The Official Resident Evil 4 (biohazard 4/PS2) Thread!

Any owners of the Asian version? Looking at you Maskrider and CVX. Would like details on what's in that version. Like is there an easy mode? How is the torch and book? Do all Asian versions come in that bundle or are there standalone game-only ones too?

Soon...

Is there a limited edition of the PAL GC version of RE4? I plan on dumping the US GC version and getting the UK PAL GC one.

I finally finished the PS2 version last night, it turned out to be almost as good as the Cube version in the long run, but I could have easily done without buying it, since I still have the Cube game. I sort of bought into the hype for the extras, which IMO aren't really anything special. Still the instant classic it always will be, though.
I beat Separate Ways and Assignment Ada earlier today, and yeah, neat little additions but SW alone doesn't warrant another purchase. How many goddamn times did they have to throw
Krauser
at us?
The battle in Leon's campaign was extremely well done, but the encounter at the end of Assignment Ada felt like an afterthought on the designers' part. I actually groaned when he appeared - and come on, fighting on a straight path? Snore. At least there was some variation to the SW battle. I know AA's just a bonus mission, but still. Let her fight one of Salvador's guardians, whichever one of the bastards that chases you down in Leon's campaign.

:lol If you think it's scary now, just wait a little longer until you get to the next-to-last "boss". Freaked me out in the Cube version.
Which boss? I'm guessing you're not counting
Krauser
as one. If you're talking about
the cage monster, then yeah, it was intense. That was probably my favorite fight, having to find the switches to proceed to the next compartment while dodging the bastard's attacks was a rush.

I really got creeped out in
the lab with the regenerators
, though, the atmosphere was absolutely chilling and
the regenarators' "breathing", or whatever bodily function of theirs makes that sound,
was pretty unsettling. I thoroughly enjoyed blowing those abominations up.

So now that I'm done with the story-based elements, does anyone have tips for success in Mercenaries mode? Highest I've scored is a lousy 2 stars with Leon in the Granado village. I have trouble keeping up streaks, the most I've killed in a row is either 7 or 8. Maybe I waste too much time running about trying to maintain position. Help!

I stopped playing after 5 hours, i just couldnt get really into it this time. I think i'm going back to playing the GC version, theres something probably subtle, just different about the PS2 version. I can't put my hand on it but the game just "feels" different.

Maybe its.........the controller?

Just beat the game! :D The clock stopped at 16 hours (on normal).

This is indeed a GOTY candidate. This game was a true blast from start to finish. I dont think I've played a game this intense before. Now I know why GAF was going crazy on this game. It's that goood!

I really, really loved the boss fights in RE4. They are in fact on par with MGS3. I'm amazed how Capcom has put so much effort in to this game. I mean you can play it in 100 different ways. Right now I'm amped on this game. I want to make love to Ada :D I want to talk more about the game but I dont like writing so much... plus it feels like everyone already knew this game was awesome.

Next up Separate ways. Btw, when can you purchase the PRL 412 with Leon?

When you beat the game on Professional. Which is fucked up. It's awesome, but I'll never play through the PS2 version again, negating any use I would have gotten out of it.

is professional hard? i thought normal was perfect. pretty tough at timesbut not too hard overall.

but man did i love the boss' or what! fucking brilliant, every one of them.

Professional is pretty fucking hard. More or less anything will kill you in two hits. Even at the end with maxed out health and the tactical vest, any two hits would kill me. If you're going to do it, I'd suggest using the 2nd outifts - the gangster outfit acts as a tactical vest, and Ashley can't be hurt in her armor, and enemies will try to pick her up and fail, so she actually works great as bait. I did it that way and still had problems at points, I'd imagine it'd be a lot harder not being able to use her as bait.

i'm listening to the soundtrack right now. aweosme stuff!

fuck i really dug the 2 gigante fight. that was probably the coolest fight ever.
you drain one of them in lava, how cool isnt that :D

whats your favourite boss fights in the game?

I still like Del Lago the best. Just such a cool idea, and unlike any boss fight I've ever played in a game before.

That alien/predator thing (where the N2 tanks are) was also awesome. Although I swear it took longer than 4 minutes for that door to open.

yeah the el lago fight was was great too. nice tribute to the jaws :)

the last fight was very neat as well. hell every fight was great but those that i have mentioned was very special.

one thing though, wasnt wesker suppose to be in the game? o_O

ok I am inside castle now. I cleared the Fire bomb catapult part, should I sell the sniper rifle and buy the mine gun or the new shot gun?

