those are some huge cut backs on the ps2 version..almost everything looks downgraded..textures, lighting, models, models completely gone..plus the fact that all the cut scenes are now movies..pretty major differences...it still looks decent though and the game is great no matter what.

Indeed, the lighting seems to have taken quite a large hit. There been any shots or video of the
lava room?
yet? Either way im sure PS2 owners who have never played it before couldnt give a shit, and im buying it since im a sucker for anything RE. Probably play through it once to see the additions (though it appears there more cuts ;p) and then go back to the GC version.

lava room looks just as good but its missing the heat haze effect. Somebody uploaded some gameplay movies from the PS2 version recently. It might have been an old version though, maybe the final version looks even better?

We don't even need a review for this game. They handled it well and only thing people need to know is it's awesome and that's a fact!!
i want something to keep me busy till the game is here. a video review seems good. i've already watched the demo playthrough 3 times!!!! :D

If I want to completely take advantage of this version, I'm trying to play it at a friends house to take full use of the higher resolution less dilthering graphics to balance it all out on widescreen display.

Damn, I don't realize how lucky I am to have played it in January. :D

I didn't play until summer. I thought I would eventually get to it since I had too much to play, but then my friend lent me the RE4 demo disc to check it out, I was being blown away, the next day went straight to Circuit City to pick up a copy.

well by the time re4 was originally released in europe i was playing mgs3 and gt4. then god of war came. it's just now around this time the wait has really been felt. i should get PES5 (WE9) next week, so the wait isnt really that long if you look at it with another perspective :)

It's only been portable games and File 2 since then for me. :(

i feel yah man. its too bad companies release their killer aps only in q1 or q4. barely anything between june and september.

RE4 on PS2 looks like a completely different game to me.
The lightning is gone , but they added some orange/brown color filter.
Leon's hair??
There is less texture variation and some objects are missing.

I wonder how the rest of the game looks ... especially the last areas of the game... the lightning there is amazing on the GC version... and without its just not the same game anymore. Its a shame a perfect game like RE4 is being ported to the PS2 its like... porting Zone of the enders, Metal gear solid 3 or Halo to the Gamecube or DS...
It looks amazing for PS2.. but doesn't king kong look decent for DS?

Did you all buy Ridge Racer DS if it came out later? because it was the superior version , because of the new control system? Even if you knew it was complete garbage graphics wise?

I feel sorry for the people who didn't buy the GC version when it came out... its as perfect as a game can be. Many people will disagree in this horrid times when Ridge Racer DS sells more then Castlevania DOS... it makes me sad :'(

That's bit extreme to make such point isn't it? You're comparing games that are technology wise a generation apart to RE4?!

A complete different looking game? Come on!!

You can go ahead and say the PS2 version sucks anytime time now, Ntard.

Way to make a point with Ridge Racer DS, which had inferior gameplay, inferior controls and inferior graphics. PS2 version of this game has identical gameplay, slightly worse graphics (but you can have real widescreen this time), and additional levels and content.

As for later stages of the game, there were videos available in older thread. The lava room for example was very simillar looking, with one lighting effect missing from what I remember.

well i skipped over the GC version for the PS2 version since it has actual anamorphic widescreen mode. the GC version does look better in those comparison screens, but its also running at a lower resolution.

Finally got a chance to look at the comparions pics, I was at school and the monitor was way too dark. The two biggest difference is details and color, I guess they really did use 24-bit, it really sticks out side by side especially Leon's jacket. The bleeding hues of greenish pinks look to gone looking more solid.

Knock it off. This is a discussion thread about a game, not one for you to troll like mad.

You knock it off too.

Looks to be a faithful port. I want to see some comparison shots of the huge cathedral-like larvae sack room (the one which you can shoot down in the center) in the Castle,
where Ashley is kidnapped
. It looked so damn good, I hope Capcom ported it perfectly.

Also, the underground caves, mines and laboratory. We need comaro-shots.

I'm thinking it loses that sheen look.

If someone told me what image capture software works on a Mac mini or PowerBook 12", I could do a Game-Science editorial on the differences.

I guess the game's scenes aren't running on engine like on the GC. Talk about taking a shortcut.

seems so

the demo has like 500MB dedicated towards movies. pretty enormous

So basically they played through the game on the GC and recorded a video of every real-time cutscene. Then they synchronized the movies with a timer which activated an input event handler precisely when the QTEs occur? Is that what Capcom did on the port?

Pretty much. That's why the movies look so close to the GC ones.

weaksauce. :(

Indeed, since they already got the PS2 engine up and running they might as well go full tilt with it and be consistent. It's a shame considering cinemas are the devs time to shine with the best controlled product output.

i wonder how reviews will play out. will reviewers assume they're real time cause they were on GC? reviewers cant even figure out if a game is running in 60/30 FPS...

i dont see what the big deal is? seems like capcom made a smart move. if we cant even tell the difference then whats bad about it?

It'll make it a little awkward in the CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE^H^H^H^TAP A OR DIE segments.

i dont see how it will make it awkward. most people wont even notice it. the real time cutscenes in the GC version acted like CG movies to begin with...it's not like you have direct control over the "QTE" events. either you pass it or you DIE!!!!

Well, won't scenes take a little longer to load up, not to mention the graphics might be a little different than the actual game?

More RE4 Demo Stuff - Following up the earlier links to THIA, more demo stuff has come online including some run through video, screenshots, and scans of the demo cover. What has been most interesting to note however is pre-rendered versions of the cutscenes on the disc, which is a change from the real time GameCube versions. Controversy? Perhaps. We shall wait to see what people find on the final product.

So in other words, Capcom took the real-time cutscenes from the Gamecube version and turned them into FMV for the PS2 version. Can't say I am really surprised as it's basically a given the PS2 can't do a lot of things visually the Gamecube can. I think this was the best thing Capcom has done for the PS2 version to make up for the minor downgrades in the in-game graphics. The only negative to it is that the cutscene graphics will look much better than the in-game graphics. Please do note that although they are FMV's now the visual quality on them wasn't improved, rather the cutscenes in the PS2 version look exactly as they did in the Gamecube version.
