I threw out my arm between tennis and home run derby.
Gaming now requires stretching. Lame, Nintendo. Lame.

dyls said:I don't know why so many reviewers said Golf was broken. I think it rules. True, there are some pretty big problems: only 9 holes, only 4 clubs. But it nails a major aspect of real Golf that no video game has before. You have to take practice swings if you want to do well, and you have to be able to mimic the practice swing when actually addressing the ball.
In real Golf, people will take beautiful practice swings, but when it's actually time to hit, they will overswing and shank it. Only good players can re-create the practice swing under pressure, and the same is very true for WiiSports Golf. That, alone, makes it the best representation of Golf that I've ever played.

PkunkFury said:Can you explain to me how? I am having trouble purposely curving the ball in a particular direction. I am curious if you can aim the ball to the side and get consistant results. If that is the case something may be wrong with my remote or the way I am swinging

moku said:5.)Tennis-The loss of player movement is a critical flaw. Everyone thought is was fun, and the racket controll just kills any other tennis game, well, becuase its actually movement, but not bieng able to move your charactor just kills any enjoyment. It's such a major over-sight it just kills it dead.
Oh no dont get me wrong. I am ABSOLUTLY POSITIVE that when I bring my Wii to Thanksgiving, that my family will go nuts over it. The 5 we had together last night are all experienced gamers, and have had MARATHONS of Mario Tennis.Memles said:Couldn't disagree more. While it might make things a little less hardcore, the lack of movement makes Tennis easily understandable for the casuals. I already have people who do not play video games in the least wanting one of these things in residence, based almost purely on the basis of Tennis. Sure, they too love Bowling/Baseball when they get into them, but it's Tennis that's their gateway drug. And if you had to move AND swing? It would be far too complicated.
You nailed it. There is something viceral(sp?) about playing the Wii. When we usually get together to play Smash, Halo, e.t.c. the lights are dim, people are hunched over playing, cursing under thier breath.Dragmire said:This game blew my mind. I didn't think it be worth much time other than to experiment with the Wii remote. But I played it at my friends house today (I can't afford a Wii right now), and I had fun with every game. There's a social aspect to playing it that's different from most games, like you're not even playing a videogame (I don't know if this would even be fun by yourself). I couldn't quit smiling or laughing while I was playing.

Completly different experience to have everyone standing, laughing like little kids, flaling all over the place.
Fun as hell. I could see tournements set up for people to come and play the pro's.
Man what BLAST.

I'm looking forward to this.
have you tried not doing a backswing and just flicking your wrist forward? thats how i handle my short shotsLakeEarth said:I love it but I have a slight problem with golf. Anytime you're less than 5 feet from the cup, you have to barrrrrrely hit the ball to get it in. Problem is swinging that light usually doesn't register. I have a hard time getting weak shots in. I was on my way to a birdie 3 feet from the hole, and instead I ended at +6![]()

Boxing and golf are getting a lot more love than they did in reviews, and at the same time, some people seem to absolutley hate them.. It's almost like the people are playing totally different games.
I wonder if this is some byproduct of this new control method... maybe some people get the hang of it faster than others or something.
Very strange. When i hear one person talking about how amazing boxing is, and then another person says that it seems to be based on luck with no skill involved and no real control over the fists, i have to wonder what's causing such a drastic difference in perception.
all this talk has got me much more excited for wii sports than i was before and it's made me wonder about all the reviews for other games... Red steel for example seems to be getting much better reactions than i would have expected.
frogg609 said:I played it with 4 people tonight. Tennis is awesome. Boxing is cool, but takes some getting used to. Bowling takes a loooong time with 4 people. That's all we tried so far, then started playing Red Steel multi.
Well, reviewers are the hardcore of the hardcore, seriously. It also seems like games need a certain bit of production values for someone to give out high scores instead of just how much fun it is to play.Krowley said:don't have a wii yet, so i've been checking out impressions and i've noticed the same thing. EphemeralDream said:If Nintendo can keep this up, then the gaming world is going to get really interesting. I was also initially angry about this pack-in, but it's made me see that this console has amazing potential. And when a player is so immersed in the experience (any DDR player knows this), then little graphical problems will often go unnoticed so perhaps even some graphic whores might get a rude awakening.

You are correct, it is a software issue. A very complicated task to get right for programmers actually. Wii games will probably have dedicated controller programmers.Krowley said:I'm getting the feeling that it's all because of gesture recognition... I'm thinking the wii is relying more on gesture recognition than it does on 3d axis detection (except in games where you use a cursor, which obviously use the sensor bar and all that)... As a result, different gamers will have different ways of performing the same action and the games have to take each possible variation into account.
Because of this, the launch games, (which had to be finished quickly_ aren't quite as flexible as they should be.
In some ways this actually bodes well for the future, because i was reading in another thread were a guy was playing monkey golf in SMB, and figured out that he had to do thing in a very exact/precise way to get it to work right. That means that the wiimote is actually incredibly sensitive when it comes to this gesture recognition tech.
Future games with lots of focus group testing will allow for incredibly varied actions and very precise reactions with more flexibility. I remember reading that the madden people spent a lot of time focus group testing on their gestures for that game and you can see that most people are loving it. There are very few complaints that things aren't working right.
For other games, some gamers actually find them to be broken while others can use them instantly.
This means that you will get an incredibly wide reaction to these launch games because for some people they will work well instantly and other people will actually have to learn to interact with the games and the movements that work will feel unnatural for them.
It's a pretty cool result, assuming my theory is right, simply because no other game console has ever had such a strange issue and it means that the wii is already bringing something new to gaming in a big way (even if it is a problem, it's still a *new* problem)
