**The Official** Wii Sports Thread

OMG this sucks.
Wii Sports is not working, it gives me a disc read error.
I don't know if it's the system, or the game.
Rayman and Zelda take at least 10 seconds to show up, is this typical, or is my system ****ed?

Wii Sports was my most anticipated game and I can't even play it. :(
Amirox doesn't know how fortunate he is.

I'm really liking Boxing. Its mechanics are sort of the inverse of what someone might expect when they're told you can play a boxing game with motion sensitive controllers. To put it simply, instead of having analog Motion controlled hits, you have analog control over your body and your punches are digital, executed like moves in a fighting game (not exactly "natural" but they make sense).

It strikes an interesting balance thus far. When you Wiimote bob and Wiive (wahaha), while in motion the timing of your punches is slower (either that or you can't actually punch while in certain parts of dodging).

But the body movement isn't only for dodges but for aiming your attacks as well. So you're striking a balance between getting into the optimal position for both blocks and attacks which for me (as of now) I can't do. So getting out of the way of that incoming attack puts me in a terrible position to counter. I'm currently working on striking a nice balance.

I'm currently working on some custom punching combos. From what I can tell there is a rapid punch combo you can do by rappidly punching the Wiimote and Chuku in the air. In true fighting game fashion, it looks like I can time out the auto combo and get a personal attack in there.

Oh, and for all of you wondering why the reviews didn't mention any of this stuff its because these reviewers aren't worth spit. 1ups by the numbers, scratching the surface oops a broke a nail time to stop, review was about as terrible as it gets. The shot time they spent with their review is pretty indicative of their attitude towards the game from the beggining.

I can't say how much lasting value this game has but my god does it have tremendous initial appeal. I started playing the 2nd Boxing Training game (Trainer throws balls at you and player has to dodge) and I couldn't stop laughing. It was so over the top and I love how the trainer kind of fakes you out or starts going crazy on you sometimes. You can definitely feel the Nintendo charm in this game.

I got a bronze medal, what are your records and distances? ill give it a go once my tendonitis calms down

C-Webb: Make sure no smudges are on the disc, make sure its being inserted the right way and etc. if your other games are working its a problem with the disc

i tried it today at the office for the 1st time, I doing like it, I'm not a fan of inacurate games and games of chance, it feels too loose and it's hard to get grip of reality when trying to believe you are controlling a bowling ball, boxing gloves or a tennis wrack

call me a pooper, i'm old fashionned

if you were actually old fashioned, you'd how to spell and construct literate sentences, and you'd possess an imagination

Uhhh if you actually spend time with it, it won't feel like a "game of chance". My first round of home run derby, I hit 1 home run. After playing a game of baseball, I hit 6 home runs in HRD.

Also are you doing small gestures or full motions? If you're doing small gestures, then it will never feel like the real thing.

I was reading some stuff on Boxing at gamefaqs (unfortunately, it's about the only place I've seen active discussions). It sounds as if it is better and more responsive than many review let on if you're familiar with how the Mii will respond to your movements. Much like you've described, if you try to actually box, it won't feel quite right, but if you understand the gestures that trigger different punches and movements, it's quite playable.

As an aside, Bowling and Tennis both rock and feel intuitive right from the start.

Just pulled a -3

3 3 4 3 4 5 5 2 4

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

4 3 5 3 5 4 4 3 5

2 4 5 4 5 5 4 5 2

Overall for a -4. That's right, I had an eagle and double eagle, both extremely awesome 100+ yard shots that went into the cup. The second one skipped into the cup, but the first one teetered on the edge of the cup before falling in.

I didn't get so lucky on hole 2. The ball sat on the edge of the cup but didn't go in so I got a bogey, and I shot the ball off the cliff on hole 8. I could have easily had a -6 had I not screwed up.

They're all fun, but my favorite is baseball. Someone desperately needs to make a full-fledged baseball game using this control setup. It's so much fun!

