The Official New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread

Up through World 3-1 now. Very entertaining thus far. I had good expectations for the title, and have not been let down. It's similarly impressed my fiancee, who didn't exactly enjoy the idea of multiplayer Mario at first. We played three players all the way through thus far, with her less than stellar sister as the third Toad. Even though we were all jumping off each others heads, stealing power ups, and dying quite a bit, it was very fun.

With this, Brawl, Mario Kart, and Dokapon Kingdom, Wii is destined to become my favorite local multiplayer system ever. But speaking on that topic, it's a crying shame that there's no online play with Wii Speak for this title.

If they put online in now, what feature would they use as a bullet point for New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2?

"New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2 - Now with an all new artstyle that isn't lazy!"

Um, its no mistake, Im sure. NSMB DS sold a SHIT LOAD! Meaning, its a name that a lot of the people that bought the DS version can recognize...its brilliant marketing.

We shall see when the NPD's come out.

I think 19 counts as a teenager.

After watching the Giantbomb quicklook, the multiplayer looks mad fun :D.

Although I'm no teenager, multiplayer is a blast. Personally, I think I would breeze through single player pretty easily. Maybe the difficulty would be something more than NSMB, or Super Princess Peach, but it's generally pretty simple. The insane amounts of power ups you receive, the lives, the interesting, but not 'too' threatening level designs of the first few worlds.

I will definitely be playing with others for the entire game, I couldn't imagine doing it any other way.

Oh fuck... Thanks to this game, I have discovered that I am not the only one in this thread with a dying GPU.

:(

I wonder if I should just keep going and beat it (about half-way done ATM), or get it fixed now, and continue later. For those that have beaten it, what would you do?

Ahh to be a teenager again...

Anyhow, the multiplayer is a blast, but not for everyone.

Some may just see other people on the screen as obstacles that ruin the flow of the game.

Others like myself, see them as ways to get ahead. Need an extra boost for your jump... just spike your friends into the lava pit before... need to reach that out of the way star coin, toss your friend and hop they can make the return jump.... need to take out an enemy... build a four man tower

Oh, BigNastyCurve, what a surprise you're in for.

Is there really a generation that's under the impression the Mario franchise name is not an insanely huge IP?

Just finish it now. The GPU dies slowly. My Wii had a dying GPU for 6 months and it was the disk drive that went, not the GPU.

Haha, but yeah.. if everyone is cooperative, it's a blast. Even if there's a little competition (which there is), it's great for a laugh.

Also something to note, I guess.

While I still would have preferred a Super Mario World-esque map, I do like the map in this game. How it is ever growing and there are actual dangers on the map itself.

Like in world 6 when you have to cross the screen without getting hit by the bullet bills or in World 5 with the vines that block different paths.

Yeah...

Regardless, I just realized I don't have much choice. I don't have 80 USD right now for my 8th or so Wii repair.

I am so pissed and sad right now. Game is so awesome though, I hope this won't tarnish it.

Seriously, why does it have to be my most used, and most loved console? If a console has to fail, can't the Wii get a break? ;_; No pun intended of course...

Seriously Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story for DS sold a ton its first month, and that was an RPG and with relatively minimal advertising.

This is going to sell like a million five hundred thousand copies in its first month. Maybe more; I don't do sales age. Fuck sales.

No way! :O That's the worst luck ever, sorry. The only thing wrong with my Wii is that the blue light never turns on anymore :lol Oh well.

*shrug* I could be.

edit: It's a great game, and it will sell shitloads, I'm just not sure we'll see NSMB DS levels. Or maybe even MW2 levels of sales. I guess that's how I define "underperforming" for a title like this.

Why the hell would you pay 80 USD. It says on the included papers you get back that upon repair, you get a new, 1 year warranty on the system. I have sent my original Red DS in so many times to get fixed that its still under warranty (In fact, I got to send it back in again due to the L button being unresponsive, but I got a DSi now so I am not in to much of a rush)

the commercials they're airing for this game in Australia are perfect

We never know for sure until it has run the course.

There are some big cards on the table for this game, if it fails to create momentum like Wii Music and Animal Crossing were supposed to there will be severe consequences.

Expect to see Nintendo go Activision mode, not in a good way.

I played some of the game today.

When my brother brought it home, I made it through three levels by myself in single player. But then we went over our friend's place and played up until the halfway point in world 3, and it was a blast. Such a hilarious multiplayer experience, as you'd expect. We had a lot of great laughs.

Good times. This game is a keeper.

That said, I will note that if I had to choose a minor complaint about the game, it would be the fact that there are only three characters to play this. Fuck online. Most people who play this game in multiplayer aren't going to be asking "where's the online?" When you go over someone else's house and play the game, and a third/fourth person finds out they have no choice other than to be one of two colors of Toads, questions will be asked. I mean, the fun that the game brings to the table will eventually outweigh the issue, but still, it's something that not even the most casual players will likely ignore.

Again, it's a minor complaint. It would've been interesting if, say, there was just ONE more character to play as. Anybody. Maybe Daisy or something as a kind weird parody of Super Mario Bros. 2 where you actually can play as one princess in order to save another.

That aside, again, the game is really good fun and is the definition of platforming bliss. It's really smooth, has a nice difficulty increase as you go along, has some very catchy music (I don't care what anyone says) and just offers some of the best "pure fun" moments you'll have with any game this year. I'm easily recommending it without even getting that far.

How is that even possible? You know if you send it to Nintendo to get it repaired they give you a new 1 year warranty...

