The Official Thread of Catan

Help me, I can`t stop playing Catan! I played 6 straight games last night after dinner. I can`t stop!!

I haven`t hopped online yet, but I`ve been playing the single player, and I`m finding the moderate AI to be a BIT easy. I`m going to try fighting the Hard AI tonight.
You LIKE playing against the AI? Woah. Seriously, playing against some chatty people is half the fun of the experience. The other half is completely screwing them over by blocking their roads and stealing their cards, then vowing revenge when they do the same to you. Unless there's someone who doesn't talk, then it's monkey pile time.

Even if they didn't quit I'd be making them an avoided player so I don't get matched with them again. However I do wish they'd identify and fix crap like this quicker so it doesn't devolve into people doing this in every game. (Reminds me of SFII players that'd select Honda and just do the hundred hand slap and no other moves.)

When you do it in single-player, you're spending your own time. When you're doing that kind of thing in a multiplayer ranked game, you're sapping other peoples' enjoyment. Just as if you sat there and did that to someone playing the regular board game. You can't expect someone not to get annoyed while you dick around with the pieces. If achievement-whoring means that much to someone then they can withstand the bad feedback I give 'em.

Yeah I wish they'd fix it sooner as well of course. Avoided yes but I was just talking about reporting because MS might see it as modding a console instead of just being an asshat. Although I can't really say we need anymore asshats on live :lol What was up with SFII?

Yeah, true about the SP. At least its not something that they can do all the way through the game though. I think feedback has turned into something thats worthless though, because of games like PGR3 and Worms. I can't tell you how much "Quit Early" I have from worms disconnecting me. It would have made me quit the game if rep meant anything but because of the rate at which people give it for stuff like that, everyone knows it means little. Its a connundrum. They should show a persons rep according to a list of like 200 known cool people. People who know what the greatest movie ever is, without any aide. Do you know? You could be on the list. Whos on that list is a matter of grave importance. Are you on the list?

Yes.

It's their fault their sore losers, or don't want to face a challenge.

People who only play because everything is going their way, are losers.

Sorry, not buying it. Maybe in some game that wasn't mired in randomness you'd have a point, but Catan can quickly devolve to a point that's just not enjoyable. The ****ing dice deck should have been mandatory.

The dice deck makes it so that the best placement makes the win. The only luck is being either first or fourth, if you're second or third you're in a pretty bad way with the dice deck. Sure, it sucks every now and then to have 6 or 8 be a poor choice but its much better than "oh shit i'm third, game over" at the very beginning.

I'll spare you guys two paragraphs of rants, but I just have to say this game ****ing sucks when you're playing with absolute idiots in ranked.

Usually it's fun beating people who don't know how to play, but when two quit, jesus christ. The other game, I swear at least two of the guys were playing in the same room and/or on voice chat.

Whatever happened to that league? I've seen Grifter on a couple times, but that's about it.

Even if my server is spotty for the moment (being moved to a new box or something), the league is still going. It's pretty much a self scheduling thing. I'm supposed to be getting a game together with Gowans, Alisdair, and Mr Yuyu.

In your conference, the first game is you, cheesemeister, flynn, and grifter. You guys need to organize and meet up whenever you can.

I'm kind of busy the rest of the week. I can play pretty much any time Sunday, 7am GMT to 11pm GMT. Gowans?

I quite enjoy it actually, mostly because I HATE playing any non-MMO/shooter online. The chance of droppers and cheaters is just irritating, and in my experience over the last 20 years of gaming, and the last 10 years of online gaming, getting a game started is just too long for me. I usually want to play sit down, and start a game immediately.

Also, I`m one of those people that doesn`t talk during online games. I don`t like trash talking, and I don`t like people trash talking me. I`m that guy in DOA4 you hate.

Sunday is fine for me. But only in the late-morning(from 10 am) or afternoon plz. Saturdaynight might be a very late/drunk night :D

I'll get back to you guys on the SUnday thing later today. I might be out and away from my 360 until late afternoon sunday (my time) which would probably be too late for everyone over there, especially Mr Yuyu.

EDIT: Yes, not coming back home until Sunday afternoon, so that's no good.

Does late night my time morning for you guys work for you monday/tues/wednesday morning?

I can play any time from 6:30am GMT til about 9:30am GMT on one of those mornings, maybe stretching to 10:30 on Tuesday.

I finally picked up Catan after procrastinating about it (also because I was waiting for the Halo 3 Beta). Ended up playing the single player for most of the night. I'd like to try it online sometime in the future so if people don't mind a novice in their games, feel free to send me an invite (tag is Zalasta524). I imagine counting cards is possible, since almost everything (from the resources obtained to the ones played/traded) is out in the open, except when you have to discard due to the robber dice roll. Tedious yes, but possible.

This is probably my favorite XBLA game, and one of the best games on the system. I have been playing this almost non-stop since release. I already mentioned that I was playing Catan instead of Halo 3 after getting an early invite, and that has not changed after all my friends have shifted focus to the Beta.

If anyone is still playing this, feel free to add me as a friend. I'd love nothing more than to unload my sheep on you.

Finally got my first ranked win. Two other guys were too busy fighting over the longest road :lol

Next ranked game I played was horrible. After 42 dice rolls I'd lost 12 cards and there had been a 7,7,8,7 and someone had played 8 robber/soldiers. By then everyone else had built around me and I just had to wait it out.

