I know that I'm in the minority with my opinion, so I won't be offended if I get totally burned for this post. But I've been so frustrated playing Halo3 by myself for the last couple of days, that I feel I deserve a rant. I went out and repurchased a 360 and xboxlive for this?:lol

So I recovered my old account, which was a mistake. I'm so rusty at the game that I can't do any ranked matches or I piss off all my teammates. That's another story though. My old xbox live friend's list had roughly 15 people on it who routinely played Halo3, and none of them are ever on anymore. That would suggest that Halo3 has gone to the wayside. I would defend Halo3, but it's kind of hard to when almost every level is overrun by vehicles. Is this Halo or Twisted Metal? It always seemed strange to me when you had a system in Halo:CE that worked so well, but each new Halo game has deviated further and further away from that formula. ie more and more vehicles, and less maps without vehicles. I understand that people like the vehicles, but it's out of control. The vehicles are like cockroaches, running rampant atm. People don't even try to go out and attack people with guns anymore, which I would argue is the true essence of Halo.

It had been so long since I last played Halo3 that I had forgotten how painful it can be. The game severely punishes you for trying to play group gametypes without a group (which makes up most of the matchmaking options). It's almost always a group of low-level randoms against a high-ranked group of people already in a party together. Add to that a ranking system invented by my younger sister and I think I may stick to rumble pit for the rest of my life, despite the fact that it's my least favorite gametype. How Bungie could leave out individual performance as part of ranking up is laughable imo. Not that it would matter for me right now, I'm playing like garbage. In all honesty, Multi-team is about the only enjoyable experience there is when playing solo. Everything else just ticks me off.

Aside from my complaints about the ranking system and pains of playing solo, here are some other things I want to rant about, simply because they were issues that I encountered repeatedly in the last two days.

-Why does the gauss hog even exist? It's the single most overpowered vehicle in the game, and it ruins every level that it's in. Because getting mowed down by the turret isn't bad enough. Standoff anyone?
-And why is there 5v5 on avalanche? The map is too big for that, even with the parking lot of vehicles at each base. And yet the map comes up 50% of the time...
-Considering how easy it is for someone in a vehicle to kill someone who is not, a sticky or spike grenade should be enough to take out a vehicle (at least ghosts, jeeps, and choppers). I complained about this before I quit the last time and it's sad to see that well aimed sticks to vehicles are still a waste of time. Nothing beats coming off with the stick of your life, only to get mowed down and to watch the vehicle driving away.
-The pistol is the shittiest weapon in the game. Just remove it from every map. It's an insult and a disgrace to what it used to be. Perhaps if players could throw the pistol at eachother, it might be more useful?
-If Bungie wanted to make vehicles reign supreme in Halo, why'd they get rid of the locking capability of the rocket launcher? Inquiring mind wants to know.
-Lastly, team hammers and rocket race are retarded. Get rid of the rockets and people might actually try to race. Instead, the majority of the people get into a pointless battle of shooting rockets at eachother (but no one ever dies?) while one team alone finishes the race. And there is no help for team hammers. It has no hope of ever being fun.

I definitely agree with quite a lot of that. It really is sad that vehicles have taken over so much. I truly believe, and I've said this many times before, that Halo multiplayer is at its best in 4v4 gametypes (Btw, am I the only one who hates that Social Slayer was changed from 4v4 to 5v5?). I never understood the appeal of vehicles, and I've always hated most multiplayer games that include them; ie Unreal Tournament. Although, here on GAF, I'm pretty sure you are in the minority if you hate vehicles.
 
I'm a 4v4 purist too, but I don't mind there being vehicles, especially in the bigger games. There's plenty of counters, and often I find people who complain about vehicle spam are also the ones walking right past power drainers/plasma pistols/missile pods.

Sticking vehicles just seems really inconsistent. Sometimes you bag a triple kill on a warthog, other times it keeps on trucking as if nothing happened, which on a scale of aggravation scale ranks right up there with what it feels like to die at the hand of someone charging straight at you holding down the trigger on their AR.

That said, there should never be banshees on Valhalla and you cannot convince me otherwise. I also agree that 5v5 Avalanche is sort of pointless. And hammers and rocket race are on my do not want list too.

I'm all for vehicles but only when they are in the correct playlist. Actually that was #7 on my list: 7. Vehicles removed from TS. In games of 4v4 I think its better to have no vehicles, fact is the maps you play on shouldn't be large enough to warrant a vehicle in a 4v4 playlist. I've said it time and time again also Avalanche is WAY to big for 10 players or below. The playlists need a major overhaul regarding #of players and map selection.

On Orbital of all places!

I started out slow, still having only zero kills by time my team had nine (I think) in total. Fast forward to nearly the end of the game it's 46 to 32. I need to get three of the last four kills to get a perfection. Highly unlikely, but still doable. Before I know it, it's 47 to 32, and I need to get ALL remaining kills to get a perfection. I see a teammate get killed, and rush over to that spot (some other teammates going in the same direction). I get a double kill, then a triple, the game is over, and BOOM: Perfection.

I'm so proud of myself.