Super Swing Golf. It may not feature Miis, and it may not feel the same as Wii Sports Golf, but it's better than nothing.

Hm. That just looks like an x-treme golf game with horrible looking anime characters. Not really what I'm hoping for. I'm hoping Nintendo steps up and makes a realistic mini-golf game that features the Miis.

Mario Golf: Wii Tour

Make there be "cups" of different courses that are 9 or 18 holes that feature the Miis, and once you move up the ranks some Nintendo characters will start joining the cups, and the highest cup Mario himself plays in it.

I know this might be obvious, but it doesn't hurt to say it...are you sure you're inserting it right?

I suck at Wii bowling, the ball curves left 90% of the time. I'm holding my wrists straight, but it isn't helping.

yeah, you suck.

however bowling presents a huge burden as you got to do good otherwise your skill rating goes down. i just stunk up my room because i did so bad on my last bowling game and my rating dropped 40 or so points

The other games are working fine, and I've tried it at least 10 times, so I'm pretty sure that's not it.
I'm trying to determine if my Wii has a problem (how long after you insert a game does it usually take to acknowledge it?), or if my Wii Sports is broken.

I am going to sound like an idiot when asking this, but is the front of the racket in tennis the A button side? I can't seem to get it to do anything other then lob shots so I assume I am holding the controller at a weird angle.

Tennis is fantastic. My mom put in about 4 hours today alone into tennis and she's getting crazy good, owning me with aces. Backhands, Forehands, Spins, lobs, on the line shots, all doable, and SO much fun!

Here's my story.....

So Monday evening a female friend of mine came over to do some laundry. I said "sure, no problem". She knew I had got the Wii on Sunday. She was on my futon watching TV and saw the Wiimote on the end table. She picked it up and asked about it. She hadn't tried it yet, didn't really know a whole lot about it (except for it's name and that it was out). I asked her if she wanted to try it out. She said "Sure". I popped in WiiSports and off we went.

This was at approximately 10:00pm on Monday evening.

We played 1 game of bowling and then she wanted to create her Mii, which she did...she had a blast with it, creating herself.

Fast forward to 2:45am (approximately 30 minutes ago)...we finally finish bowling.

Over 4 hours of straight bowling. None of it sitting down. We were standing up, going through the motions, just having one hell of a time. Lots of trash talking and just overall FUN. She had a GREAT TIME. She kept saying "Let's play again". "Let's play again". "Let's play again".

Incredible.

(and she got so into bowling, she kept forgetting about the laundry :lol )

Okay... my Wii Sports impressions.

I expected to hate this game. Or at least be completely disinterested in it. With the exception of Camelot's sports-themed RPGs, I've never enjoyed or found any appeal in a sports game at all, and I especially didn't think I'd like one as limited as Wii Sports.

But, I figured I'd try it out for a bit, just to get a little bit of my money's worth on the game being forced on us, and to familiarize myself with some of the controls (seems to be a standard story here). A few minutes, tops. I'd try it, be bored with it / hate it, move on to Zelda or Trauma Center.

Instead, I ended up playing it for a good forty minutes or so, at least. I tried one sport, moved on to the next. I don't know why -- I really don't -- but I just had an incredible amount of fun playing these games. My favorites were tennis and boxing (despite its semi-randomness), though I also liked golf quite a bit. It's a really amazing, and extremely fun game. Not at all what I expected.

Baseball was my least favorite.

It's interesting how it seems like everyone who enjoys Wii Sports is liking different games out of it. And yeah, it definitely shows that there's a ton of potential here for full fledged versions of all of these games.

the score you posted is messed up, adds up to even doesn't it? But damn, how'd you get a double eagle on the ninth? You knocked it in with a driver from the fairway?

good question, I haven't figured that out either... in baseball I couldn't hit the ball out of the infield until I started holding the wiimote exactly as the picture tells you to.

