Don't know if this has been posted yet anywhere but Australia gets a world exclusive pre order bonus!

Noticed this on the JB website today, day 1 :D

That is some serious luck for Australians buying the game at that store! It seems to be pretty limited so will problably become really rare in the future.

As for the game I am definetly going to buy it and play through all those classics.

I finished Ristar on virtual console but can't remember listening to that ending! I already loved the rest of game's soundtrack but that ending track is really catchy. About time Ristar got some attention as it's one of my favorite mega drive games.

It's kind of odd that no other country gets it as a pre order bonus since it's limited to at least 3000 as SEGA UK has one numbered 2831. :P

QUICK! I need to know!
is that vinyl record region locked?

Yes, but if you have the boot disc for your record player you can play it as long as you don't install any 3.6 or later system update for it. ;)

This is probably the best place to ask, so...how long are the RPGs in this collection? Primarily the hour length of the Phantasy Star games?

FINALLY pre-ordered this 2 days ago. Such a great value for only 30! I've sold my past Genesis comps but this one is staying in my collection permanently.

And could you couple Sonic 3k together in the other comps? If so, then there's your answer to coupling Sonic 2/3 with Knuckles.

30 in the US.

It's right in the OP man :lol

i was dazzled by the huge list of games. blinded by the retro goodness.
I should correct myself as I had it at 20 on my original quote. I put down 20, knew it was 30. Bah :lol

And this collections shits on all the VC/XBLA releases necks with that awesome price.

PS 1 is 20-30 hours, IIRC. PSII is double that. PS3 is fairly short - 15-20 hours tops for a playthrough. Not sure on the last one.

Shining in the Darkness and the two Shining Force games are ~30 hours each.

Has there been any word what it will take to unlock the games? I know they mentioned getting a specific score in Super Thunder Blade to unlock Space Harrier but I haven't read about the others.

i have the carts for every single one of these games, but i still think i'm going to bite for convenience... and for phantasy star 1, so i don't have to ever hook up my master system again. :lol still makes me wish for some of the japanese sega ages comps to be localized, i understand how much more sense this makes financially for sega.

Really disappointed, but not surprised, at the lack of online co-op.

For singleplayer, Dynamite Headdy and Phantasy Star IV have me interested. Maybe Sonic 1-3/Knuckles.

For co-op, Golden Axe and Street of Rage series is where it's at. They're at least worth playing in local co-op (online ;_;).

I am NOT buying it if it doesn't allow customizable controls, though. A bunch of XBLA games are guilty of this, and completely ruin the controls since my Hori 360 stick buttons are set up differently from the gamepad.

I'd be more enthused about this if I didn't already have all the games I'd want on the VC (Beyond Oasis, Phantasy Star 2/4, Shining games, Ristar, Dynamite Headdy, Shinobi 3, SOR2-3, Sonic 2, etc). As is, only Phantasy Star and Golden Axe Warrior really stand out for me, and I'll inevitably be able to pick them up on VC for $5 each. :/

Important Questions:

1- Can I play Sonic3 and Knuckles in there?

2- Are all the games unlocked from the get go?

3- Is the emulation good? (aka I can play without filters AND in the proper screen ratio)

.

thanks alot for you answers. The VC sucks so much that I am really tempted to buy this here.

1. Unknown as of now. :/
2. All Genesis games are, SMS/AC games need to be unlocked
3. yes and yes! The window is boxed obviously, but the emulation uses linedoubling for 720p output with gorgeous chunky pixels.

also, don't hate on VC. It's premium priced, but you really get what you pay for (PERFECT emulation, original res, 480p output, save state, FM options in SMS, locked framerates plus other improvements in N64, Classic Controller, etc).

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I wanted to buy this for Phantasy Star 2 and Golden Axe Warrior. Now I will need to play many games I don't care about. Sega doesn't want my money or sump.