Yeah, vehicles can be really frustrating. I don't think they're necessarily bad, but too much of one thing can get old really fast. I can't count how many times I would start heading somewhere on a map only to have one of my teammates following me with a jeep honking the horn for me to hop in. LOL go away!!:D I also don't like how hard it is to jump over a charging ghost. If the timing isn't perfect, you die. If you stick it with a grenade, it's a toss up whether or not the ghost will explode or the person in it will simply laugh at your futile efforts.

Previously in Halo:CE, you only had to worry about getting sniped, ghosts, and a tank (if you even kept tanks and ghosts in the game. Most people I played with did not.) Then Halo2 came out, and you had to deal with the occasional warthog with a turret, tanks, banshees and ghosts. Although ghosts and banshees used to be easier to deal with if you were smart. Large vehicles like the tanks could be avoided. And now in Halo3, you've got choppers, two types of tanks, ghosts, hornets, sniper rifles, and a crazy lazer beam. Going on foot is almost not even an option sometimes.

I don't want to be a troll, but I was going through some severe stress yesterday and the day before and wanted to get what I said before off my chest. I love Halo. I love the series. And no matter how many times I get upset or disappointed about a game, I will continue to look forward to the next installment.

What I really miss is big team battle. Social big team doesn't count because most people don't take it seriously, and the rest quit out in the middle of a game. Others just use it to ride around in vehicles to see how many kills they can rack up rather than working towards the objectives. And now with so many different vehicles, you just aren't safe roaming the map rogue style. I miss Colossus for being one of the few big team battle viable maps where vehicles weren't possible. I miss Headlong, my all-time favorite big team battle map, where you had vehicles, but much of the map was better for wandering around on foot. The multiple levels on headlong was fantastic. Even waterworks had enough tunnels and side paths, which made it more viable to be on foot rather than in a vehicle.

I think big team battle has lost a lot of its flavor in halo3, simply because the larger maps are not as interconnected by vehicle safe passages, and multitiered levels. Valhalla, in my own opinion, is a horrible map. It may be my least favorite in halo3.

And whatever happened to clans? They may have been stupid, but I actually liked them. They were a way to intentionally play other competitive groups, and have a name while doing it.
 
So my son and I are playing Multi-Flag CTF on Isolation, and I remember that in yesterday's Halo 3 Mythbusters, they showed that you can pass the flag through the windows. I say to Ben, "hey, just throw it to me through the window!" He says "how do I do that?" (He's a pretty sharp kid, but I guess he never threw a flag before.) I say "just pull the trigger."

He's not sure WHICH trigger... so he pulls both.

I always have trouble with MLG streams, there never seems to be an easy way to get them to work.

Why can't they have both high and low quality streams?

Quick question: Did there used to be Frag grenade spawns in Warlock? If so where were they? My memory is so hazy...

frag spawns I believe were between each base and platform, like in the little runway if i remember correctly. I think there were 2 there.

So where were the plasma grenades.... I'm confused. I know there were a couple of plasmas bottom middle. Anywhere else? On the Platforms near the BR's?

Ok so there are a total of 12 plasma grenades and 8 frag grenades on Warlock.

Plasma Grenade Locations:
2 between each platform and base in the runway.
4 bottom mid (2 on the left and right side)

Frag Grenade Locations:

1 Frag grenade on each side of the portals. 1 to the left and 1 to the right of the portal. In those little nooks you can hide in.

Edit: I didn't know Isolation got "Floodier" over time, too. Never noticed that.

OK, I've now officially done all I can do (no budget and reached item limit).

So I present Mage v2.1 I think I have all the spawn issues fixed although Multi Flag will need to be tested as the spawn zones may not actually work. Beyond that I think its a pretty good map :D

Sweet, can't wait to play the polished map. Will you be joining us in customs tonight, or will you be sleeping by then? I think we should have a good crowd tonight, if Ghaleon and Dax and the Deputy guy show up.

You know, later. As in not now.

As for tighten up, I mean, make some stuff less loose. That's all.

More specifically: I'm on around 8:00pm eastern each night.

A couple Forge "tightening" suggestions, and one design suggestion.

On one of the bases, the angled blocks are not right up against each other. I only only noticed it because they were solid on the other side. It's wide enough to fire a rocket through.

This might have been an aesthetic decision, but I thought these corners stood out a little too much.

I suggest replacing the corner one with the, um, corner block.

The flip side is the top now overhangs a bit as opposed to being stacked on top of the block, so that might be an aesthetic call. But I think the corner block fits in a bit better.

On the ramps to the rocket perch, the floor blocks one portion of the ramp on the left. Since players will want to go left as they come up the ramp, it's easy to get snagged on it.

It's easy to jump over, but I got snagged on it a few times.

The last suggestion is around the platform the rocket is located on. I think it's too large of an open space. I get that you want the upper levels to be open, where the power items are while the ground floor features cover but this felt just too large.

Even one object in the center will break up the space and make shoot outs much more interesting up there.

You've got a similar sized open space down below, but it doesn't feel nearly as open because there's a central structure to break up the sight line from all sides, while still retaining the open layout.

It works pretty well down there. Suggest something similar on the top, like this:

(Random object - a small block might work good as well.)

Same thing applies to the bridge - too long of an open space. A small handful of objects on the top surface, and maybe in the lower level corners, would go a long way.

Otherwise, it's a pretty neat layout.
