Whoa, there's going to be a midship remake?

Sorry, been out of the loop for some time.
Yeah. It's a bit bigger, they changed the middle up a touch and now it's called Assembly. It's in the Mythic Map Pack that comes with the Halo Wars LE. Played like a dream at PAX.

Ah so more in line with a Guardian than a Blackout. I can dig.

I too want to believe in the blue grid. If sanbox is as crazy as they say, hopfully we can have a specific playlist of just sandbox variants.

Fixed :)

"Sandbox combines large-scale vehicular combat with a limitless amount of Forge customization. Boasting a tiered, open-world layout, “Halo 3” players will be able to build their own unique game experiences using the Forge map editor. Sandbox is a map unlike any Bungie has ever created."

I look at Sandbox and all I want to do is make Blood Gulch.

And Luke has even implied that it's not.

But it does not matter. Let us all panic together.
To me it looks like the type of geometry one might expect from a Halo 2 map, so being a fan of Halo 2's multiplayer maps, this excites me -- so I won't panic either way.

Also, has a map ever been featured/named in the Bungie image gallery and turned out being a non-default variant? Maybe there has, I just don't recall that ever being the case. I suppose if it was a variant of Sandbox, they might have named it differently in the gallery, right? As they've done in the past with Snowbound, Epitaph and Sandtrap? I could be wrong though.

Falagard said:
The press release hypes the map as unique, which it is, even if all it is is what's visible in the screenshot. The screenshot shows a map which consists of just terrain, with a playable area in the center that can be customized with Forge objects.

It also says it's an open world layout. A tiered open-world layout. What does tiered mean? It often indicates levels or layers. That can be interpreted in many ways, but I'm guessing it's just marketing speak for "many different things can be done with it".

I'm still pretty sure we won't be seeing a blue grid. I'm pretty sure we won't be seeing the ability to change the landscape or skybox, or even pick from a set of pre-defined landscapes.

I think the lighting is the way it is because of technical issues with dynamic Forge objects not casting shadows. They needed to make the scene dark, and light apparently come from directly above. I'm guessing there's actually something in the scene to explain the light coming from above as well, such as a large orange moon or something.
Don't be such a Negative Nancy! ;-)

I have no idea what was originally intended in the press release, but there have been other press releases about other maps, so I would speculate that when they say "unique" or "tiered" or "open-world" they use those words to differentiate it from the common fare of multiplayer maps they've mentioned historically across past press releases. I don't know all that we will be able to do and not do in Sandbox, but the press release is pretty clear: blue grid or not, Sandbox will not be the average multiplayer map.

I can also appreciate the level of controlled pessimism here, but we're not children, right? Just because I think they actually mean "unique" and "tiered" and "open-world" when they use those words, doesn't mean that my universe will fall apart if we get this exact map without any innovation beyond what we can plainly see. I can't speak for all of GAF, but I'm pretty sure I won't cry.

You might find one of those shaded sanctuaries in Halo 3's Mythic Map Pack, set for initial release this Spring bundled with the Halo Wars Limited Collector's Edition, and then a short time later by way of Xbox Live Marketplace as standalone downloadable content.

Why would they reveal Sandbox with a non-default layout? That doesn't make a lot of sense.

Neither does helping release them in another game, but MS doesn't seem to mind packing them in with Halo Wars.
The map doesn't seem to have visible weapons placed yet, has an overshield you can't reach, and there was the quote by luke that "the sanbox on shiska's screen looks very different then this one" - all adding up to some serious doubt.

Ah yes, those are good points. Still, although now you've pointed that out I think you're probably right about it not being the default layout, why would they show that layout?

Bungie/MS do make odd descisions sometimes.

Dirtbag said:
You think Luke would have trouble drawing a crecsent moon vs. a sun set? One's a circle, the other a toe-nail...

I was pointing out that this could be opposite vantage point of the exact same skybox, or a different all together... and explaining your high-in-the-sky light source in that tower spotlight.
Dirtybag has a point. I forgot that the sky in Luke's sketch was what looked like a crescent moon.

kylej said:
"Limitless" almost seems like clever wording to me. As in your creations are limitless as long as you use the 12 blocks seen in the picture. But if there are "no limits" is it theoretically possible to have the entire playing area stacked to the ceiling with blocks?

