The Official New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread

I got this game yesterday and my 5 year old nephew was so happy that he showed it to everyone in the house! Will try 2 players mode with him later!:D

Step son not real son, so why would he care?!

I really hope you're not a teacher, pediatrician or school counselor.

Uncharted 2 is brilliant and cinematic and immersive. Modern Warfare 2 is intense and explosive and great. I enjoyed both immensely. But man, for pure unbridled fun a good Mario game has no equal, and this is a very good Mario game, and the multiplayer aspect really does take the fun to a whole other level. It's great gaming distilled down to its purest essence, sheer unmitigated joy. Fuck, I think this might wind up being my GOTY.

And Nintendo is going to clean up with this over the holidays. Classic 2D Mario that all generations can understand in a form that the whole family can enjoy together? Given the Wii's installed base and Mario's massive broad family appeal this is going to destroy at retail over the next six weeks.

Wow. This game more than exceeds expectations. Just got to world 5, found all star coins in the first 4 worlds and the secret exits. Some of the star coins in this game are downright diabolically placed. Level design is so good.

It's a great game and the invention in it totally lives up to classic Mario standards (unlike the DS game imo). That said I have two gripes:

-not a fan of the minimalist clean look this and the DS game have. It made sense at least on the DS as a sort of "back to basics" approach. I just wish a game that was so overflowing with ideas would have a look that was more than bare minimum. That said, I've only played single player so far and maybe it'll be a blessing in mp. I also concede that Mario Galaxy has an incredible presentation and I'm sure they'd rather focus on that title for the visuals.

-at a glance it seems people are not happy with the motion controls. I'm fine with them, but would much rather have been able to use a classic controller simply because after an hour my thumb REALLY hurts. Fighting Iggy in the ice castle? You have to be super accurate and having to guide yourself a lot and it just wears on you. That tiny numb of a dpad is smaller than even the NES's. This is the second game this year Nintendo has done this (Punch-Out being the first) where they've made an awesome tribute to a totally old-school title and failed when it comes to controller options.

No offense, but no father, step or no should be buying their 11 year old MW2....I played my fair share of violent games when I was that age, but things were different when it was 8 bit...

A real father would be there watching and explaining the differences between a game and reality, the playing of the game is not the issue, its the lack of parents there to explain what they see and how to adjust to it without becoming goofballs.

Ars Technica - New Super Mario Bros. Wii review: impressive, and then some

"New Super Mario Bros. Wii feels like a return to form for Nintendo, and the game certainly plays it safe with familiar graphics and gameplay. Buried inside the game is a deep, rich experience in both single- and multiplayer, however, and the amount of things to see and do is disarmingly vast."

"New Super Mario Bros. Wii is one of those games that will leave you disappointed after the first level, slightly happy after the first world, and then you'll be stuck with a huge grin on your face after blasting through the game with three friends. This is a magical game"

"It's not most graphically impressive game out there, but the level design is impeccable and the surprises will keep you smiling."

I just scored an easy 99 lives by successfully trying the old "bounce on the shell on the steps" at the end of 2-3. So awesome:)

I beat the midboss of World 2. I said I was only going to do three levels because I have work at first hour, but I got myself carried.

This game is awesome.

this is completely true

We'll find out more in 6 - 7 hours.

He never says it's a new game, Winter Olympics, NSMB DS, he's right no matter what. :lol

It could technically be a reference in a game that actually has nothing to do with Mario, like some of the sarcastic things in MadWorld, or a throw-away line from a Zelda: Spirit Tracks NPC. That's probably thinking too hard about it, though.

That is so beautiful.

Argh, can't wait for this to arrive. I've already went back and completed Yoshi's Island, got all the dragon coins in SMW, replayed SMB, SMB3 and Galaxy... I need more distractions for another two days.

Just made it to World 3 and stopped for the night. The last thing I want to do is blaze through this as quickly as possible.

This game is unreal in the level design department. It is definitely more difficult than NSMB DS, even in its early stages. And the placement of some of those star coins...you sadistic bastards, Nintendo.

Uncharted 2 might be my Game of the Year, but I don't think I'll look back on it like I will this game. The word "magical" sounds corny when used in a serious context, but I can't think of any other when playing this game.

Game was awesome. Game is awesome.

Beat Bowser. Still all the star coins to collect, and
World 9
.

Oh, thought you guys would be happy to know: once you beat the game, you can save at any time.

i'm disappointed in how easy this game is. there's some interesting things in it, but it still doesn't hold a candle to SMB3.

i'm sure we missed a bunch of stuff but i played about 4 hour with friends tonight and we were already in world 8. if it were just single player, we'd probably have beaten it.

it's great, the sucky player can just hit A whenever they want and save themselves from doom

Its funny how some of those review that complained about the "frustrating" multiplayer never mentioned this.

