Has anybody seen this? It comes from the normally reputable CBC up here in Canada. The Fifth Estate is sort of the Canadian equivalent of 60 Minutes. It's a piece on the death of Brandon Crisp, a kid who ran away from home after his parents took away his 360 and COD4. Sadly, he died in an accident in the forest. Most here are probably at least partly familiar with this story.

The video in question is not really Halo related, but MLG is brought up as a driving force for addiction to video games. Also, not sure how Marty O'Donnell would feel having his music (or, his rendition of Chopin more specifically) used the way it is in this video. At least I think it was Marty who composed the piece for the Believe diorama.

Moral of the story, stay out of playlists with BR starts cause you'll grow to be hyper competitive and give up on everything in life in exchange for your shot at MLG fame.

Babylon 5 is way better than BSG; seasons 3 and 4 of B5 are of a much higher quality than any season in BSG, and DS9 is better, too. Have you seen either?

14 episodes can't compete with two tv shows that have over 100 each.

You two need a group hug?

Shouldn't you Bungie guys post some actual footage of ODST already? The game is a couple of months away.
Is it? I thought it was coming in the autumn. I was expecting to see it at PAX.

I live in BC, Canada, and saw this playing the other day. It brought up some good points, but it really failed to put together something compelling, for a few reasons:

- Some really boneheaded interview questions
- Playing up the whole "player faces" and "slow mo game death" angle
- Leaning heavily on anecdotal stories like that of the Crisps'
- Putting heat on game developers and halfway implying complicity in unrelated death

Overall, I get the feeling they handed over their investigation to people who weren't very familiar with the industry, its rating systems or even much of the research on the subject.

Special highlight was when the interviewer claimed that the ESRB stickers don't provide a warning to parents, seemingly missing out on the fact that it has the age range in big, bold letters, and an explanation of content in the game that got it that specific rating.

I'm nearly finished with one of my bases in my Beaver Creek inspired map in the normal ground in Sandbox. I have to merge some wedges in the back near teleporter to cease the cracks that's been made. Otherwise, I'm fairly happy with it.

I'll see what you guys think, or should I change/add.

Do you think you'll have enough budget to do the whole thing?

EDIT: Ah, "inspired." Okay, cool.

Dax isn't real. I'm now convinced he's a parody. A plant, perhaps Frankie himself.

I'm on to you, Dax.
IF THAT'S YOUR REAL NAME

Not possible. See, I would kill myself if I liked DS9 and yet I am still alive.

Everyone has to load the map, just like in MP.

Not what hes talking about. Loading the map is done before the clip starts. It hangs in black for like 10 minutes when watching clips. Doesn't happen when watching films though.

Grimm Fandango said:
What's the reason again that it takes forever to load a video when watching a clip with others?

This functionality was almost cut from H3 and in fact, there's a good argument for why it should've been cut altogether: It's a suboptimal user experience.

In order to view Film Clips in a party, the game state of the film in question must be pushed to everyone you're viewing said item with. The game state information is several megs and on top of that the party state must be synchronized to view the clip. This process takes close to 15 seconds in system link and significantly longer online depending on party member's bandwidth.

Here's a few shots of my BC-inspiration map (blue base I've completed), but I left the leftovers, from Mr Voc's placement canvas, on the outside. No weapon spawns or anything so far. I put a place for the flag for setup. The top open section is more narrow than the usual, but still in the middle of the base.

Looks good.

How much of the original's stone arch and sniper/rocket ramps do you plan on recreating? I ask because I figure it'd be hard without trying to wall the play area off.

I think it will be interesting to see how these turn out. It is kinda cool that two different gaf forgers are tackling the same remake. I intrigued by what the differences/similarities will be.

Not sure yet. I'm not overly worried about players trying to run into the sand for outside space or whatever. This, like the default Sandbox variant, should be a Team Slayer BRs or Multi-Flag BRs type map anyway.

Are you building yours in the Crypt?

Yes he is.

Here's the progress on Ascension after about 5 hours work (aka too much for one day need study!)

current construction is a pain in the arse trying to get the topography similar and having to build an elevated ground:

Here's the dish. The fins and columns are for size comparison, they're roughly the size of the big moving thingies:

Here's a view from below the sniper perch looking down the ramp (I forget the callouts):

I'm done for the day, I've got too much other stuff to do.

Not to deflate your current state of partial victory, but I would've suggested starting at the bottom of the map, and building up, rather than starting with the dish. Nice work so far, though.

Ascension just has no great place to start

Holy shit do these sandbox maps look amazing. Here's what I've been working on for the past couple days:

GangPlank Galley

I've always wanted a pirate-themed level, and I got tired of waiting (although if I had seen The Flying Dutchman prior to starting this I probably wouldn't have bothered. It looks awesome).

The map is symmetrical, with some weapon differences on the ships (Covenant=blue, UNSC=red). It consists of two levels, above and below deck.

Below Deck
68979311-Full.jpg

The man cannon on the top deck of each ship is meant for travel between ships (swashbuckling and all that). It is also possible to travel between the ends of ships on the debris resulting from the battle. The 3 cannons below are just that--cannons. Fusion coils spawn every ten seconds over each one and are thrown onto the opposite ship, exploding on impact. The middle cannon actually destroys the grav-lifts up to the main mast once occasionally, destroying access to the rockets/laser and the turret for a while.

68979361-Full.jpg

The only real problem I have with it now is the top deck surface. I made it out of walls, and they end up moving and buckling over the course of a match. But it kinda makes sense that the ships should get fucked up by the cannons.

Right now, the map is set up for slayer only. I have some ideas for a VIP variant (Ship captain being the VIP) and a King of the Hill variant (capture some booty). I would really appreciate some feedback; my girlfriend is getting tired of hearing about this. :D

Rocket spawn?

That's where I had started, lol. though by Insaniac's progress, I might not need to bother. It looks really good, dude. My hat's off to you.

damnit, I just got my notification from MS that my box just got in for repairs...damn, it's not getting back by Friday. :(

edit: Nvmnd, just saw those other man cannons.

re' Ascension

seems to me that trying to recreate the dish in forge would be difficult as fuck and more then likely wouldnt work out so hot anyway. why not take some liberty with that aspect and change it up?

maybe just have a roughly squared depression instead.

recreating the dish isn't really as difficult as it may seem, it could be a bit time consuming for new forgers however.

Ascension looks to be shaping up well :)

Yeah, mine's in the crypt. The crypt isn't big enough to accurately recreate BC (It takes 18 seconds to get across BC in H2 and only 15 seconds to get across the crypt in H3 which has a slower running speed).

It's good to see our maps aren't too identical so hopefully each offers something unique and equally fun.

I've decided that since the list is getting bigger and things may start getting lost in there I will highlight the newest maps. Starting this week I will list the new or updated maps of the last 7 days.

My map is nearly complete, it is more of a one sided flag map.

I based it off of an old Bungie concept that some of you might remember.....

It is different than that picture with my own style to it and I'll take pictures and post them tomorrow.

Would've been so much better than the current High Ground.
