I haven't looked into that really, but I know there's supposed to be two boss fights, and I think I've read that they're
Krauser and a human version of Saddler.
 
Just got my Premium Edition. Very nice packaging, although the GC one had a bigger cell art.

Capcom, I hate you. You're going to make me get the regular edition for the standard packaging. >[

Got my Collector's Pack in. Yeah, the Ada figure looks nowhere near as good as advertised. >:(

Regarding the game itself, anyone else notice how garbled the ingame audio is?
 
I picked it up today at TRU in that buy 2, get 1 free sale. I stood there for a good 10 minutes debating between the GC and the PS2 version. I have yet to open the PS2 version just in case there is a reason to switch it out.

Come on people. I need impressions... should I just open it up and go for it, or change it out??

I've played through RE4GC 3 times, and have just finished Chapter 1 on the PS2 version. Here's some real quick impressions:

- Graphics are better on the GC version. The PS2 version is slightly blurrier in certain areas, but looks pretty damn decent overall especially considering the conversion. Texture work especially looks good.

- If I didn't already know the cutscenes were FMV on PS2, I wouldn't be able to tell.

- Controls really take some getting used to, as their more sensitive on the Dual Shock. Aiming/zooming with the rifle especially takes some adjustment.

- The PS2 version seems to skew a bit harder, as most of the barrels you break yield almost nothing in terms of ammo and the villagers seem to take a little more punishment.

- The biggest hit this version takes is in the sound department. Ingame audio sounds REALLY muffled at times. Footsteps, weapon-fire, voices, and such are all scaled back. Cutscene audio remains crystal clear.

I'll play a lot more tonight (can't wait to see the castle), but this is what I've noticed so far.

So would you say that a first play through should be done on the GC or PS2 version. Ive got the sealed up on sitting next to me. I need to make a decision, lol.
 
Played the PS2 version a bit. Graphics are not as good, and it's pretty noticable if you've played through the GC version lately (although they're not bad by any means, don't get me wrong). I'm not a graphics whore at ALL, but you can definetely tell the difference at a glance, my girlfriend's never even played either one, and she commented on the graphics not being as good. They also don't seem as sharp either for some reason, which is odd because I've got a component setup on my PS2 here, and not on my GC. Might just be me though. The controls when you move around don't feel as tight, but the aiming feels really good, possibly better than the GC version. There's the mentioned sound problems as well. Also, has anybody else noticed any kind of ghosting/after image of the people when they're talking on the walkies? It's really noticable, and I don't remember that in the GC version. Is it a glitch, or are they going for some kind of effect?

I'm very early in, haven't gotten to any of the slowdown/loading problems the game supposedly has. Even without those, unless the new Ada missions are the best thing EVER, I'd personally reccomend picking up the GC one, and renting this for the new missions, unless you only own one system, or are a RE whore like me and pick up both. Unless Seperate Ways is the best thing to ever happen in gaming, GC is my definitive edition, sorry folks.
 
I finished the first chapter and I'm still getting used to this new over the shoulder perspective. I mean its a huge jump from older camera views from the past 6 resident evil games I've played. So far, I like the game. Plus this steel case did a better job in holding two discs unlike the Halo 2 Limited Edition one with the two discs just stacked.
 
We are gonna start needing roller coaster pictures for this thread.

The reviews say the differences arne't worthy caring about, but you guys say otherwise.

To me the graphics are a non-issue. When you're "into" the game it's barely noticeable, IMO. It's still the same great game and honestly I like the PS2 controller more for this game. I'm just having an easier time playing it - not that I thought the Cube version is hard, but I just like the PS2 controller more overall. Also the Premium case is very slick - I love the design of the inside of the case. Very nice. All in all I think this is better than the Cube version, graphical meanderings aside. I wasn't expecting a perfect visual port.

dude...it's easily one of the best games this gen. It's wonderful on GC. It's so good, I'll probably pick up the PS2 version for the extras. There's no roller coaster involved. Open one up and play it, or read overwhelming reviews for both. The only other game going to be played about this is fanboi cred and I assure you, you will enjoy either version of RE4 a lot more.

Alright, I'm going to crack open the PS2 one. If I really want the GC, I can get it when it drop to 20 bucks.
 