I don't mean to be so pessimistic but Bungie is the same company that turned Lockout into a rusty oil platform set at midnight.

How about a screenshot in the coming weeks of Sandbox piled high with as many blocks as it can fit?
:lol

There are weapons, but they are affected by LOD. People were pointing out some of them earlier in the thread. Normally, you wouldn't be able to see them from that far out, but due to the ridiculous resolution sent off for press, you can zoom way in and still make some of them out. And you can jump to that Overshield, no problem.

Sounds like that pic does show the default layout then. Nice.

I think he means by those who think you're getting a blue grid, expecting to modify the sky box and ground terrain -- don't. You should acceptably lower your expectations.

If we get further info on it from Luke, Urk, or another employee, that's wonderful. But until then, I wouldn't speculate too hard. Right now, I'm expecting an outdoor Foundry-esque map.

The fuck? What does MS/Halo Wars have to do with the press release picture of Sandbox? I'm aware you're not happy with their decision on Halo Wars LE getting the maps sooner than hitting the Marketplace, but chill out.

So Bungie is going to start releasing loads of information on Sandbox from now until March? Or will it include other things?

Either way, Urk, Luke, if possible, please release some news on Feb 10th (:D). It would be a wonderful birthday present.

Can't speak for Luke, but I'll probably be too busy playing the Killzone 2 demo. But have a happy birthday and stuff!

:)

Yeah I think so now.
From having never played it, I won't judge the standard layout (if that is infact the default layout), but it does look somewhat un-impressive. I do appreciate the "good textures" approach though. I think its also hard to put the map in the proper scale given the viewpoint, but it seems like a warthog would completely dominate that wide open space.

I didn't see that implied, it just seemed like Urk was trying to clear up a misconception about the screenshots.

I certainly hope that's not the default layout, at least. I mean, dear god, it's flat ground with a few blocks. It's a firing range that'll be owned by vehicles. It's dreadful-looking.

I'm pretty sure it is the default variant. Did they reveal foundry with a different variant?

I hope we don't have to wait long for it to come to the marketplace.

No videos were taken immemorial. No screenshots snapped to mark their passing. The only soliloquy to be offered is one of mere words.
Seriously Bungie? You couldnt've took a short clip for a future ViDoc? =\

Grimm Fandango said:
March 3rd right? Unless I'm missing something.
You did. March 3rd is if you buy the $80 CE of Halo Wars. Everyone else has to wait for it to come on the marketplace "later this spring".

i thought the mythic map pack was 5 maps... not 3?
It was supposed to be 6, but Microsoft split it into 2 map packs. One with Halo Wars, the other with Halo 3: ODST.

Mythic Map Pack 1 (Halo Wars CE)
---------------------------------------
Assembly
Orbital
Sandbox

Mythic Map Pack 2 (Halo 3: ODST)
---------------------------------------
Citadel
Heretic
Longshore

I like this guy's thinking.

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=29973052

"Though you may feel as though you've been condemned to stand chin-deep in cool, refreshing waters your lips can never touch, sweetly-scented orbs of fruit dangling overhead ever out of reach, the cruel torment will end soon enough. The mythical tantalizing will fade away like sand after a windstorm, becoming nothing more than a distant memory."

quote from urk.from the bungie weekly update.

this makes me think. maby. ok "chin deep in cool, refreshing water." a filter for that? change it into an ocean?

"sweetly scented orbs dangling over head." the blue and red thing? i think there filters. he is refering to them i think.

"after sand and windstorm, become nothing more than a distant memory" i think he is telling us that we might be able to see the sand go away. the orbs overhead, can change the type of environment, into an ocean. chin deep.

far fetched, but i like it.

EPIC

Too bad it's not true.

Default Foundry was/is terrible, too. Just hope it isn't integrated into MM without supporting other creations unlike Foundry for the most part.

I'm never going to buy Halo Wars. Does that mean I'll never be able to get those maps?

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth.

Thinking of holding a custom games night every weekend for gaffers, maybe use the multiplayer thread in the online section for it. Nothing too organised, just a general time frame and using whatever custom maps suggested on the night by whomever present.

It came to my attention that there are quite a few gaffers even outside the HaloGAF regulars so maybe it would be a good chance to bring in some more people, play more games and have some nice alternatives to matchmaking.

Thoughts anyone?

I would love that. I'm trying to get back into Halo after a long hiatus.