It's so weird seeing people saying the game is easy or how far they are, I'm only halfway through world 3 and I've probably died at least 30 times so far :lol I can tear through other 2D games like Viewtiful Joe and Ninja Five-O on hardest difficulty, and I'm generally pretty good at Mario games but OMG I suck so bad at NSMB Wii. Just on the mid-world castle in world 3, I've died probably 10 times in the second half of the level, two of those were from falling down a hole the second after killing the boss :lol A lot of fun though, it'll just take some time before it all clicks with me and I can play normally.

So this is a strong single player experience, yeah? Wife might play with me some but I'd probably end up going through most of the game solo...

the game in single-player mode is as good as golden-era Mario

Monday morning and I have to wait till Friday to get this.

That is if the Royal Mail doesn't mess up.

On the agony.

Meh, don't see anything wrong with that, my dad bought MOH : AA for my birthday when i was only 11 or 12.:lol
Game is fantastic btw, my only grip is the graphics, i wish they made the graphics cel-shaded or something. And the multi-player is really really fun, the comment about the frustrating multi-player had me worried, but nope game is still fun with multiple players, even when i'm playing with 4 year old brother. Though i haft to admit, it can get pretty chaotic at times, but that's a part of the fun in itself.

i'm surprised to see folks run through it w/o dying much. i'm pretty good @ the game, and mario in general, but going for those star coins will be the end of me. i even saw the green block of embarrassment once. (i refused to start the level w/ a power-up)

I NEED THIS GAME!
Also, i'd like to take this moment to wish Shigeru Miyamoto a happy birthday!
It's wonderful that at age 57, he's still the one giving us presents.

:D

This game isn't really that easy as far as Mario goes. I remember thinking that a few of the later levels in world 1 were pretty serious for world 1 status.

I think this is another case of people not realizing that these games seem easy only because of years of experience with the 2D Mario formula. I played SMW from start to finish for the first time at about the same time I played NSMB DS. The latter gets ragged on for its lack of difficulty when I thought the former was by far the more insultingly easy game.

i find that if you play this and IKARUGA at the same time, and do the sunday new york times crossword puzzle, the difficulty evens out and you'll lose a life every now and then.

am I a bad Mario player? I've always flown through early Mario games, but I died a few times during World 3.

The real question is how well are you playing Ikuruga, and what difficulty. The distinction can be huge for the implications of NSMBWii`s difficulty.

anyone else see black flickering specks in this game? for example on the left of the title screen. i tried a few other games and i dont see them in those but NSMB has them all over the place.

i'm not sure, i'm actually blind. i just hear the victory jingles.

uh-oh. this happened to me a while back with METROID PRIME 3, but i think it's unrelated to any particular game and has something to do with some funky issues with your wii. i sent mine in for repairs and they fixed it right up. it's a bummer of a time to have to do a repair though :/

Wii GPU is kaput

There have been two other people already in this thread with this - it's your Wii GPU by all accounts, and it's a free-repair type deal.

I imagine Mario is showing them up clearly because of the large areas of the same bright colors.

The commercial for this game in Europe (Holland) is so awesome. It nails the nostalgic feeling a lot of people will have regarding the Mario series.

Sigh, just four more days left... :(

is it wiimotes only for the control? I only have two at the moment and I think my 5-year-old daughter will want to join in. Although she does also enjoy just watching me playing a Mario game as if its a TV show :)

After work today - me and the New Super Mario Bros. Wii have a date, and I am ready and willing to go all the way.

Awesome comments thus far, 2D mario has always been a treat. :D

I got it yesterday because I forgot I preordered it way back when. But this game is the old school we love with a few new tricks. And I think that's why it works so well. This game is excellent and a game for anybody with a Wii.

I'll just kick back until January and wait for Tatsunoko vs Capcom and No More Heroes 2.

yup, Wiimote only.

No way.

Or maybe I'm just really, really good at SMW. The controls mesh with me perfectly, so I barely ever die in that game (except for friggin' Tubular. Damn you Tubular!).
I too find Super Mario World pretty easy. Buuuut considering I've been playing it for 18 years, it's kinda hard to fairly compare it to a game I've had for 20 hours.

I wonder though, why do Nintendo games never have different difficulties?
How would you do different difficulties in a Mario game? More enemies? The SMB1 trick of replacing goombas?
Drkirby said:
What about the spin attack in NSMBWii? It is preformed the exact same way as the one in Galaxy.
I know they're both "shake remote", but it sure doesn't feel the same when you're using the remote NES-style. I also think SMG can take it better because it's not a jump when used on its own, and isn't flaunting an unused B button.

Are the people who are saying the game is too easy playing co-op or something? I could see how that would be considered easy since you keep respawning, especially if you accumulated a ton of lives.