I think the sound is a bit worse, but at the same time I think I'm getting better direction on my surround sound than I did on the Cube version... but probably not by much.

I just got the PS2 version, and played a bit.

The graphics are definitely different. If you've never played the Cube version, you probably wouldn't really notice or care, but if you have like me, the difference is obvious. The first major thing to catch my eye was the forest floor, the leaves don't look nearly as detailed this time. But not really a big deal in the long run.

I think the controls are fine. It took just a little adjusting, but I worried it wouldn't feel right after playing Cube RE4, but it's fine. I do prefer the Cube just because I love the controller so much, and probably partly since I played that version first.

If you have a PS2, there's really no good reason not to pick this game up, if you don't own the Cube version. Of course, there are still good reasons to get it if you do own the Cube game (like myself).

The price is also right-never has a game as good as RE4 debuted at $39.99.
 
The main thing that bothers me about the graphics is they're definetely not as rich. The first part of the game, everything just looks washed out, it makes a large difference. Also, has anybody noticed that dynamite apparently will no longer go off in villager's hands? Twice now I got them to light it, and either ran off or shot them to preven them from throwing it so it'd explode, and it never happened. One guy in the house towards the end of the first chapter stood there with it lit to throw at me for about a minute before I finally got tired of waiting for it and killed him. What the fuck ;_;.

I noticed the same thing... almost killed me, too. =(
 
Load times are between areas, it's noticable but they're not bad or anything. The load screen itself is lame though. Most of the cutscenes are NOTICABLY FMV, but it's not horrible or anything.

Doesn't it happen like that in the GC version, too? I've tried doing the exact same thing, and I've never seen one blow up on its own before being tossed. The only way I'd been able to get it was by actually shooting the dynamite while they're holding it.

No, in the GC one you could get them to light it, then say shoot them in the leg once or twice and it'd go off before they could throw it.
 
Yeah, I forgot to mention how washed out the village looks. Indoor areas look fine for the most part, but the exteriors look pretty bland compared to the GC version.

As for which one to play, I'd say it doesn't really matter if slightly muddier graphics and REALLY muffled sound don't bother you. If you want the full experience, play the GC version. I don't mean to sound like a Nintendo whore at all -- RE4 should be experienced regardless of platform -- but the GC version is the better of the two.
 
Hm, you can see... well I guess I better spoiler tag it since we might have people just now playing through the game...

After the lake boss when nightfall comes, you can see Leon's flashlight better... in the Cube version it just looked like a light was strangely coming from Leon, but now you can tell a flashlight is strapped to his belt... it's more defined. Looks slightly like a lightsaber penis. Also the lake water visuals are different... the surface is more calm but I think it still looks good. They also got rid of that cool mist effect when it's raining.

Not a big deal, but a difference nonetheless.

edit: okay, now I'm truly upset, finally, about something...

No Ashley boob jiggle :(
 
How long did it take for the original thread to go into full swing, with reply after reply.

I'm looking forward to some reactions from PS2 only owners, on gameplay, graphics, also hope to see some video posted from Seperate Ways soon.
 
About the graphics...just by looking at the FMVs(yep, pretty much every cut-scene has been FMV'd, even some of the ones that have user input :P) in the PS2 port you can tell that pretty much everything has been downgraded. The GC rev pretty kinda has a different "look" to it in terms of ambience, thanks to its more robust lighting model(SOOOOOOO noticeable in the fight with El Gigante). Water effects(or lack thereof) are also pretty pathetic(Capcom's fault there, I've seen much better stuff on other PS2 games). Still, RE4 PS2 looks pretty damn nice(it's no "OMG HOW CAN PS2 DO THIS", though :P), but whatever...it's the gameplay that has hooked me, not the graphics.

So far I think I'm having more fun with this than I did with SotC. Teh sacrilege.
 
