The Official Penny Arcade Thead

Question - and this may not be the place for it, but what the hell - is there an OT-esque topic for Child's Play each year? I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to have one keeping track of its progress and events going on (though some of the events have already finished.)

Nothing that I've seen. But I do usually notice most big Child's Play fundraising efforts- stuff like OKTOBERKAST, Desert Bus, various other marathons, etc- get threads anyway, so maybe it's by the by to have a CP thread. Couldn't be bad though (this thread isn't really appropriate for it, by PA's admission anyway, they try to keep the comic and the charity separate).

I always love when they do their D&D comics, despite knowing nothing about the game beyond the basic elevator pitch concept, but today's comic is particularly hilarious. Two part comic, so I've included Wednesday's above it.
It looks like this might be a good-sized series - they're at #3 now. I know they like abrupt endings to their multi-part stories, but it sure looks like they'll do at least one more part.

Seems like Tycho is laying down some 'dreaded continuity' once again! Haha.

They've brought back the 'Buy a Print' option for each strip now, and in doing so Gabe reminded me of an old-ish favourite. "I put a Pokemon in the chamber and I pull the fucking trigger! BLAM!" :lol

hey guys what if they did a d&d comic and the joke was "DMs hate their players and try to kill them horribly"

i'm just throwing out crazy ideas here

the Penny-Arcade boys are definitely having one of their off years as far as consistently funny strips are concerned. a whole lot of treading water as they seem to be getting a bit disconnected from everything.

Also, while not the exact thread but still relevant, has anyone said how terrible their 'other' comic Trenches is at all? Because it is truly terrible.

i know you expected more from the comic auteurs who once mined such rich veins of untapped humor as "xbox controllers are very large" and "john romero looks like a girl"

Geez, who let all the HATERS in

(Does my generally loose sense of humour make me biased on comedy matters? Because I think all their stuff is fine. The D&D stuff, I posted that because the second strip really got me and it made no sense to post it out of context. :/)

It's all about the execution, guys.

The guy who did PvP making another shitty comic? Get outta here.

Its been a loong time since I thought they were funny, but they are pleasant to read ... if that makes any sense.

I look at them, feel like the art is okay, they try not to get in trouble anymore and its altogether readable.

hahaha I love it. TO SAAAAAAAND.

I keep up with Trenches for the Tales bits which are often quite good. The comic is pretty average for Kurtz and the tue/thur-only schedule makes the pacing of the story hard to care about.

The schedule might be its biggest problem. The space between Thursday and Tuesday is too much for comic with a continuous story.

Regarding the typo form the newspost

There is a Typo (which Gabriel calls a “Tychpo”) in the strip, which Gabriel is refusing to fix because I must “learn.” It is philosophically of a piece with grinding a pet’s nose into the fibers of a fouled carpet. I will see what kind of genuflections are required to make the comic whole.

To be fair that's just an accident, in fact I'd say it's more likely Gabe puts the words onto the actual strip.

Huh, no. The real issue here is that something is not comprised of other things, something comprises other things:

Wrong: This book is comprised of ten chapters
Right: This book comprises ten chapters.

I know what you mean, I am a huge fan of their work but have noticed that in the last year it's not been as laugh out loud funny. I do love some of their "non funny" work, like Blood and Oil (? the robot noire) and Lookouts though.

Maybe having Scott Kurtz in their office is having a negative effect on them, like he is draining their creativity. Is it wrong I can't stand that guy? I remember on the D&D podcast he was eating something loudly right into the mic and it just made me rage, that and he is bitter as all hell and hates everyone it seems.

All I know is that Tycho is the opposite of readable and it's gotten worse as time goes on. If I wrote that way for high school and college essays I'd get a big fat F.

Some people write for clarity, like Isaac Asimov, and it's a wonderful gift. Some people write for baroque ornamentation. It's much more tiring to read, but when Tycho's on, it's like poetry.

I would like to formally state my displeasure for this current crop of strips from various guest artists.

Between stuff like this, continuities about D and D or other random things (Lookouts, Automata etc), it seems like the odds of getting a Penny Arcade strip actually about video games these days is worse than 50:50.

The recent guest artist strips are lazy, obnoxious and not funny.

The usuall boring lull period I suppose. Back to form come February.

Feels like theyve specifically picked unfunny guest writers to almost prop up their own lacklustre year. I think they're dangerously skirting the "done" stage of the comic unless they can get back to grips with subject matter rather than the self obsessed stuff.

Even mediocre Penny Arcade is still better than most other strips out there, and they've proved it with these guest strips.

Two of the three start with "we couldn't think of an idea for a strip". Really?

I'm going to admit to really enjoying the Blur contribution.
Goddamn Blur has a history of entertaining me.

I have enjoyed their work more than any single publisher.

As big of a defender of Mike's ever-changing art style as I am and how I would argue how much better he's gotten over the years, I really dislike it when he uses solid colors as backgrounds. He's gotten so good at experimenting with textures lately that it's always jarring when there's a huge amount of negative space in a comic with nothing going on. Fuck it, toss a gradient back there or something :/
