fatter than it used to be.
- Jump from Elbow to Sniper Mid now impossible.
- Seems like it's now possible to toss grenades clear over the Sniper Tower.
- Sniper Tower Carney Hole removed?
- BR Top now very lopsided, and the walls at the back have been cut short by quite a bit.
- No more camping in Bottom Mid, it looks like. Toward the hole, at least. The ledges in the corners have been removed (see attached screens).
- Bottom Lift and Green Room now an M.C. Escher painting (see attached screens).
- Also, WTF happened to the Magnum spawns. They're much lower, and much longer than they were before (again, attached screens).
- Sniper Tower now small enough to jump on top of? Invisible barriers, hopefully?
- Middle glass removed (R.I.P. "Below Glass"). No longer able to detect campers.
- A new sudden drop in elevation has been added between Bottom Mid and Bottom Sniper.

Lockout was Lockout for its subtle love-spots and I'm just worried because I dont want the map to be shitty.

You need to relax because this is a forum and people can bitch and complain about whatever they want. I'm sorry if my cheap shots to the designers make you upset.

What an odd statement. If anything, I think you need to relax. Grab a cup of tea, or something, and just wait till Tuesday, 'kay?

It wasn't a death trap before?

A bigger BR tower and no window in library? Fine by me. Not going to break the map. Jesus people.

You can add multiple tags to your Halo3.Junk account. So Ramirez could add Trasher's and Nutter's tags, for example, and they'd be able to look through the stats and such without having their own account. The only thing you'd miss is not having a signature.

Anyone decent want to play some doubles or TS tonight, UK time? I'm on the GAF Halo list, and trying to get from 42 to 45.

Ah, decent and 42ish, this is not the player you are looking for, had you said 20ish, then I would have been all ears :lol

There's nothing wrong with questioning changes in any level of detail, or getting worked up about design decisions. That's what hardcore fans do. It's natural, like sunshine and sex and bananas. I get a kick out of it, and that kind of stuff is partly why I like this place (and AJ). But I stay out of other corners of the internet because I don't like the stuff that goes down. MLG forums, gamefaqs, you know the list. The kind of stuff we make fun of here, frequently. So it surprised me that you'd stoop to that level, as if you take these design decisions personally and shot back in kind. You know me. I have no problem being hard on Bungie (Halo 3 story am fail), but I don't make it personal. That's where I draw the line. I was just surprised that you don't.

I am down...I would say I am decent...some on the board can confirm...I am a 43 in TS looking to 50 one day.

Uhhh, Nutter, I just watched the most boring video of you on Guardian that Urk posted. In the video you try to shoot someone halfway across the map with a mauler, and that was the only thing that appeared noteworthy to me. :lol

Well i've been here for a while ghaleon and you should know me better than to throw me in the category of halo 3 bitchers.

Do i fly off the handle every once in a while, sure (SNOWBOUND SHIELD DOORS ARE POSSIBLY ONE OF THE WORST GAMEPLAY DESIGN ELEMENTS EVER CREATED IN ANY GAME EVER!) but I am far from a bitching fan.

I take it personal cause I dont like seeing halo get shit on every week by cod4. It's only bungie's fault and i want them to redeem themselves. This map pack has the potential to bring everyone back who left for cod4, and if it doesn't then halo3 am owned by cock off duty. modirn gayfuckshit.

Why does it really matter? It's not like being no. 2 is anything to be ashamed of, with over 100 other titles that can go online.

Hey lets bitch about a map that we have never played!

Come on guys this isn't bnet over here.
but we have played it.. in Halo 2, when it was called Lockout.
People are "bitching" about (possible?) changes made to it that might make it less awesome than it was in H2. For all we know it might make it better, but I find that hard to believe since imo it was pretty much perfect in H2. From the sound of it, they've removed some of the little things that made me love it so much.
But we'll see next week, maybe they've added new things to love about it.

I don't see Halo as a sports team, cause the enjoyment with Halo is not seeing the sales number/popularity/beating other games/whatever, but actually playing the game and Bungie being really great towards its fans.

NJ x Falkor said:

I'd rather the Bears be no. 1, but quite frankly there's a ton of other teams that they're better than, and I'm cool with that.

It's just my mindset, though. I couldn't care less where Halo is in terms of popularity. I'm gonna play as long as I can do it online.

I understand that, but I like to see something that I really enjoy get the popularity and the recognition that it deserves.

Yes. I like to know that more people are watching the Giants - Cowboys came than any other game that week.

So.....uh....Urk, sent you some more clips for the failtage as well as a funny one or two.

can't wait for Tuesday....damn paper due, though. Alisdair, if by some chance you're still on when I get on tonight, I'd love to play some doubles, but I don't think our timezones will work.

I bought a XBox with Halo 3 yesterday. So far, I'm having lots of problems with the controls (I only had a Wii before).

How the hell do I collect ammo? It annoys me that I always have to throw away my weapon when I'm out of ammo.

Was it a mistake to set the difficulty on easy? Even for a noob like me? It feels like the game plays itself (my buddies simply kill all enemies).

It receives a ton of recognition and popularity already man. Great reviews, ridiculous sales, incredible live playerbase. You can always want more, I guess. But a Halo fan shouldn't be bothered with that at this point.

It's not like Arrested Development, which is incredible but got canned because there weren't enough viewers.

So is this your first fps? Your first gamepad fps? If so, give yourself some time.

Some of the covenant weapons you can't reload. Lots of weapons you can reload and just have to walk over one you see laying on the ground to add ammo.

Throwing away weapons is part of the gameplay though, chosing what you'll bring along and leave behind depending on the situation.

If you feel like you're not doing anything of skill, bump up the difficulty and try normal or higher.

You collect ammo by walking over the same gun. Like, if you have a BR, you collect BR ammo by finding another BR and just passing over it.

You can't collect ammo for plasma weapons.

Yeah, Easy is pretty easy.

Not all of the weapons allow you to collect 'ammo' in the classic sense. Plasma rifles, plasma pistols and energy swords, for example, simply use up their energy and cannot be refilled. However, all human weapons (except the Spartan Laser) have ammo that you can pick up (simply by walking over it on the floor).

If you find Easy to be too easy (which, after a short while playing, you probably will), don't hesitate to switch to Normal. Eventually you will want to at least give Heroic a try, it's where the game really shines. I think Bungie intended for most players with some FPS experience to play at the Heroic level.

EDIT: Also, don't hesitate to ask us any more questions about the singleplayer, and definitely be sure to join us in some games on Xbox Live!

Well, there doesn't have to be any lead and trail time, but it's nice to have it when I got to edit, especially for a montage or something like that.

I can always trim footage if I have too much, but I can't add more if I need a few seconds. Some of the clips I've been sent literally end right as the announcer notes the overkill or whatever and it just looks so much cleaner to have the shit go down and then have a nice tail out with the player reloading or surveying the scene. Something like that.

So, if you don't want it, you don't need to send it along. It's just a suggestion.

:D