I just finished Chapter 1-3 with the Lake Monster. My impressions so far will pull comparisons to previous Resident Evil titles mostly from the Outbreaks:

I have played almost every Resident Evil title with the exception of Resident Evil Survivor on PSX. But I am finding myself so far still liking the two Outbreak games more than RE4. This new over the shoulder perspective has its downsides when fighting numerous enemies trying to surround you. I've been grabbed by enemies from the side or behind when attacking from the front. It gets worst when the enemy throws dynamite sticks and you don't know where it landed because you are not looking the direction of the thrower...BOOM. Similarly, Resident Evil Dead Aim(Gun Survivor 4) employs the same over the shoulder camera view like RE4 but just a bit zoomed out more when you are exploring but shifts to 1st person when shooting. Maybe its the nostalgia camera perspective talking, but I'll give more impressions as I progress further in the game.

Leon's knife attack IMHO and so far for me is just to cut open boxes/barrels, and kill enemies I knocked to the ground. I sort of wished Capcom would have added David King's 4 hit knife combo from Resident Evil Outbreak File#2(which isn't just a matter of mashing the X button 4 times to execute but takes timing to pull off). Also the ammo cap to me was a suprise. I can only hold 50 rounds of 9mm ammo then if I collect more it will take up another space in my inventory? WTF. Past Resident Evil titles would let you combine the same ammo, no matter how much you collect, and not take up anymore space. Seems like a step backwards but the new attache inventory is welcome addition to the series. I like the fact I can move items around in my inventory and discard the items I don't need too. Resident Evil Outbreak games allowed your character to only hold 4 blocks of space for items unless you played as Yoko Suzuki, which was really restricting when you wanted to carry important items but with no room to put them. I do appreciate that Leon can purchase new attache cases to increase his inventory space. Nicely done Capcom.

Resident Evil 4 allows players to now aim and shoot at different places with the new hit zone aiming system. I just think of this as Splinter Cell aim/shooting without the ability to move from your position. Resident Evil Outbreak file#2(if you do not count Gun Surivior 2) was the first Resident Evil title to allow your character to move and shoot at the same time. Even with this, your character will walk slowly while aiming a weapon and not at the same speed as sprinting. I think Capcom could have added the same technique here in Resident Evil 4 to a success. Would have made backing up while shooting enemies much easier and more handy like I do in Outbreak file#2. I hope Capcom will add this feature again for Resident Evil 5.

And for my graphics comments to answer all the Cube and PS2 fans arguing over which version is the best. Graphics are great for the PS2(leagues beyond Code Veronica X, Resident Evil Dead Aim, and the two Outbreak titles). To the Nintendo RE4 owners only, graphics are better on the Cube version than on the PS2. But the difference is so small that only hardcore gamers are going to nitpick the differences(To which we already have danced around). I agree that the hardcore RE4 cube only owners make it seem that RE4 for PS2 looks like Code Veronica X or Even Resident Evil Dead Aim. I used to think that the Resident Evil Outbreak titles(which look great both in gameplay and cutscenes for a 2004 PS2 title) would be the best Capcom could do for a PS2 Resident Evil title. But Capcom proved me wrong with this port of Resident Evil 4 for PS2. To the casual eye, they both look the same. Again the RE4 Cube version looks better than the PS2 version but at minimum. To me, the difference is like Viewtiful Joe on the Cube and PS2. Both look the same to me, but Cube owners would argue that their version of Joe looks better.

This is what Shinji Mikami want to give you new experience , new style of horror . Get more real experience with behid shoulder camera while you won't know what happen around.

This is not an FPS game , you complain about the new camera perspective but you want the character has ability to shoot while running ?
 
Ah RE 4. I have missed you. I think it has been a month since I last beat the game.

I had both versions running today in the same spots, and while the GC version looks and sounds cleaner, the PS2 version runs a very close second. The FMV cutscenes bug me to an extreme extent though.

The Ada cell that comes in the premium edition is very nice. Definitely better than the Leon one that came with the GC premium edition. :D I haven't watched the DVD yet but I will soon.
 
Wow, I thought the sound issue was just me. Boo, Capcom!

Anyhow, coming off a quickie-run that ended in Leon's doom - chainsaw guy got me from behind, I had no idea he was so close - my impressions echo everything that's already been said in the above few posts. Image quality is relatively poor and colours are noticeably duller on my non-progressive component connection, at least for the first area. I'm a bit disappointed, but it doesn't ruin the atmosphere much. Aiming was definitely more comfortable on the GC version, but once I adjust it'll be a shoot-possessed-villagers-in-the-face bonanza. We'll see who the cabron is, oh yes, we will.

