The Official New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread

Anyone have a comparison pic of stars with sparkle and without? I saw the SG block a few times but never pressed it, and my stars are certainly very shiny.
no pic, but the sparkle is kind of separate from the stars. it's like particle effects, a bunch of tiny little stars that emerge from or surround the big star.

Okay, but I remember seeing stars with a dull greyed in border somewhere. Yet mine seem to be the standard shiny sort.

Perhaps there's three types of star-sheens?

1. Use superguide - dull stars
2. See superguide - shiny stars
3. Never see superguide - sparkling stars

?

This makes me wish Nintendo would've included one in the game because I'll probably never get to use this or play the created levels.
Yeah, well, woulda been best game ever, period, had they released an official editor to go with it. I'm sure a few of us could agree to that :P

More emerging (cover) art from this particular editing team:

well, using the guide is confirmed to take one star away completely. i dunno about dull stars.

Less focus on icons and covers and more focus on actually making the level editor work properly and making levels.

I dream of a day where a hacked NSMB Wii allows me to load remade levels from the Mario's and play them with my friends.

Kard8p3 said:
Are they making galaxy style levels in that hack?
Yes, this is their proposed world layout:

Prologue: Escape from Bowser's Badlands
1. Yoshi's Island
2. Sewer System
3. Toy Town
4. Freezeflame Fjord
5. Mega-Mini Mountain
6. Starry Skies (Sky + Galaxy)
7. Ghostly Graveyard
8. Planet Koopa
9. Bonus: Retro Road

There's a SMW Yoshi's Island 1 hack on YouTube somewhere.

In this game I discover my girlfriend is a big, selfish, team-killing, jerk >:(

Which is fucking rude given that I carried her sorry ass through Gears of War 2, Resident Evil 5 and Halo 3 :(

I don't think that NSMBW is better than Mario World.

But it's too soon to ask that anyway; ask me again in 15 years if I am still playing either game, and the one that's been played the most will be considered the best one.

that i would even consider a new 2d mario to be in the realm of SMW is a feat in and of itself for the developer. i really didn't think that was possible for me to remove that element of video game cultural impact from my judgment, but the game is good enough that it's really undeniable for me personally that it stands toe-to-toe with those classics.

it's less surprising that i can recognize those qualities in something like SMG, which is a 3d game and a different beast altogether; but for NSMBW to take on SMW on its own terms and not come out obviously short is unreal.

such a good time to be a fan of this hobby.

i would just repeat levels until i got them all most of the time. it really helps that the game is so much fun that you don't mind playing the same level over and over again.

yep, i replay the same level over and over until i get the coins. not only as you say is it fun to replay them because they're so damn excellent, but it also helps me pace myself so i don't finish the game in a single freakin' day :lol

I was playing NSMB tonight while waiting in line at Best Buy. Man, that game's problems sure get magnified after you've played NSMBW.

hey, i don't have a copy on hand and i can't remember clearly--is the reverse-momentum backflip (or whatever you want to call it) in NSMB DS?

You know, I didn't check it out. I was too busy breezing through the levels. I was surprised how many elements from that game made it into NSMBW, though.

I've finished world 8 with star coins up to world 4 - and I don't know how to feel about this. The game is absolutely sublime. It's definitely in the same league as SMB3 (and judging by this thread, I still have some of the best levels yet to find). Moreover, the superawesomeness took me almost completely by surprise! On one hand, I find it amazing that the game can even compare to the old masterpieces. On the other hand, it's depressing that before playing it myself, I was quite certain the game could in no way live up to the original SMB3 and SMW. I'm getting too old and cynical. But at least I can feel like 10 again with this. :D

Say, what if this game had some sort of a "Quick Play" mode or something?

Like, something where you only play a through a stage once and it throws you into the next one like in the first 2 games. No toad houses, no saving, only one exit counts, and there's a score leaderboard at the end (so the big coins are still important). Of course co-op still goes and everything. 3 continues restart you at <world>-1 and everything.
I would have definitely used that a lot of times. With only 3 save slots there isn't much you can do in the way of quick replaying without losing some big progress.

If you take out all the time spent fishing for coins, going through toad houses, finding secret exits, playing through two routes on the map (it always splits), how much time would playing the Quick Play mode take? Quick enough for one game session?

How long can one session be? The first time I really played this game was in 3-4 player co-op and we got to the credits in one sitting. It took like 8 or 9 hours, though. :lol

There you fucking go.
It is surreal for me too as this game totally questions my 2D Mario games podium for first place wich was Super Mario Bros 3.

.

This game is pretty damn tight. I really wouldn't mind if they released more 2D Mario games like this. This one feels like a combination of Mario 1, 2, 3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and the DS Mario all rolled into one. And that's a good thing.

That actually sounds pretty cool. Can't wait to watch youtube playthroughs of the game.

Don't forget the original Mario Bros. The way the characters bounce off each other in multiplayer and the way the characters squish down when you jump on them feels exactly like Mario Bros. did.

I finished the game (although only have 4 stars, nooo), was all kinds of awesome.

I had about 95 lives when I started 9-7, and by the time I had all the star coins I had about 60, and even then I cheated and got 2nd and 3rd on different tries. Jesus Christ.

Yes there is.

How would you actually play that? Would it be like a homebrew thing?

Yes.

I really wish someone adds that in Newer SMBWii or with the editor.

Love it. I do. I really do.

One thing though...in the Instruction Manual, why are the 'Koopa Kids' referred to as "Bowser's Minions" ?

I really like how many Super Mario World-esque things there are in the game. Mario's jump sound effect, Yoshi, the Castle music, the little tune that plays when your Star Power is about to end, the spin-jump, etc.

I've heard many people say the castle music is from super mario world but I just don't hear it.

We finally have the 5 Stars after looking over every World for what we missed.
2-4, secret exit. Pipe didn't really strike me as 'important'. Oops!

I want to let everything settle, and go for a single player run through in a couple months. Really fantastic title though. This will definitely be a party title for years to come.

I heard on the internetz that they got retconned out of the family.

So I didn't like NSMB much (aside from some of the multiplayer games). I found the game too easy and uninspired.

Will I like NSMBW?

I am shocked to say the least. I got the game and had low expectations after NSMB on the DS but this game is probably one of the best 2D Mario games I ever played!

I tried multiplayer for the first time with the wife and some friends and it was like playing a totally new game compared to single player mode. I still don't understand how they managed to pull it off.

I hate DS NSMB but the Wii version was my idea. This game will most likely become a classic.

I'm so busy that I hardly have time to play these days. But I'm looking forward to Uncharted 2 and NSMB Wii this Christmas.

Two fast-paced, pick-up-and-play games full of polish and personality. :)

I'm soooooo happy to see the Koopalings back. Is it true you fight each Koopaling twice?

Yes. Once in the halfway tower, then again at the end of the world.
