The Official New Super Mario Bros. Wii Thread

I wonder how many people are going to play with fake co-op, so they get dual power-ups at every block, and have an anchor they can plop down before some of the trickier sections, for instant respawning. Then once you've got one past, just bubble the second player again and have them catch up without penalty. I did some reading, and apparently you don't have to play through the levels solo to get any
save file stars
.

I don't even have a second Wii Remote, in case you're wondering. :lol The idea just struck me.

So CC is not supported because of waggle, is that correct?

Completely tacked on shaking and tilting, yes. Could be mapped to an analog or shoulder button without detracting from the game one bit.

That Boss thing looks ideal for me, but the back seems as though it may be awkward to hold.

I might just use the Wiimote in the wheel as someone suggested in this thread.

It's a fairly good solution. I have Arthritis and I find I get claw hand from playing Wii Remote-only games. Having the controller thicker and symmetrical makes it far easier to hold.

Propeller suit is awesome! I don't care what the rest of GAF has to say. I love it.

*fist bump*

Seriously, it has become one of my favorite powerups of all time. I think it might even beat out Raccoon Mario... (not sure yet though, ask me again after I get further)

does having the M+ and jacket on help at all?

I swear by the jacket, but I can't imagine the M+ helping anyone with anything. It's so awkward to reach 1 and 2 even with my long fingers.

Mario saved the day last night.

My girlfriend found out that there are more medical complications with her dad's cancer treatment. It's just one more thing on top of a heap of everythings. This guy really can't catch a break... every day seems it's something new and she's been taking it VERY hard.

She was at a breaking point last night, just despondent and pretty inconsoleable.

When she calmed down a bit, I asked her to play 2 player Mario with me... and it was like instant smiles. Mario is my go to now when she needs a quick pick me up. The game just instantly has the appeal that momentarily washed away all the crap about her dad and his health and the family and all that BS.

I've never been happier in my entire life while playing Mario, he came through in the clutch for me.

It helps a bit. If you have one try the wii condom as well. It helps make it slightly symmetrical and if your thumb hurts between stages you can rub it on the rubber part for comfort. Sounds weird but it works for me.

Did anyone else get a red mario in a propeller suit shirt from gamestop? I haven't opened the bag yet to see the full design, wondering if anyone has a pic?

I love this game! Playing alone and with friends is just so much fun. Played with my gf and she loves it too. She took over the Wii to play through a good part of it.

Getting the toads, coins and secrets is making the game last longer too. Plus I want to beat it alone and multi.

After playing this I want more 2D games.

Count me in your club, man. I have a chronic disease (Crohn's) and last week I was diagnosed with a benign tumor. It was most certainly the shittiest day of my life, since not only the news itself is shitty, but my health is going downhill for like a month now. It was then when I bought SMB 5 that I felt the need to be happy and appreciate everything good. First day I got it I was playing World 1 with my friend and we had all sorts of fun, he then paused the game and told me "I swear to god I knew Mario would heal your wounds a bit". He know that I like Mario quite a lot and even calls me Mario sometimes :lol it was such a great moment to have a great amount of fun with my best friend while knowing he feels my pain, even at the shittiest time of my life. Seriously, without Mario and Mega Man I would have committed suicide :lol jk.

Mario is the best. Fucking best.

All the best for your girlfriend's dad :-)

And yeah, count me in The Cult of the Propeller. It has the potential to be my favorite power-up of all time. It's just so much fun to use.

I got to play this for a few hours the other day and I have to say....It's actually better then I had expected it to be. I really went in having very low expectations for this game after playing NSMB on the DS (which I hated) but this is really good. I will be buying this now.

Played it last night and got to world six. Actually, it was only halfway through world three, but
my sister found a secret exit that took us to a cannon
.

Actual co-op is really fun. We're both dying stupid deaths, but we've actually used teamwork to get some of the coins, which is cool to do. The competitive stuff is great, but she doesn't quite have the hang of it yet so those games are pretty one-sided.

Also, the difficulty is beyond what I imagined. I thought it would ramp up a bit more slowly, but you get into rotating platforms and shit pretty early on. That's pretty great.

oh my shit. this game is mothereffin' AWESOME! so much better than new super mario bros. ds. and so much fun in co-op. it looks great, the music is awesome and the sound quality is great.

so you've played the game in an hour, skipped over a majority of the levels, and somehow your opnion about the final game matters how?

... Hi, this is a thread for discussion.

I was asked a question about whether I felt this game was replayable.

It's obviously too early to tell. I obviously haven't played enough to know for sure. But I do know that when I replay SMB1, SMB2, SMB3, or SMW (which I still do; frequently--60+ hours on SMB1 on Wii VC alone) I use warps. I replay the 3d Marios less because you can't warp. Pretty much everyone can replay SMB1 in 10 minutes by going 1-1 1-2 4-1 4-2 8-1 8-2 8-3 8-4. It's definitely the most replayable of the games.

So, again, read my answer:

If you're just looking for the quick wham bam minimum stages runthrough, it's definitely more replayable than NSMB DS or YI or any of the 3d games... probably not as punchy for that runthrough type as SMB1 or SMB3.

This stuff is factually true.

Honestly, I think if someone really has issues with this game to the point where you actually dislike it, you're either way off from the target audience (which is as wide as it feasibly could be) or you're nitpicking to fit an agenda.

The game is as fun and tightly designed as I could have hoped and may just usurp LKS and Arkham Asylum as my favorite game of the year.

Truth ^^

It's my personal GOTY but I didn't go through Uncharted 2 yet so...

Pretty much my viewpoint too. It's just an exceptionally fun, gleeful title.