Oh, and FMV cutscenes didn't bother me one bit.
 
Up through Chapter 3-2(?), some comments (I pretty much disagree with defensor, but I'd already played the GC one):

-Graphics are noticably worse. Not horrible, but anybody who tells you you're nitpicking is full of shit. 2 people over here (one's a non-gamer) who have never played either game but have watched me play both games commented on the graphics looking duller and more washed out as well as fuzzy, without any prodding from me. The fuzziness confuses me, since I playing on a component setup here, whereas I only have S-Video for my GC. However once you get out of the village, the colors do look MUCH better, just all the browns look poor on the PS2 I guess. Any graphical complaints in the Castle would be mostly nitpicking, but it's a definite issue in the village. I'm noticing a couple little things and here that are missing out of the GC version, mostly trees, but nothing that's a big deal. Also there's that weird afterimage/blur on the characters in the walkie/codec screen, not sure if that's intentional or not. If I wasn't skipping those anyway it'd probably bug me.
-Haven't noticed any of the slowdown there supposedly is. Had it once for a split second, and that was it, so far a non-issue.
-How the hell did they fuck up the sound?
-Load times don't really bother, although the load screen is realllllly lame.
-Controls are fine, after some playtime with the PS2 version I don't notice a whole lot of a difference either way honestly. I'm going to do the firing range range right now, that'll be the test for me ;)
-Gameplay's all the same, although I swear that the game gives you a LOT more money than before (other people seem to be making that same comment), but you get less items. I've played through the GC version several times, but when I hit the 3rd chapter, I was actually out of healing items for the first time ever (even on my first playthrough) simply due to my lack of finding them, but I had an obscene amount of ammo (something like 500+ rounds for the handgun). Makes it a little different for a new playthrough, but I'm not sure if it's intentional, or I'm just lucky/unlucky.
-Story scenes are a mixed bag for some reason. Some look great, can't tell they're FMV, but then others look horrible, super grainy and obviously FMV, not sure what's up with that.


Right now my score for GC is a 9.8, I'd give the PS2 one a 9.0, mainly for the (noticable) graphical downgrade. Don't get me wrong, it still looks great and I'm still having a blast, but it's not as good. Seperate Ways may or may not make it all worthwhile :p. If you have only one of the systems you're fine with whichever one you get, if you have both you're an idiot for waiting, I'd still reccommend buying the GC version, and renting the PS2 version for Seperate Ways, except for the few of us who are willing to spend the money and buy both ^^.
 
Oh I forgot to mention last night there were two awesome/funny moments I stumbled upon:

Before a villager was trying to do his zombie death grip on me, I aimed my shotgun right at his head and the split second before he grabbed me I blew his head off. Even with the head gone, the body still grabbed me and I had to shake off a headless corpse :lol
It triggered that shake off with the left analog stick screen and then had Leon kick air to where the head was suppose to be :lol :D

Another was when you have your first encounter with the villagers who have the parasites in them. I must have done enough damage with my knife and pistol to one because right after I shot the villager in the leg to stun make him fall to his knees, I had Leon kick the villager. But the roundhouse kick Leon did this time actually kicked the head off the villager :)
Didn't expect that to happen.
 
Decided to rent it from one of my local Blockbusters (they only had 1, just arrived) to see for myself what took a hit and what didn't in the transfer from GC, and also of course to check out the Ada sidestory. One of my favorite games, so playing through it again definitely won't be a chore.
 
If it hasn't been mentioned at all once here (sorry if it has) make sure you guys bust a few caps into the Lake when you get to it. It's priceless.
 
How the heck did Capcom screw up the sound? If anything they had a chance to use higher quality sound files because of being on DVD, what did they do, recompress the already low sound files of the GC?
 
Well...if you've never played the GC rev(like me), you'll never notice any sound problems. It all sounds just fine to me. :P
 
Could someone who has both versions answer me this.

Which looks better: PS2 version proper fullscreen or GC verison zoomed to fullscreen?

Because the black borders really bothered me on the GC version and I zoomed it to full screen (thus reducing quality).

If the PS2 version looks better FULL SCREEN then I'd still consider getting it.

Also does the PS2 version have progressive scan?
