Dementieva may be my favorite player on the women's tour right now (and my favorite to win the US Open), but this Oudin girl is really good and fully deserves to win (if that's how the match ends up). Why isn't she higher in the rankings?

Because she's 18 and this is her 4th Grand Slam.

Ah, well, there you go :)

One thing about Dementieva that I've noticed in the last few tournies: When she's under pressure, she can't get her first serve in for the life of her. Why doesn't she take a bit of pace off of it and make sure it goes in? It would save her from having to worry about the DFs all the time.

Also, in this match, she's giving way too much court away to Oudin by standing so far behind the baseline.

Nice angled overhead. Good girl, feels like she's from the Capriati school of tennis. With a dash of Henin. look forward to Sharapova routing her in the next round.

Wow, Oudin is the real deal. Maybe she'll be able to show the other ladies (esp. Safina, Jankovic and Ivanovic) how it's done :)

I'm not particularly surprised Dementieva is out... I have her out in the 3rd round in my draw. But I'm surprised at Oudin's level of play.

Oh, crap, this means Oudin vs. Sharapova in the next round, doesn't it? Hopefully Oudin's leg will be OK by then. Otherwise, I think Sharapova will power through.

This certainly is going to be a weird tournament. I'd love to see either Sharapova or Clijsters get to the final, though I know that's more than a bit of a pipe dream :)

wtf is going on today? I know Oudin did well at wimbledon and she's been playing well without getting breakthrough results but Dementieva has looked really good recently.

If jankovic loses the top of the draw is wide open for sharapova. (so much for my prediction)

It will only be a route if Oudin's leg is bothering her too much. otherwise I see 7-5,6-4

don't know who wins though

Not shocked by Lisicki.

Not overly shocked by Jankovic, but her exit is a little early.

Absolutely appalled by Elena's effort. Disgraceful performance. Like Peru said, Maria to rinse her in the next round, £500 on it to make back what I just lost on Dementieva.

Was really looking forward to Sharapova vs. Dementieva round 2.

it would be crazy if two 17 year old americans took out two of the top ranked russians in the same day. but oudin is just really good, mchale i don't think is there yet but this has been a crazy open...

Ivanovic is done too. The quick rise and fall of Serbian tennis

I don't know what the hell happened to Ivanovic. I think you could see Jankovic's fall coming, but Ivanovic's fall is really odd.

Has anyone seen Sharapova play live? I had awesome seats two weeks ago in Toronto after watching the Jankovic marathon game.

She is so annoying when she gets a winner and screams:

"COME ON!!!"

It is mostly that there is nothing that seperates Ivanovic from the rest of the field, much like Jankovic she has no major weapons.

A bout of Kournikovitis? Good thing she already won stuff.

They both have Martina Hingis' game. it worked well before the rise of the Williams sisters, but consistency isn't enough today in the womens.

That's an insult to Hingis, because Hingis had touch and could volley. Ivanovic and Jankovic have zero touch, don't volley well, and have little to no variety or intelligence on court. That is why they can be beat by players way below them in the rankings. The top of the women's game has not progressed in the last 6 years, that is the reason why Kim Clijsters can come back on tour and tune up Bartoli in the second round. Clijsters is a thinker, Bartoli is just trying to kill the ball everytime she hits it. The only good match today was the Oudin match, that was well played, but man watching some of these other women's matches today has been tough to do.

For an outsider, it seems like the tactical advantage to serving in the women's game is questionable.

They were talking about it earlier today on ESPN. Outside of the Williams sisters, women pros don't really practice their serves, apparently.

even Sharapova? her serves, at least before all this adjustment due to her shoulder, were pretty impressive if i remember right. probably not at the level of the Williams sisters, but still pretty big

well if anything, she probably practices it even more now to get it back up to speed

Yeah, I thought Sharapova's serves were really good before her injury.

No they don't. Hingis is one of the most gifted players to grace women's tennis. But you are right though, Hingis suffered after the rise of the Williams sisters. Beauty was replaced by sheer power and a little sprinkle of touch. Hingis was a thinker on court and she could outsmart everyone she played against, and if she had a little more power she would have been as dominant as Federer. She would have definitely had a long dominant streatch like Federer.

To me, women's tennis died when Hingis went away. Her suspension ends this month, and if Clijsters's comback turns out to be very successful, I am hoping that Hingis comes back too.

really? her suspension ends this month? i wasn't aware. I doubt she will come back though. I think she really did cocaine and she knows if she stays low she will never have to come clean. But I hope I'm wrong, I liked watching the swiss miss back in the day, but she wouldn't be top 10 material today. touch and smarts isn't enough to be in the top 10, even with all the top players struggling.

she actually played a warmup match last year before Wimbledon. But she has said that she is not planning on coming back. I don't think she did cocaine. She is not stupid and she never seemed like the type of person to take drugs, especially right before a GS event!! She didn't want to appeal the charges because it would take years for that to happen and a lot of effort and she simply said that it is not worth it because she is retiring anyways.

It's really a shame Hingis had absolutely no power, I loved watching her with all of her cheeky dropshots and volleys.