I have to think that Pennant Chase Baseball was moved to Wii for just this reason. I expect it to be full-on motion madness.

on the 9th hole, aim for that island on the left. you are going to have to overshoot, you don't have a choice. its a gamble, as you have to rely on a bit of luck to have the ball land on that island. if you get it(and i did) the green is an easy shot for your second shot. i happened to land mine in.

threeball,

Have you found a way to get your overshots to consistently go right or left? You think it's random?

Yeah, this thread pretty much firms up my belief that when people take their Wii's home to their family's house over Thanksgiving, it is going to destory. Non-gamers are going to flip out.

That's exactly what I"m going to be doing. My golf loving brother is going to freaking love Wii Sports. I only got one controller though :(

This game is great, much more fun than i though it would be. Ive been playing every night with my wife and daughter. My favorites are bowling and tennis.

Our highest bowling scores are:
Me : 174
Wife :175
Daughter : 175 and got the first turkey
Owned in bowling by my 6 yr old....ouch

This seems like the perfect pack-in game for the console, even my inlaws are asking me to bring it over for thanksgiving so they can try it. I guess nintendo was onto something.....

Ive only got one also, ive been trying to get another with no luck. When i picked up my console on sunday morning at CC some a-hole who didnt get a console bought all 6 wiimotes, 6 classic controllers, and 6 nunchuks. I was 2 people behind him in line......i was pissed.

Bowling is great! Feels just right! Tennis is decent, but man, I wish I had more space in front of my tv. Golf...um can someone explain to me how to putt?

Nabs said:

Timing deals more with what direction you hit the ball more than anything else. Also hitting big smashes and diving for the ball definitely happen when you do fast wide swings either overhead or to your side for the dive.

I finally put one out of the park, by out of the park I don't mean a home run. I mean an over the upper deck out of the park home run. Getting the medals is a bitch I think I have most of the bronze, one maybe two silvers and no gold.

Try ordering directly thru nintendo. I dunno if they have a backorder though.

i can't track it down right now... but i believe in those "Iwata asks" interviews on the nintendo site they say there's no randomness at all in wii sports (they were talking about bowling at the time i think, but i think they were talking about the package as a whole wrt the randomness).

ah... here it is (they may be just talking about bowling here...):

Shimamura But if you do bowl it in exactly the same way, the ball will roll the same way.

Iwata There aren't any arbitrary random factors, are there?

Shimamura None at all.

from: http://ms.nintendo-europe.com/wii/?site=v4_04.html&expand=4&l=enGB

...of course... some people seem to think the controller isn't flawless, so it might be "random" in the sense that it isn't reading your movements properly every time...

Can you play the games where you take turns with only one controller and pass it around, or do you *have* to have more than one?

TheOMan said:

For games like Golf and Bowling all you need is one controller.

Boxing, Tennis, and Baseball obviously need more than one.

It seems to me that most of the sports only rely on you moving the controller to recieve what we used to consider a "button press". For instance, I move my controller left and right and the pitcher still throws the ball straight. You actually have to use the d-pad and buttons to change the type of pitch and where it goes. Why couldn't I just twist the remote?
The exception being bowling and the batting part of baseball. You really have to follow through the motions in bowling, flicking your wrist doesn't give a good response. And in baseball you really have to aim the bat (but you can still just flick your wrist).
I actually expect more than this out of the games. Some may say it is a software issue and they just need more dedicated programmers to dealing with input response. But if this is the software that's supposed to show off the wii, you'd think they would of done it the best they could.
I feel like I'm playing with a gimmick that I will get tired of.

I think it does show it of very well except for if you make it a priority to find out every little flaw and how little you can get away with. Most people seem perfectly content with giving into the illusion.

Besides, if you stand at an angle to your TV, would you want to have to pitch the ball orthogonal to your TV, thus, facing the wall next to it?

I absolutely love Wii Boxing. My favorite sport by far.

Once you get the dodging and combos you will be having a blast.

Trust me on this one.
