The Official Okami Thread of Awesome

At the very beginning of the game, one against
Waka
... (the other one I don't remember)... I didn't have lots of techniques/weapons or divine attributes upgraded... and I used to suck too :p ...

Best song: the ominous pre-boss fight music. Makes me think "Something big is going down."

Finished yesterday! 36 hours.

SPOILARZ:

A f*cking flying saucer? Really? Yeah, screw that. It totally ruined the game's awesome ancient Japanese vibe. I was able to forget about it when Mr. Bamboo's wife flew off in a rocket, but this was the ending of the story. Are Waka and Amaterasu aliens?

What was with Waka's nonsense about "Remember when we battled Orochi on the Celestial Plain?" Did that happen before Shiranui first arrived in Kamiki Village?

And the whole Amaterasu/Shiranui thing is giving me a headache. Shiranui died fighting Orochi 100 years ago, then a statue of Shiranui was made, and then the statue was brought to life, but it's not Shiranui, it's a different sun god? What? On a similar note, I was super pumped when everyone started praying for me and I looked exactly like Shiranui with all the flowing white tassles, but then totally bummed that I didn't have any of the awesome uber-abilites Shiranui had in the owl fight (cherry bombs creating HUGE explosions, namely).

I loved the way the Ninetails fight was set up. Both tricking you into thinking it represented a new brush technique by appearing as a consteallation, and totally catching you off guard by showing that he had the ability to paint on your same canvas, really had me buying into Ninetails as a legit force to be reckoned with. Unlike Orochi, who is just long and tedious to defeat, Ninetails is actually an enjoyable challenge.

I understood the setup behind the final boss fight, in that you'd gradually regain all of your powers and use them against Yami, but the Catwalk ability wasn't even essential. I was expecting there to be a weakspot you could only get an angle on after climbing up high, but all there was at the top of each pedestal were completely optional treasure chests for stuff like Vengeace Slips and Exorcism Slips.

Not only did I never die once, I never even had to use an Astral Pouch. There's always enough bones on hand or enough cash available to buy more. Sure, a game isn't doing its job if it causes the player to die constantly, but it felt like there were just too many safeguards in place. Like I would have had to go out of my way just to die.

F*CK BLOCKHEADS. For one, I didn't figure out that I needed to hit the weak spots in the order that they appeared until the 3rd blockhead encounter (and there are only about 5 in the game). And when I stumbled upon the
Blockhead Grande with 8 spots to memorize, I threw my hands in the air and gave up. Whatever was on the other side of that blockhead, it wasn't worth it.

Susano's character development was fantastic, especially when you found out that Nagi was just as much of a lazy-ass bum and thick-headed klutz as Susano was.

I was really cold on the combat at first, since all you had to do was mash square. Then when new brush abilites and equipment started opening up, the combat became an arena that encourages experimentation. Because this experimentation rarely ever punishes you, I was truly impressed by the balance the combat system struck. When it came to the basic scrub imp enemies, I would use my equipped weapon first, then for the next batch some power slashes, then for the next batch some cherry bombs, then some inferno, then some
veil of mist
... essentially, I was adding my own variety to the combat, so it never got boring. Half the fun was figuring out which technique was required to open up a new enemy's defense.

Why can't I speed up the text for certain cutscenes? (The ones where it's more than just switching the camera back and forth between Ammy and the NPC) There are the cutscenes where the jibberish talk really gets on my nerves.

Although I had every intention of getting to the end of the story as quickly as possible, I couldn't help but appreciate the amount of extra stuff on the side there was to do. Finding stray beads, "farming" demon fangs, etc. Except for the
"Crazy Taxi on lilypads" thing in Sei'an City. Both that and the "have to push the ice ball with Galestorm because you can't touch it" puzzles got on my nerves.

The canine guardians were tougher fights than some main bosses. o_O

There were several instances where I literally stopped and smelled the roses. It simply can't be overstated just how captivating the visuals are, regardless of how shitty your television may be.

Before Okami, I was on some kind of "uber-violent" game streak. Needless to say, I get a lot of criticism from my parents for playing so many games about shooting people and monsters (with Gears of War now being one of my favorite games). On the flip side, Okami rewards you with bringing peace and beauty back to the world, and you don't have to murder dudes with a glock in your hand to do it. A very nice change of pace. And I dare say, the whole experience helped me feel like a better human being. :D

She wasn't his
wife, he adopted her as her grandchild
...
You could say that
Waka is an alien :P, I don't know about Amaterasu (Celestial Plains = Heaven?)

What was with Waka's nonsense about "Remember when we battled Orochi on the Celestial Plain?" Did that happen before Shiranui first arrived in Kamiki Village?
Yes...

