The Official Resident Evil 4 (biohazard 4/PS2) Thread!

Yeah, we all spent 40-50 dollars on a game so we could scare people away from it. Good job Captain Logic. Most of us just think it's not quite as good as the GC version. If you don't have a GC, by all means buy it, you'll be very pleased, but if you have both systems I'd still recommend the GC version. You seem to have a hard time understanding that people who OWN both versions might honestly believe the PS2 version is not as good, and owning both makes us fairly impartial really. People who haven't played the PS2 version have no room to talk, but it looks like most of us (in this thread at least) bought both. If I wasn't a whore for Premium Editions, I'd would've waited and pick this up cheap.

Go over this thread again. I just read the whole thing and the amount of nitpicking is astounding. So yeah I would say those of you spending 40 to 50 dollars on this game are scaring potential owners away. Seems like this thread isn't the official RE4 PS2 thread at all but "RE4 PS2 VS GC THE FINAL BATTLE" thread.

Again, people are saying IT IS STILL A VERY GOOD GAME, but just not quite as good as the GC version. I think most people can tell the difference between the two, and most GAF users are probably familiar with all this anyway :lol . For the record, I'd give the GC version a 9.8, and right now the PS2 version a 9.0 or so, but I haven't gotten to Seperate Ways yet. Honestly, you can't have a thread like this where a major title got ported to another system and not have comparisons like this. And to be fair, most of the comparisons regardless of whether or not they're nitpicking have been accurate. I mean, fuck, I told my friend who doesn't have a GC to go buy it NOW and he did. I <3 RE, I don't intend to push anyone away, I'm just mostly baffled at the people who had a GC who didn't pick this up. Just to be clear:

THE PLAYSTATION 2 VERSION IS AN EXCELLENT TITLE. SOME USERS MAY FEEL THAT THE GC VERSION IS VERY SLIGHTLY BETTER AND MIGHT RECOMMEND IT, BUT EITHER VERSION IS STILL EXCELLENT PURCHASE TO GUARANTEE MANY HAPPY TIMES.

Regardless of the nitpicking, this game will sell more copies on the PS2 in it's first few monts of release than it did overall on the GC, and that's good news for Capcom.

Last I checked, the game is over ten months old and all the surprises have been mostly said already. The comparison, and Separate Ways are all that's left to talk about.

So.. Ashley doesn't jiggle on PS2? :(
... hugs my GC ver. ;)

Seriously, thinking of walking out and getting a PS2 copy right now..

I just played the PS2 version for like 3 hours. Some comments:

- The gameplay is intact. Rock solid framerate just like the GC version, lots of villagers attack you at the same time and the framerate holds up perfectly.

- Graphically its remarkably similar to the GC version. In fact, If I didn't know I was playing the PS2 version I wouldn't see the difference. The villagers models are lower-res and the amount of fog was decreased, also, the jaggies are in full force here (the GC had jaggies too soo its not a big deal). Is still one of the best looking console games this generation wheter it is on GC or PS2.

- The controls are surprisingly great. Honestly I couldn't figure out how the hell would Capcom handle the controls cuz the game was specifically created for the GC controller (or at least felt that way) but the PS2 controls are great. They hold up on their own greatly against the GC ones. Obviously the GC controls are better but by a slight margin.

That is all. People who don't have a GC and want to play the PS2 version just don't hesitate and go out and get it. Don't listed to the haters this version is just as amazing as the GC one.

You seem to have a hard time understanding that people who OWN both versions might honestly believe the PS2 version is not as good, and owning both makes us fairly impartial really.

i have both, i beat the GC version long ago, beat assignment ada, got all the weapons, played the crap out of mercenaries, and to be honest you can't go wrong with either version. if you put a gun to my head and asked, as an overall package which would you rather own, i will say the playstation 2 version. it is essentially a 97% accurate port with enough little extras to push it over the top.

i went back and played a little of the GC version (to see if people were right about their graphical observations), and it is true that the GC version is pretty clearly graphically superior. but you can't tell unless you play the games side by side or within a few hours of each other. the sound is also HIGHLY superior in the GC version, and for some reason i like the GC controller better than the ps2 controller for this game. it's not that the ps2 controller is unresponsive, but i just like the GC controller better.

But they had to re-release CV to make it a non-crap ending!

Actually, if you play Ada's game and see her ending, it kinda jives with Leon's since RE4 is effectively two stories in one. Don't give up hope! :lol

It's interesting to note that Separate Ways, which was actually coded on the PS2, is more polished than the main game, soundwise and graphically, too.

Haha, so I wasn't going crazy. I just started Seperate Ways and it really does seem that the graphics are a touch better. Still missing trees and shit, but it just seems more "atmospheric".

Oh, anyway, impressions after finishing the main game. I haven't played the GC version.

-Graphics look great for a PS2 game. Gotta be on the top 5 of best looking games on the system. Environmental texture work stood out as being great.

-The cutscenes are VERY VERY obviously fmv. I knew about it ahead of time, but the artifacting and graininess stand out all the same. Man, all of that was realtime on the gamecube? Pretty amazing.

-Controls are great for aiming and movement and all that, though I think overall it could've been a little better implemented. A weapon cycle or grenade button or a quick access map would've kept me out of the start button menu so damn much (along with the loading that goes with it).

-Gameplay's fun, but we all know that. Rocket launcher really shouldn't be in there at all...I reloaded the game and took on a boss normally after one-shotting him with a rocket.

