as for the map thing, didn't Halo Wars' release day get pushed up to February? I thought I heard that at Microsoft's press conference at CES. Will that effect online distribution? I'm buying the Limited Edition, I'm just wondering about you guys who aren't gonna buy it.

Nah, MS released a statement later saying that the date announced in February was for Japan only. We US of A-ers are gonna have to wait till March 3rd to get it.

word, that'll give me more time to enjoy Street Fighter IV.

Which would fit in very nicely with fighting Elites. The combination of the two is going to have the Halo community going bananas. I know Bungie said ODST would in some ways be fan service, but I hadn't considered Elites coming back. It does make sense.
The article also talks about Bertone's work with the new project and how he developed a "cover first" system for the Brutes in this game, requiring the player to flank and use the environment strategically rather than simply chip away from a distance or charge shoulder first. This concept is not too foreign from Halo because it's one which was employed, to one degree or another, with Elites in the first two games. Perhaps this is another indicator for the Elite's resurgence during this title, since the "cover first" system fits neatly into their behavior aesthetic as well.

I'm thinking that the whole chain-of-command that the Brutes have in Halo 3, is a result of the Elites losing power at the end of Halo 2.
Nah, read Contact Harvest. It's a great read even if you just dig good sci-fi from time to time and Staten dramatically extrapolates the Brute culture in it. There's an incredibly complex and rich culture at work there and you can't read the book without walking away with a significantly higher amount of respect for their story -- even if they are still bastards.

Holy shit. There's a freaking

Thanks for letting me know where it is, too. Freakin' creamed my pants when I saw my Fable character wielding the
AR
. :lol

I'm thinking of picking up Killzone 2, but I'm gonna wait for a while, the first game was very "meh" and I still don't quite understand how so many people automatically expect the sequel to be good just because Sony are throwing money at it. I'll wait and see some reviews and impressions. The fact that I'm getting Halo Wars and new Halo 3 maps means I won't have any interest in any other games around that time too.

Nice to know that there will be some Halogaffers on the MP side, if it does prove to be a good game.

I hope we get to fight alongside Elites in ODST and get to use our MP permutations. I'm just saying, it'd be cool.

I've been training my hands to endure the DS3 by playing through MGS4 and even playing the abomination that is SOCOM.

Mind if I throw you a PSN FR? I'm assuming your PSN info in you GAF profile is accurate.
Yes sure, the PSN is case sensitive, and to think, I was going to buy Socom next month for the headset.

Haha, I'm in the exact opposite situation. I'm buying Killzone to keep me busy until the new Halo maps are available.

While I don't see it setting the world on fire like many around GAF do; the impressions have been great and the graphics/animations are really something else. If anything it'll be a worthwhile purchase.

Shiska has more sway than I thought.

Shit, I got 3 red lights. Fuck.

Fuck.

So, it's gonna cost me 50 quid to get it repaired? =(

If I plug my HD to a borrowed console, I can still Halo, right?

Fuck, I'm saddened. I can't afford this. =(

You could always sell your soul.

I played some solitary... (Yes, I finally have my xbox [Christmas gift], I forgot to mention that in this thread until now)

... Campaign scoring on Crow's Nest (Normal, all Gold skulls on except Iron and Famine)

Holy flipdip that was hard. Spent an hour doing it successfully, and the previous hour failing at it. I probably could have afforded to turn off a skull or two, as a finished somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 points. Got my cheesemint though.

Things I noticed:

- Spamming grenades is extremely useful, especially because Brutes drop a lot when they die
- Battle rifle is a huge advantage (Moar headshots = moar points iirc, especially as a finishing move on unarmored Brutes)
- Hold onto valuable equipment!
- Pick up Carbines and long range weapons often
- Gravity Hammer is especially useful (2 Hit kills on Brutes)

Captain Blood said:
Does the fable AR also increase map movement?!?!
The description for it is (and I'm not making this up):

Long ago, when Albion was still under rule of the Old Kingdom, a rift in space opened a portal between dimensions. Through the rift stepped a warrior of immense power, clad in green armour and carrying a striking crystal sword. Though he never revealed his real name, he was known to all as Hal. Few of his enemies were able to withstand the firepower of his sophisticated rifle.

I hope you guys are right about Elites being in ODST, but so far it doesn't seem like it from the trailer and concept art. :\
Perhaps it's something they don't want to reveal yet? To have it be some kind of surprise?

