Yet another choke by Ivanovic, not surprised since she's played pretty shitty this whole year.
 
Wow, the wheels really have fallen off the Ivanovic train. I think they're about to fall off the Safina train as well.

I honestly didn't pay attention to Ivanovic when she was #1 - was she better then physically and/or mentally? Watching her now, I have a hard time imagining her as any sort of force on the tour.

Sharapova actually impressed me a bit today. I generally don't like her - mainly because of her horrible scream - but her serve seems to be getting better and her groundstrokes are pretty hot. They're not as solid as Dementieva's, but they're close. That is going to be one *hot* third-round match, assuming they both get through their next ones...

True, but between Sampras and Emerson/Laver it took a long time for that record to fall. Fed is truly a once in a century type player, and the game has and will only continue to get deeper making it tougher to rack up major titles. It would be great though if someone came along sooner with that type of talent though.

Stick a fork in Ivanovic, nothing about her game really stands out from the rest besides her face.
 
The announcers were just talking about Monfils brutal schedule assuming the right people win. He has to go through Ferrer, Nadal, Tsonga, Del Potro or Murray before he gets to Federer.

That's tough, but if he thinks about it he won't have to deal with that brutality for very long. If he isn't up to the challenge of that tree, someone else will step up to climb the very same rungs.
 
It sucks to see both Safin and Santoro lose first round. I was hoping at least one of these guys playing in their last tournament would win a round. But I'm going to miss Santoro more than Safin. Santoro was the freakin magician!

He's doing good. We've seen a lot of this so far and I'm not sure it's just that the seeds aren't playing well.

btw when is Serena playing, if anyone could tell me.

He's pounding returns to Federer. He could go home right now and be proud of what he's doing.

Of course he's going to lose in straight sets, but he deserves some credit for this performance.

This is one of the better Opens that I remember. It's been exciting for sure.
 
Greul had a very good result a few years ago (2007 maybe) in a a major master series event, but has languished between 80-150ish in the rankings for the last several years. When a game is as global as tennis is, and you have only one worldwide league the depth is going to be amazing, and only getting better as the years go by. As training methods improve the line between 1 and 100 is going to get smaller and smaller, and that is one reason why I believe Federer's major record of 15 slams will probably never fall.
 
Federer has the amazing ability to win even when he isn't on top of his game. No one else on the tour really has that ability as evidenced by the fact that no one is remotely as consistent as Fed in the Slams. I felt bad for Gruels because in some of the games I felt like he was hitting better shots but Fed somehow still finds a way to win.

I wish I had that talent when I used to play tennis competitively. :lol
 
Man, Serena is just dominating.


Oh, and I'd totally recommend that anyone in the NYC metropolitan area go check out some matches. Tickets were pretty cheap for the night session, and the weather yesterday was perfect.

Fed hits all the points that are crucial. He's been getting a lot of tie-breaks this year but usually ends up winning them.

The thing about Federer is that he's very mentally tough (being able to make several aces in a row in a tie break, or make an ace on a break point), he's very smart strategically, and he has the best technique of any player on the tour. He has every shot in his arsenal for his chosing. Those three things allow him to prevail even when not everything is happening for him.
 
I've got a bad gut feeling about Murray, like he won't get the opportunity to test Federer for revenge. Also Nadal just looked like his former best self and could sneak win this tournament. Wouldn't surprise me, but will probably get a few "OMG he's back" headlines when he never was gone.

Also, heh @ Kirilenko losing her Stella McCartney deal and then taking off, finally. Her match against Aggie Radwanska was ROCK SOLID and impressed me.. hope she can come into her own. I saw the first signs of a new Kiri at the Swedish Open.

re: agrajag. Well she was some years ago and everyone predicted grand slams.. then she 'did an ivanovic'. But she's been on the rise again the past few months and really revamping her game.
 
Safina entertains me for the wrong reasons.

I think during the French Open she must have dropped the first set in every match leading upto the final (I think?).

However the schtik is getting old now.

I meant Kournikova and Sharapova hottness. Like literal hotness. Hence the number of sexy pictures I posted.
 
Maria Kirilenko is the old hotness (losing the adidas deal relieving some pressure in her game?)

No she lost no sets and almost no games in every match leading up to the final. Steamrolled her opponents. But she is/was a terrible bore, though.

This Oudin is great, and only 17? She should be top 20/10 material in a year or two with this kind of play. Love her tactical sense of the court, her slices.
 
Safina's going to be in deep shit the second she finally faces an opponent of a decent rank. She's just barely edging by these low ranked players. Anyone that can put together a consistent game is going to put her away in straight sets.

she did well at wimbledon too. they are thinking she is the next hope for American womens tennis. but shes going to have to work even harder because she's only 5 foot 5 inches.

She got the luckiest draw in the whole frickin world. She has to work really hard to lose before the semis.