-Did I mention the horrible, anticlimactic ending? Yes? Well it sucks.

What's up with the slowdown the reviewers mentioned? I haven't hit any at all. The game graphically looks much better when you get to 2-1, I guess all the browns in the village make it seem worse. Only other time I noticed a significant difference graphically was in the fire room where you
fight the two gigantes
which actually looked really bad, but still no slowdown. I'm almost at the end (haven't had much time to play), but once you get out of the village the graphical differences become much much less noticable. Still there, but you'd only know it if you'd played both versions. I'm more impressed with the graphics, but less impressed with the aiming now :(. I did all of the shooting range galleries in the GC version about a month ago with barely any problems, only didn't get a prize maybe a couple of times, but it seemed much more difficult on the PS2 version, took me two or three times as long to do it on PS2. Anybody else notice that? The game does seem a little harder. Everyone seems to be complaining about lack of ammo though, while I can't seem to get ANY healing item drops. But I got to 4-1 with:

Blacktail completely maxed out with 525 rounds
Striker maxed out as much as currently possible with 150 rounds
Semi-auto rifle maxed out as much as currently possible with 64 rounds
TMP completely maxed out with 450 rounds
18 magnum rounds
5 full healing items
5 grenades
84,000 pesetas

I've gone through the GC version about 4 times, I never remember having anywhere near that insane amount of ammo. Isn't the last part of the game supposedly easier or harder depending on what you have in your inventory when you get there?

And yes, Mercenaries kicks ASS.

Man, all of that was realtime on the gamecube? Pretty amazing.

Yeah, the graphics in the cut-scenes are insane, they have this "CG"-look to them sometimes. I've seen the light now...RE4 on Gamecube is definitely the best looking game released this gen. :P

don't forget to play mercenaries folks, best mini game ever :D

This seems as good a place as any so I'll ask: What are some people's high scores in Mercenaries? And on what level, with which character did you get it? Just want to have something to shoot for as I lack motivation now that I've unlocked everything.

Well, I managed to beat SW in 45 minutes. I was aiming for 40. =(

I think if I worked a bit quicker in certain areas, then I can achieve 40.

This game is awesome, i'm about 5 hours and i'm impressed! the screenshots left me a bit cold, but this game looks great in motion. it's awesome that they could pull this off on the PS2.

Man, I already can't wait for RE5 - the game works really well in the direction they're taking it, they just NEED to add a weapon switch button for god's sake.

And strafing. Capcom needs to kill the tank controls good.

After playing every NTSC version of RE in existense so far, I still can't figure out how they'd get rid of the tank controls. :lol

Holy crap.

The BB is free, which counts for a lot in the PS2 version IMO.

Heh, I had enough money to buy the BB before getting it in the game. I ended up selling them both and getting a Killer 7, and again I had enough money to upgrade that sunnavabitch to the max. I pretty much neglected upgrading the handguns and the rifles, tho.

So I just reached the first of the 'shooting gallery' stages, and I need a reminder as to what they reward? I finished them all in the GC game, but can't remember what they or the bottlecaps were actually good for. I'd rather not go through them again, was it just bonus pesetas?

You know, it really really sucks that you have to beat the game on professional to get the PRL. I have to go through the game AGAIN now, Christ.

Yeah no shit. This does not bode well for the games sales on the PS2.

I hope no one who was considering purchasing the game is put off by all the negativity in this thread.

As a person who is anal about having the best graphical version, and who has never played RE4, I am one such person who has decided not to buy the PS2 version because of the impressions in this thread. Content, shmontent. To me, Ada extras and whatnot are not enough to overcome so many dissapointing graphical downgrades from the GC to the PS2. Gimmie the better looking version any day of the week.

Just so you know, Seperate Ways is awesome though. I agree with your choice, but rent or borrow the PS2 version if you can just to play it.

The controls are shit (giant dead zone + overly sensitive once the thumbstick is halfway to the edge and you actually start moving). This plus the 'freezing' loads before and after most cutscenes actually bothers me a lot more than the graphics.

This is a perfectly reasonable mindset, actually.

Love your avatar CVX. Better yet, you should get one where she makes their head explode with that kick. Did you make that yourself, or get it somewhere?

Also, I started Professional last night, I don't remember getting owned this bad before on Pro. Also, Leon's new outfit is HILARIOUS, seriously.

isamu is a moron, he doesn't even own a Gamecube, it's not like he has a choice. Besides, I'm pretty sure he doesn't own a single console this gen.

The controls are shit

If you had complete control like any other 3rd or FPS you wouldn't have those "freak out get your baring moments" that make resident evil what it is.

Resident Evil's secret is bad/unconventinal controls

I just completed the game last night and tried abit of Separate Ways. I like how Ada said the same line and dropped a rocket launcher for you like in Resident Evil 2 for the final battle. The music track they played when you were battling Krauser was my favorite.

During the credits for the Playstation 2 edition, it's interesting to point out that even though Shinji Mikami directed the Gamecube version and didn't direct this one, he is listed as a designer for the PS2 edition. Also for the Playstation 2 edition credits, they list Kenji Inafume as the executive producer instead of Hiroyuki Kobayashi from the Gamecube version.

Are there two different PS2 games out there? A friend of mine told me about
when he first encoutnered that Rasputin looking dude, that some chick crashed through a window and saed Leon's ass. In my game he just lets you go afte realizing you're infected.

Thanks. Matlock made it off an IGN vid. :)

I'm talking about in general though.

Go back into the previous room to trigger the scene.