And the whole Amaterasu/Shiranui thing is giving me a headache. From Okami manual:
Amaterasu (You):

This powerful god has the power to command the Celestial Brush. A century ago, Amaterasu lost the physical body that the god had been inhabiting during a bitter struggle to seal away Orochi. With the help of the wood sprite Sakuya, Amaterasu inhabited the statue of an ancient village god and returned to the world. The heated battle against Orochi left Amaterasu without many powers held in times past, but Amaterasu will journey to reover those powers while saving the life of the land...
There is a legend about a god that dates back a long, long time. The people knew this god as Okami.

It goes like this (I believe)...
- Shiranui was a wolf that the goddess Okami Amatersu inhabited (the wolf was the physical form of the god, a reincarnation if you want).
- After the battle with Orochi 100 years ago, Shiranui died because of her wounds (the goddess Okami lost all her powers when her physical body died).
- Town erects statue of Shiranui to honor her.
- One hundred years later, Orichi comes back and the Wood Sprite brings back Okami Amaterasu from the statue (a new reincarnation has been born).

It was kind of easy, I usually don't like hard games so it was fine for me... but I bet you didn't try the underground Devil Gates in Kamui and Ryoshima (
lots of Wakas and EvilRaos against you at the same time, the crow and bull enemies...
) :P ...

You get a Gold Dust, a Stray Bead and some treasure...

sorry for bump, but this game deserves the praise

finished the game about an hour ago, and I can truly say that this game is a masterpiece. Okami has a lot of heart and you can just feel how proud the makers must be of it

Okami does indeed own. I want to play it again, but I'm holding out for a Wii announcement before I spend so much time on it again.

Holy unnecessary bump!

I just finished the game a few minutes ago...

My totals:
Time: 62+ hours
Animal tome: 100%
Treasure list: 100%
Dojo techniques: 100%
Stray beads: 100
Demon fangs: 700+
Sun fragments: ALL
Money: 8000000+
Praise: 7000+
Weapons and gold dust: 15/15
Brush techniques upgrades: ALL
Enemies defeated: 1500+
Times I died: 2
Divine attributes: FULL upgraded
Karmic Transformers: ALL (this is a really cool thing)

The only thing I didn't complete was the fishing... I tried it a couple of times besides the obligatory ones, and I didn't find the fun...

I liked the ending (although not everything was cleared)... it reminded me of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (with everybody cheering :P)...

The final fight was cool and the music was really good too...
Some of my favorite tunes in the game: both Waka's themes, Rao's and Kushi's songs and the one that plays when you fight
Orochi
... among a few others...

The one thing I've noticed in all Kamiya's games (Okami, DCM, VJ, all their sequels):
Why do I have to fight all the bosses at least twice?
:lol ... I mean, I killed
Orichi
3 times... :lol (and do not let me talk about the
spider
:P )...
Don't get me wrong, I love being able to fight some
bosses more than once
, but I prefer it when is not obligatory (like in Castlevania or even Majora's Mask)...

Overall, I liked the game a lot... and I think I'll do a quick reply (being overpowered and having collected everything already) before I move to the next game in my backlog (SMT: Devil Summoner, Baten Kaitos Origins or Tales of the Abyss, can't decide yet >__< ).

WOW @ my stats! :D

Lets see if I can replicate them when I play the Wii version...

1st post in this thread. Been playing okami for about 13 hours for the 1st time. PS2 version - on my USA ps3. Game is superb and shits all over the clusterfuck that is twilight princess.

I've
beat orouchi - and just got to the capital city/sunken boat area
- so yes, 13 hours in and the game really does, the ZELDA formula but much much better. The dungeons aren't formulaic and the overworld is really amazing fun. The game is a graphical tour-de-force and the gameplay just so good. In wolf form vs wolf link, Amaterasu is just much more compelling to use - and considering this was on PS2 hardware, it really does shit on Twilight Princess graphically.

Simply awesome and I'm glad I finally got around to playing this. While playing it, being aware of the demise of clover made it all the more poignant as we're playing through. Its really sad that this didn't get the sales it deserved, both in Japan and the US. Hopefully okami wii will sell really well.

what the

i was like 'since when did i make the Okami Wii thread, that version sucks'

but then I forgot i made the PS2 thread. glad to see you're enjoying it, Jax.

Near the end (I think) and I need a little nudge. The past 2 times I put in a play session, I ran around for about an hour and couldn't figure out what to do next. So I figured either bump the ancient GAF topic or stop playing. I WON'T stop playing as the game is too great.

I just
beat the Catcall Tower segment and received the Cat brush technique. I'm fairly certain I've traveled to every "cat" marker on the map and most are just paths to Stray Beads or treasures. There's one cat statue right near the Catcall Tower that brings you to a little bluff with a guy watching the sky looking for shooting stars. I figure it is either something with this shooting star dude, or it has something to do with the Sea Monster God that is still swimming around right off of Ryoshima Coast. I can hop on the little whale buddy and swim around, but the Sea Monster keeps eating me and I wash up on the Coast.

IIRC, you have to put some stars in the sky for him. Just drop a dot in the sky.