I just wanted to say that I've been playing Mario games since Super Mario Bros came out when I was four years old. I've been a huge fan of the Mario series my entire life and this is easily the best Mario game I've ever played. Anyone who doesn't love this game has forgotten what these games are all about...

this is Mario

seriously i'm a little surprised that there is anybody out there who believes this is going to somehow underperform. It's MARIO.

not to mention this is the only BIG hardcore oriented game that is coming to the Wii starved audience this Fall/Winter 2009, it's got pretty much all the limelight for the platform.

I keep hearing people doubt the multiplayer.

Guys, the multiplayer is REALLY FUN. When you play with 1-3 other people, the game is like a completely different experience than it is in single player. You'll be playing through the same levels, but the way you play through them will be different. There will be chaos. There will be moments when you feel like being a dick to someone, and moments where you get satisfaction from helping them. Random things will happen and everyone will just have a good laugh.

The game works as advertised when it comes to multiplayer. It's a hectic, fun experience. Nintendo's choice to bring 2D Mario platforming into the multiplayer realm was pure genius.

It's not surprising that there's some doubt. There are still many people who legitimately think that Mario Galaxy bombed or something, so in their minds an 2D game will certainly bomb too!

and all you have to do is look at the sales of NSMB on DS as well. This game will have some very strong legs.

I will agree that the lack of titles heading to the Wii this holiday season is a very good thing for this game.

Thing I'm seeing on various boards is that most people think this game (due to the name, yes) is a remake of the DS game. I mean hell the name, even the cover art looks almost the same as the DS version. I think that hurts them, even if just a little.

Got a full group to play with so we're going pretty slow. Finished World 1 and called it a night. So much fun. Can't wait to play some more.

Two of the people I'm playing with complain about what I was wondering about pre-launch as well. They're decent at video games and know Nintendo characters but they have trouble sometimes keeping the two toads apart. Usually they mix up for a few seconds before they realize their character is in a different spot. They also don't really like the freezing when you pick up items because if they are in the air when it happens they usually fall to their death and die. Other than that, no other complaints from them besides wishing for more characters to choose from.

Indeed, a lot of aspects of the game are lazy retreads of the DS title. No doubt about it.

But your problem was you thought message boards were going to indicate how a Mario game was going to sell.

Let me put it this way... even IF this game actually WAS a remake of the DS title, layout-for-layout, it would still sell over a million copies its first month.

Up to the end of World 4...folks who have played know what I mean.

This game is what Super Mario World should have been... it's a real sequel to Super Mario Bros. 3.

Great, so far.

I have to say, though, as much as many critics have knocked it for not having online multiplayer, I expect they would have knocked the online multiplayer were it included. Thing is, it seems hard enough to get people to cooperate in this game locally. Could you imagine the non-stop griefing if it were online? It'd be fun for about five minutes, and then people would resort right back to local co-op or single-player. Nintendo knows their games. There are plenty of other things to get pissed at The Big N about. Lack of online multiplayer for NSMB Wii just doesn't seem like one of those things.

picked this up today, and promptly beat the first world, including the canon detour. good game thus far, though i dont like the 'shake' spin/grab stuff.

I have the game now, and the only thing that bothers me is that there are too many moments when you get hit by falling in between baddies. They really group too many enemies together too often. And the fact that they dance is a distraction which throws off my jumping.

Aside from that, I'm really enjoying myself.

I'm actually willing to agree with this.

Like I said, the "two Toads" thing is actually a more legitimate complaint, in my opinion, than the exclusion of online play. One of these things involves the actual personality of the game, where the other just involves the functionality. One would've probably been an easy fix if Nintendo could somehow establish some sort of logic for the fourth character, whereas the other involves the actual core fundamentals of the game and is something that actually needs to be considered, tested, and approved by the game's designers. And, I see the "it just wouldn't work that well" reason to actually be valid, since communication with people in the same room really does potentially mean the difference between fun and frustration.

yea, the game is fun as hell with local multiplayer now. so much laugh during the gameplay.
Nintendo simply doesn't have to put the online elements for this one, so better save it for the sequel.

I say "meh" to those complaining about the waggle stuff. It's awkward for the first couple of levels, but it's not a problem after that. I wouldn't say anything you do with "waggle" is as naturally and flawlessly integrated as, say, the spin attack in Mario Galaxy, but it's all good enough.

If you don't like using the waggle to lift or spin, why not use the remote/nunchuck controller scheme? It's simple to use, and you get two buttons for dash/grab. :P

That's what I've been using, but you still have to lift the remote to spin (despite the manual which seems to tell you that you should wave it from side to side), and lift the remote to pick up blocks or other characters. I agree with the person earlier -- just holding B trigger to pick up stuff seems like it'd make perfect sense, but maybe there's some conflict I'm not thinking of.

Also, it's a minor source of confusion when the user interface tells you to use buttons from the sideways control scheme, even when you're using the nunchuk one. (Is there any way to make the propeller hat popup motion notification go away without spinning every time you start a level?)

Pfft. Nunchuk.

Before we played the game earlier, my friend asked if the game just uses the remotes. I said it primarily uses just the remotes, but can also use the nunchuk. My brother then asked "why would you need the nunchuk?" and I said "...Exactly."

This isn't something like Smash Brothers, where the solo Wiimote was a simple but less efficient way to control things. NSMB Wii is a game that requires the bare minimum.

The game is perfect with the sideways Wiimote. I guess people with big hands would say otherwise, but whatever. Nunchuk just seems unnecessary to me.