My dad died on October 30th. Last weekend my brother and I played through the game. Things felt normal again, at least for a little while. I think it's one of the few things that I've liked about 2009. This year sucked.

This is a great game to play with the family. Me, my wife, and 2 boys (7 and 3) all play and have a blast. The oldest is a master at popping in a bubble right before he dies, and the youngest will bubble up when he gets stuck or far behind and floats along till he feels safe again.

bought on amazon with the 3 dollar discount, free shipping, and 10 dollar giftcard.

cant wait to play it... but it will be a while till i get it.

It's a freaking great game, though I'm not really feeling the music (all those "bop-ba-bops" get on my nerves :P), find swimming without the penguin suit to be a bit sluggish, and wish you could play sans waggle with the Classic Controller. Some really great level design in this one, though I am not really finding it too challenging, apart from the castle of world 6. I'd say it's harder than World, and around the same challenge level as 3, but both Mario 2 USA and 2j are much harder.

I really find that they got the difficulty just right for singleplayer.

The levels are closer in length to SMW and the difficulty is closer to the challenging levels of SMB3, so you gotta think on your feet. Add to that jumping around like a maniac trying to find the Star Coins on your first playthrough (not something I suggest if you want to make the game easier on yourself, but something I'm doing because...well, why not) and you've got yourself a well tuned but very challenging 2D platforming experience.

It also looks a hell of a lot better in motion.

I dig the music. My wife digs how the enemies bop along with it. So yeah, I'm happy with the music overall. ;)

Do people find Super Mario Bro. 3 tough? World 8 has its moments, but the over all game (having played through within the last few months) is pretty easy. Super Mario World's S-Worlds, and 'Butter Bridge' always presented more of a challenge for me.

So far in this title, I feel like the overall level design is on par with previous titles, but the bonus coins add a great channel. I love this stuff, and it's personally the reason I think Yoshi Island and Donkey Kong Country 2 are the best platformers ever; fantastic level design with tough challenges on top of it all.

The music grows on you after awhile. Even though I havent played the game yet...the soundtrack has a few nice tracks that i'm hoping become Mario series staples.

SMB3 has always been a breeze for me, as far back as I can remember (World 8 is also incredibly easy once you figure patterns out). The only one that was kind of a challenge is the "little ships" stage, but once you get used to the speed it's easy, too.

For difficulty though, nothing beats Tubular in SMW. And of course SMB2j.

And I'll shame myself by admiting that I have never actually finished every stage of SMB or SMB2j. I can never get through I believe 8-2 or 8-3 in SMB...can't remember which one. I always had to have my brother do it. I should try it again in my older age.

I think I've only beat SMB and SMB3 each one time in one sitting. The former happened just a couple years ago on the Wii, and the latter happened many years ago when the NES was still working. I also beat them both (and Lost Levels) on handhelds thanks to save features.

A real father would be there watching and explaining the differences between a game and reality, the playing of the game is not the issue, its the lack of parents there to explain what they see and how to adjust to it without becoming goofballs.

Indeed bro.. My step son is smart enough to know the difference between video games and reality.. it's funny those that shelter their children IMO.. Educate them and they'll turn out to be fine adults..

Videogames don't make children violent.. giving your children little attention, beating them.. calling them names.. making them feel worthless.. yea that'll turn a kid into a headcase..

A violent videogame.. if they're in touch with reality... i dont' think so

Got my copy from Amazon today; played through the first couple of stages and finished the first Koopa kid fight in the fortress.

This game is already in my top five best games of 2009. There was something about NSMB DS that never really hooked me like the other 2D Mario games have, but NSMB Wii brings back that old feeling; the jumps are a little floaty, but I got used to that quickly, and everything is great. The control is spot-on and the waggle is thankfully kept to a minimum, love the level design, love the new power-ups, and the music's not bad. I also like the little touches like the enemies stopping to dance at certain points in the BGM, and nostalgic stuff like the slight change in music when riding Yoshi, and the SMB3 Koopa Kids music.

Fantastic game. Can't wait to get back to playing it. :D

It's the real way to do it imo.
Grabbing the coins in the first playthrough makes you enjoy the levels through and through. I don't want to do it at a second playthrough with the feeling of nouveauté gone.

Just popping my head into this thread to say that this game is rockin' my socks off. It's so much better than I thought it would be when it was first announced. In fact, I honestly think it's up there with SMB3 and SMW. I'm just starting World 6, and I'm sure I'll be replaying it once I've finished.

RE: the music, although some of it is forgettable (I don't think any of it is 'bad'), I'm loving the tune that plays in the sky scenes (where you have to jump on the rotating blocks). Is that an old tune or a new one? I can't remember! :D Oh, and I love the tune that plays during the overworld of World 3. Great stuff...

yeah, guys. It's just an extra star on your profile. Does it really matter THAT much?

If it unlocked something cool, I guess I could see why you would be upset.
I beat the VC version of Lost Levels over 24 times just to get the 24 stars on the title screen.

It helps that it's my favorite platformer of all time, though.

Pretty much.

I could nitpick almost every Mario game to death if I really wanted to, but I usually know what I'm getting myself into with each game and set expectations accordingly. This game delivers.

It's too easy to cheese challenges in SMW by grabbing a Yoshi, cape, cape in reserve and just flying over or using a high jump to skip most of the challenges.

Granted most of the really hard individual stages in SMB3 are optional but some of the regular stages in 6-7-8 are balls hard to people who don't know them back to front. Same with some of the later forts and airships. Death central. You have limited resources in your goody bag so you can't be willy nilly even with mushrooms and such.