What are the reasons to not have elites?
-Development time? (having to design the elites and have them be A.I. distinguishable from the Brutes)

Reposted for the new page, seeing as I haven't really been able to get in on real Halo 3 discussions until now.

Thought i'd try and up my long-standing 40 after months of Ranked-retirement tonight, and remembered why playing Ranked Halo is diabolical.

For every game I was matched both with and against a team of equals, I was in another game where a teammate quit immediately, followed by another at some point later. Every game I won, my rank went nowhre, yet almost every game I lost my rank went straight down. That's not a rewarding ratio.

What kind of chance are you supposed to have when you're left 4 vs 2 on Standoff, with Pistol/AR starts?

I'm not sure if i'm really blaming anyone, just venting at an infuriating system filled with infuriating quitters. I know the standard response will be, "Don't team with randoms!", but, you know, sometimes that option is the only one available. All I know is after a good afternoon of fun and satisfying Social Slayer, going into ranked Team Slayer has really put me off for the night.

How the hell do you use Bumper Jumper? I've tried it for a few games, and it just seems awkward. I see a lot of people praising it though in various forums. What if you want to dual wield...how the hell are you supposed to jump AND dual wield at the same time?!

I don't think my fingers are made to bend like that :/

My preferred setting for skulls when doing solo campaign play:

  • Heroic difficulty
  • Mythic
  • Thunderstorm
  • Catch
  • Cowbell
  • Grunt Birthday Party

I like the increased number of enemies the difficulty setting produces, and their increased damage absorbing capability due to the first two skulls. The last ones are just to make it crazy.

I believe the answer will be something like, "real l33t players don't dual-wield".

moar BR

Seriously though, jumping and duel wielding isn't an issue. Better to aim and jump than to wield and jump.

That is the one main disadvantage. Beyond that its advanatges all the way!!

Yeah, it's really not made for dual wielding. I mean, you could do it, but do you really want to? No, you don't.

Why in the hell would you ever dual wield... Regardless, A button configuration isn't something you pick up in a day it takes several hours of gameplay for your brain and muscles to develop their memory and get in sync with one another. Unless you are some sort of freak who just has some insane skill with changing things hes done one way forever. It took me almost two weeks probably to stop hitting wrong buttons with Bumper Jumper.

The benefit of not having to remove your thumb from the aiming stick to press jump is a huge benefit in any heated BR fight.

Keep at it though.

Yeah, switching to BJ made me way more consistent with my BR as well as with melees. It's really helpful in all gametypes
other than the ones that Dax likes to play.

Because it's fun. Especially dual-wielding spikers.

Edit: @ Smokey, don't stick with it. If you want to try for a new button layout, try green thumb. It's what I use.

True.
I was still accidentally ejecting from the Banshee instead of shooting the fuel rod for a long while after switching.

Famine and Iron are insane, I couldn't get past the Brute hammer room with them on, so I turned them off and kept the rest of 'em.

I found running through a few campaign missions helped me get used to it. It was the beatdowns that screwed me up for the longest time.

Not sure how it came up but I was having this conversation with a few Halo Gaffers and I was curious which image the majority of the thread preferred?

For the guys I talked with I was in the minority. I vastly prefer the final version with the smooth armor. I really didn't like that first screen shot because I didn't think it made sense for metal armor to have a sandpaper look. Thoughts?

The green fingers on the first image are hot. Therefore it wins.

Seriously though, the hands on the first image are fugly. WTH?

The smoothness of the second picture is definitely better, and makes more sense I suppose if he's wearing super indestructible space armour.

Probably just the way the lighting is hitting The Chief in that screenshot.

OK, I need help here.

Right, using someone else's 360, swapped my HD over and want to play online Halo but can't. It says I need DLC, which I already have.

Right, I downloaded (and paid fully for) the DLC on my original account. I couldn't renew it, so I had created a new account. It allowed me access to my DLC since I was using the same machine. Now it won't.

What the hell can I do?

I've tried loading up my old profile. It will let me play a custom game on the maps if I load up my old profile, select the map, play it and sign out and in to my current one. When I do that, it will let me play the custom game, but won't load the picture in the menu, the hell? It won't let me access anything online that requires the DLC.

I refuse to buy the Legendary Map Pack again. Fuck it, I paid full price for it the minute it came out. Same with the Heroic. I don't even have the points spare. Heck, I'm getting the LE version of Halo Wars just to get the Mythic Pack (otherwise standard). I hate paying for something twice.

=(

Dammit, with my 360 RRODing and this. =(

EDIT: Found a compromise. =)
Annoying but better than nothing I suppose.