I suggest you buy the New Shotgun, buy the New Rifle/New Scope, and buy the Red 9 if you dont have it already.

Huh? There is no tactical vest in pro mode and I don't think the special outfits have the damage reduction of the tactical vest.

The vest was actually in the US GC Pro mode, but didn't do anything, so Capcom removed it from the PAL GC and PS2 versions.

Don't forget that Leon's not the only one in this story. ;)
oh okay i get it :D for a second there i actually thought i'd miss 1/3 of the story hehe.

ada is damn hot though. i'm not afraid to admit that girls in games can be hot. ada sure is one of them. i like how capcom made her look super sexy when she gets
off the boat after taking leon with her to the island. i dunno if you guts remember this moment but i sure do :D

I think the guy was talking about the PS2 version, he mentioned the gangster and knight outfits...

Yes, exactly. I just decided to mention the specifics of the vest in case anyone else was wondering where it went in Pro mode.

I thought the alternate outifts acted as tactical vests? I could be wrong, but I thought in the GC version if you were wearing the alternate outfit, when you got to it, the Tactical vest was crossed out in the shop, like you already had it. Well that sucks then.

Well, in normal mode, the RPD uniform in the GC one acted as an armor and also does so in the normal PS2 one. But in Pro, it doesn't work.

I never actually tried Pro on the GC. :lol And I'm afraid to since there's no Ashley armor.

That doesn't explain how he was playing with vest on pro mode on the PS2 version.

Just played through Ada's first two chapters. And man, there is actually a story here! I first thought it would be like SH2 Restless Dreams, but this is just awesome.

I had the opportunity to revisit RE4 GC at a friend's house and wow, the difference in graphics is night and day. The lighting makes a huge difference. I was at the rocky blue area just before the lab where the cultists imprison Ashley and blew up one of those carts full of explosive barrels. The way the flames illuminated everything in their path was a sight to behold - probably the nicest display of lighting effects I've seen this generation. Another thing I liked was the reduced load times, especially those for bringing up the inventory screen and going back to the game. The lag in bringing up and cancelling that screen in the PS2 version is only a second or two longer, but it was enough of an interruption to annoy me during hectic encounters. What else? The GC's higher enemy detail and poly counts were noticeable, but they didn't stand out as much as the lighting, nor did the better audio. Interestingly enough, I've grown so accustomed to the PS2 controller that I prefer using it over the GC pad now. It actually took some time to get used to the GC layout and sensitivity again.

I feel bad for anyone who thought Separate Ways and a few new costumes would be worth the extra $40. The PS2 port remains an impressive feat and a fantastic source of entertainment, but the true RE4 experience is on the GC.

Switching to gameplay discussion, I really wish there was a money or weapon code unlocked after you beat the main campaign. I don't care to spend time scrounging up the million pesatas required for the Chicago typewriter. I don't even care to unlock the P.R.L., at this point I just want to blast infested giblet-heads to kingdom come with powerful weaponry. Is that too much to ask?

Zzz...

The differences are hardly game-breaking. It's like playing a PC game on lower settings than the highest possible - something I'm sure a lot of us do without bitching. I'm personally just happy that I can finally retire my GC copy now.

how is this game sell ing on sps2, or is offical tha ll gc to ps2 ports will bomb, is mikami's curse that strong. :lol :lol

W've only gotten the NPD numbers, and the next numbers we see will be from Japanese release.

Finished Separate Ways today. Everything is so much more clearer on the Ada front now. Still some ?s though.
Did she really hand the serum over to Wesker? What is this organization? Was it Umbrella? Maybe I missed some of the plot. The Saddler fight with Ada was very cool. Not as impressive as Leons fight against him but very cool.
It's too bad you dont have a boss fight selector in RE4 as in MGS2 and MGS3, that'd be great, cause I'd love to show some of the boss' to some friends of mine. I know they would be impressed :D

OK, I'm getting very bored with this game. I'm about about 4hr:30min playtime and I just finished
the whole barracade yourself in the house scenario before you have the two left and right branch choice in the village
.

Maybe it gets better once you get out of the village, but at this point, while the mechanics are still fun to play the novelty has worn off a bit and shooting endlessly at the same villagers over and over again with the occasional El Gigante thrown in is getting pretty damn repetitive. Not living up to the GOTY talk for me at this point.