And yeah well, you know I love to VC itself. The idea is great but its handled SO BADLY by Nintendo. It's like best platform ever AND the worse handled ever at the same time. Seriously, life is sad for me.

Well, PS2 should be ready immediately. I dunno what exactly you need to do to unlock GAW, probably play a certain amount of the Genesis Golden Axes (ugh).

And yeah, my only real complaint with the VC is Nintendo's ass scheduling.

Something tells me that the method to unlock Golden Axe Warrior (or any of the other games, for that matter) will not be very difficult at all.

Yeah, I doubt it's Sonic Team style retarded (ugh Ristar!). Probably something like play GA1-3 each once or something.

The only reason I have not purchased/pre-ordered this yet is because I, like everybody else, am still waiting for the S3&K confirmation.

That's the deal breaker for me. I can live without the compilation, as I do most of my Genesis gaming on my Genesis (yes, still!), and I own every game contained within the compilation, except for the arcade games(Though, to be able to have arcade-perfect Shinobi and Space Harrier may do it for me).

Seriously, listen to the Retronuats episode linked in the OP. It answers many questions posted. Unlocks are going to be very easy (complete one level of a game, etc). Awesome OP, great thread. Can't wait for some retro love on my new TV.

Has Sonic & Knuckles released on VC yet? And does it "connect" to Sonic 3? I've been holding off on buying Sonic 3 because of that. :/

It's been rated since...uh, last February. But is has not been released yet.

I'm guessing because Sega still has not figured out how to get it to 'lock on' to other games.

FUUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!1

Is this online only or can i go in store and get it? Any1 know?

JB has all my SEGA moneyyy...

The HOTD bundle is sexxx too... <3 SEGA Australia.

I Really hope the emulation quality is good in this set, as that's the one thing Sega has not been able to accomplish with any genesis collection they put out. Digital eclipse couldn't get it right, and I've heard nothing but bad things about backbone.

Please someone tell me it's gonna be alright............

Backbone are Digital Eclipse, DE is just a division of Backbone Entertainment (Not sure if they still use the DE name though)

Expect the worst...

The quality of the emulation should be identical to the XBLA Mega Drive games that have already been released. Maybe even improved since then, it definitely shouldn't be worse (unless something goes horribly wrong with the PS3 port of the emulator, which could happen I suppose).

Some people complain about the Digital Eclipse/Backbone emulation, but as a huge fan of the original Mega Drive Sonic games and Streets of Rage 2 I had absolutely no problems with the emulation for the XBLA versions. Graphics and sound were exactly as I remembered, much better than the versions found in the Dreamcast Sega Smash Pack Volume 1, Sonic Mega Collection(+) or Sonic Gems collection.

As long as all the titles get the same treatment as those titles already on XBLA like online play (Sonic multiplayer and SOR/GA co-op) and proper 60hz versions of the titles for PAL gamers, then everything will be great. If Streets of Rage 1 and 3 are missing online co-op and run at crappy 50hz then I will be very upset.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the ultimate decider for whether or not I buy this, even though I already own S1,S2 and SOR2 on XBLA. I like the idea of trying to get into the original Phantasy Star games too, but JRPGs are tough for me to like.

I could notice a difference in sound between XBLA SoR2 and the original. To be honest, I've yet to play a modern Genesis re-release that got the sound perfect, and I have no idea why that is.

Really? I'd love to see/hear a side by side comparison of the original versions sound against the XBLA version.

As for online play, it works. It already works!!! Why remove it now? Is it too much work to do what they did for the arcade versions for each title in this collection that has a 2-player mode? Really?

I wonder what the interface will be like, will we get the full title screens and options menus for each title of will it jump straight into the gameplay like the Live Arcade games. I hope we get full title screens.

No, it doesn't. Did you ever try joining another player's game in SoR2 on Live? The input lag kills the experience and makes the harder difficulties impossible.

Backbone has a poor reputation for a reason. You've seen all of those screenshots with the smudge filter, right?