I wish this game tracked games better. I have problems connecting to XBL through my router. Though I can sign on and download games, I get booted after 10 - 20 minutes. Annoying as hell, but it doesn't usually affect my single player gaming. I just have to go through my modem directly to play games online.

Anyway, I play a lot of Catan, primarily against hard AI offline. Because games take about 20 minutes, I usually disconnect from Live before the conclusion. For some reason, it does not keep track of my results once I go offline. I currently have a record of 1-5 which is impossible since I have the Medium and Hard AI achievements.

Does this affect my path through the game as well? I think I have played enough games to have the 250 VP Achievement, but, because you can't look at your stats, I don't actually know how far I am. I don't care about the points, but I wish I could keep track of my record just to see how I've been doing.

It's the one frustrating thing for an otherwise great game.

Platypotamus, Alisdair, & Mr Yuyu if were still playing that game tonight then bash me and invite I'll be probably bouncing around in the Halo beta.

Looked at my friends ranked leaderboard the other day, man guys I have some catching up to do.

Well, if you got the Medium/Hard AI achievements, you should be able to get the VP achievements. Especially if you got the 100VP achievement, since that would be impossible with a record of 1-5.

Another league game done. Mr Yuyu won, with Gowans007 and I tying at 7 VP each. Great game, guys!

Is the league dead? Is anyone else playing?

I haven't played Catan online much since everyone's been bogged down with Halo, but I'm certainly still up for a league game though I suspect most of the people in the league have probably disappeared from Catan.

Good game last night guys!

on a sidenote. This game is infested with quiters. its really ruining the game man. I have yet to play a ranked match with 4 people playing untill the game is actually over.
The minute u build a road thats blocking their path, they just leave!! WTF man!!!

my proposal: People that quit more then 5 times a week get banned from xbox live for 24 hours.

I had some awesome Ranked games over the weekend. One game, the dice rolls were 9,9,3,3,9,9,9,9,9,9. Or something stupid like that. Of course I had no 9 or 3 settlements :(

Another game I was lucky enough to get a City down on the second turn and I ended up doubling the resources collected of anyone else (65, 32 was next highest). Another one had a guy complaining because someone traded me a sheep to give me the development card I needed to win :lol

The only thing that annoys me is when you constantly get hit with Robbers/Soldiers when you've got no resources. I've had a couple of games where people were expanding quite well and I kept getting hit. Very frustrating. So I just ended up building roads everywhere.

I hadn't noticed this thread. I love catan. My record is 6/56. :D I'm going to go play it right now.

I still fear there is a bug with my game. I have played so many matches now that I find it almost impossible to not have the 250 Achievement. Does anyone have this one yet?

Also, did anyone download the new skin? Doesn't seem worth it for me, just a skin, but I would like to see it. I could be persuaded if it's really cool.

I love catan, but seriously, what is this 'rank' about at one moment it is 50 the next 250?

btw any pics of that new skin?

Has anyone downloaded the new "generals" to challenge? I'm not real fond of paying 200 points for more AI opponents. Does it give you new acheivements or no?

Yeah, I have it. And it's just 6 new A.I. characters: Joan of Arc, Caesar, Tokugawa, Isabella, Hannibal, and Lenin. Not really worth it unless you mainly play single player games.

has anyone else had a problem with the text being corrupted in the game? i have seen all of the posts about it being too small, but nothing about the text being all blotchy and garbled looking. I have tried changing between 1080i and 720p but it doesnt make a difference.

Any ideas?

I love this game too, I'll play anyone here...or enter a possible tournament anytime.

I kind of like playing with the AI because it's really fast and a good way to try some new strategies, but the game is RIGGED on hard.

I've given up on playing the game on hard. As soon as you get ahead no one will trade at all with you (no matter what you're giving them) and then it seems like everyone is rolling 7s. From then on it's just a continuous process of the AIs moving the bandit around my territory and taking away all my cards. I know the guys over at BigHuge have stated that there isn't any rubberbanding AI going on but I really don't see how there could be any other explanation for it.

Okay, so I'm not the only one who has to deal with this...

It's their way of making it hard, I guess. I've won several times vs. hard AI.

One way to win is to wait until the end to complete your longest road or largest army. After learning to do that from several losses on normal mode, I managed to win hard on my first try.

It happens online too - I wish I'd kept stats but I think its 80%+ probability of rolling a 7 when anyone has 7 cards+. It's 90%+ if you have 8 cards in your hand.

Is there a reason you're not playing it online Hitler? Most of the people I've played online have been great (no gaffers yet sadly), besides the odd person dropping out after getting their initial settlements. I gave up on the single player for the reasons you've mentioned.

I got it after about 28 victories --- it doesn't count your initial placements as victory points. Keep going!

No real reason I suppose. Lately I've been playing it while listening to some audio books streaming from my computer just to unwind a little. I'm putting in such long days at work nowadays that it's just nice to have some time by myself.....that is until the freakin' AI starts rolling 7s. :p

From the Something Awful Photoshop Phriday Board Game Reality II...

:lol

after some fun time with bomberman live I gave this demo a shot and was hooked instantly through playing the tutorial. I'm going to download it in full tonight so invite me to your games if you have an open seat to fill and don't mind playing with someone very new to the game. GT = Paullenator.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but does anyone know if there is a fix for the lack of achievement tracking?

I am 15/34 in Ranked so that's 150+(34*5pts=170)=320. A conservative estimate and I haven't gotten the 100 or 250 VP achievement.

Should I try re-downloading the game?
