The Official Sonic's Megadrive/Genesis Ultimate Collection thread

I forget what I saw in the Phantasy Star games. This shit did not age well at all...and without a paper or in-game manual, there's absolutely no way to tell what any spells or items in the game do. Great attention to detail, Backbone.

...33mb? What the hell is in this thing?

I'm so fucking rusty. I picked up this tonight, have been playing Sonic 1. Stopped. Now I'm playing Streets of Rage 1 and 2. I got my ass kicked in later round in both, but in the first one I keep accidently pressing special and wasting in. I'm hitting up SOR 2 now, and thought it was SO easy, kicking ass in the first 3 stages, and then BAM. No more later on. Think I fucked up in Stage 5 or so. It's tough taking on 5 or 6 on one and getting my ass kicked by that fire breathing boss. Mother fucker. I was drinking vodka though and lost some comeback ability after I was draining some. :lol

I was actually enjoying Streets of Rage 3 for awhile. I guess it's mostly because Zan is a freaking beast and I know how to easily destroy most of the bosses(SoR3 has the easiest of the series, they all have extremely easy to exploit patterns).

However by the time I reached the 6th boss despite my five lives and two continues I could not get past him?
Why?

Well for one he's the hardest boss in the game. SoR2 fans familiar with Jet will recognize these dudes immediately. Problem is these dudes are Jet on well...jet. Their reaction time is insane and they have a crapload more invincibility frames. I've beaten these guys without dying once and that was on the JP version with Axel(hardest difficulty though, gotta respect that right?)

Course like everything else SoR3 makes it even worse by giving this dude FOUR HEALTH BARS. Okay what the fuck. This is on normal difficulty for crying out loud. To put this into perspective there is not a single enemy in Bare Knuckle 3 that has four bars, even on the hardest setting.

Couple that with everyone in SoR3 doing far more damage(which actually scales with difficulty, so on the hardest setting you could lose like a 5th of your health from a single punch) and before long I quit. I can 1CC BK3 on the hardest difficulty on a regular basis(heck I even nearly one-lifed it with Blaze...guess who I lost that one life to?) but I can't even complete SoR3 normal. Shit just doesn't work.

On the bright side I don't believe I ever bought a copy of SoR3 new. Oh sure I got one over a year ago and sold it on ebay for about triple what I paid but otherwise...yeah.

RECRUITED MIEU OH YEAH! Mieu rules. I should have made a PSU character named Mieu Musashi. I bet if I did I'd still be playing that piece of crap.

Also I just arrived at the Biomonster Facility in PS2(third dungeon I guess). Of course I forget that I'm supposed to take the teleporter 1/3rd of the way through the dungeon to find the dynamite so I can take out the door 3/4ths of the way through. Oops? Oh well at least I got a lot of exp and cash.

Played some Phantasy Star 1 as well. I like how enemies seem to level up with you. The flies take 1 HP off when you're level 1 but then at level 2 they tend to take off 2 HP, and so on and so forth. Actually I don't like it at all(it's pretty flipping idiotic)

First boss of Comix Zone is no problemo. Just jump in with a kick, move back to avoid his claws, and then do another jump kick. You'll notice he goes for his fire breathing animation but it never completes since you just cut him off with another jumpkick.

EDIT: Back to SOR3. I just noticed that the punk-rock girlz have this insane slap move that can pretty much take you out if you don't do a special. Seriously Sega of America I know this was about 15 years ago but please stop screwing up.

Does anyone know if its possible to use the blu-ray remote as a second controller to unlock Phantasy Star? I know with the PS2's dvd remote could use it as a crappy but functional controller so I'm kinda thinking it'll be the same deal with this maybe?

you can reassign the controller to Tails, hit him once, then switch back. you may have to eat a hit with Sonic, but you could switch back in time to get rings back.

watching my girlfriend play flicky to unlock fantasy zone... :lol man flicky is such a piece of shit.

Do not hate the Flickys!!

Even with all of the problems, I just picked this up. It's Shinobi time!

Oh, and let me just get this out: Altered Beast rules! I love that game.

Just picked this up. Trophies was actually a selling point for me in this game. Not because it simply has them, but the way they are implemented. Having us get a taste of each game was a great way to implement it. After I'm done getting the trophies I would have essentially tried every game in the compilation and will be ready to give the ones that hooked me a more serious try. I'm glad because usually when I buy compilations I end up not giving many of the titles an honest effort. I think I will enjoy this compilation more because of the way trophies are implemented.

The whining on Streets of Rage 3 has to stop. I didn't care that Zan is a half cyborg, didn't care that the colours were changed, and didn't care that the giant flamboyant dude was in it when I was a kid. Still was an awesome game to play.

Outside of the soundtrack (IMO), it's clearly superior to SoR2... but everything just came together so damn perfectly in SoR2.

I don't know, I loved Streets of Rage 3's music. Especially these:

Certainly "harder", yeah, but man Yuzo pushed that bloody thing to its limit.

Motohiro Kawashima was responsible for almost all of the music in SOR3 that was any good (including at least 2 of those that you posted, not sure on the others). Yuzo was slacking on that one.

And the game is really pretty boring. The gameplay was improved, but almost everything else took a major hit. The middle 3 stages are just zzzzz.....

Those are far from being the only changes (except Zan is a half-cyborg in both SOR3 and BK3). The game was made a lot harder and the power meter system was changed. The story was altered significantly a left a lot of plotholes.

The change of clothes colours doesn't bother me as much as the reason they did it ("to make the characters more gender-neutral").

i remember the horribly disturbing boxart, but i never played the game during the time of the genesis. i know i'd personally group it on about the same level of the genesis alex kidd.

The thing about Flicky that you have to understand is....well, it's old. Like, 1984 old. It predates Super Mario Bros. Think about that for a second.

For a game made in 1984, I think it's pretty stellar. It's still very playable today and still fun. That is, if you like old arcade-styled games where the object is simply to rack up the highest score possible.

For the record, here are some other games that were released around the same time: Marble Madness, Bomb Jack, Punch-Out!!(the original!), 1942, Vulgus(the first Capcom game EVER), Kung-Fu Master, and Lode Runner.

Flicky is more fun than any of them, IMO.

You just have to have an appreciation for that kind of older game.

Flicky was one of the games I genuinely did not enjoy playing, and that was getting as far as the trophy requirement. I can't even imagine playing anything beyond that.

I tend to think of games in relation to their release year and judge the game according to what I would expect at that time. I thought Flicky was a fun game.

I do loves me some Lode Runner, though

There was a story in Streets of Rage 3? I thought I was just punching dudes and beating Mr. X. That's all I needed to know at the time.

Though at the time I had no idea about the multiple endings, but I'm sure I got through the good and bad endings on accident.

Ya know, I disagree. I've tried playing them on the GBA, but now that I've actually got this down to play on a console I find that it still retains tons of it's charms. You also have to keep in mind that this is basically one of the first JRPG's made.... ever. A lot of uncharted territory was out there for the genre when this came out in '87(iirc) also if a good way to find out what something does is to... well just freakin' buy it and use it and see what it does. Like some items, like flash I just have to assume illuminate caves. Not because I've tried it out but because well... that's what flash always does.

Anyone I'm still playing #1 but that site is an excellent recourse for anything you could ever get stuck on :D

Edit: to those still trying to unlock PS1 you don't actually have to hit the boss with tails. All I did was select a profile with my GH controller and didn't even touch it after words:lol

Shipping tracker says it's "out for delivery". And my in-laws are due to crash here for ten days starting today. Temptation is to plug in headphones and do the Phantasy Star series in marathon to escape.

I played around with this for a bit last night... overall I'm glad I have it but the collection does have a few inelegant qualities. Navigating the menus, in-game and out-of-game, is somewhat confusing. It's a conceptually cool (this robo-virtual Genesis cart machine), but needed some refinement in knowing what I'm selecting and what menu choices I'm migrating to. The first time I went to customize some controls I got all screwed up.

And I'm sorry, but when you're making a collection like this, something you're hoping the hardcore who grew up with these games will embrace and something the casuals will snag for novelty, value, or whatever, please gives us the options we demand. Those frame borders sound like decent idea in some meeting, I'm sure, but they are incredibly disconcerting to play with. When I was playing Comix Zone I was disturbed to see they attempted to continue the game's comic panel look. Why the hell did anyone think that was a good idea? Particularly in a game where the hero and the visual hook is that he's jumping between those panels. Come on... this is not a huge leap to make. And Sonic 2, which I feel is one of the most precisely artistic, vibrant games of the genesis, is marred by this "danger zone" strip along the edges. It doesn't even make sense and adds a gratuitous visual cacophony that my eyes get stressed and confused by.

Backbone, please play your stuff more extensively before you ship it off to Sega. No one who's legitimately playing these games for more than 5 minutes at a time wants that crap. It's a fleeting peice of art that's cute for 3 seconds and then goes on to impact negatively oh, so much.

Maybe this is something that can be patched. I hope so.
