The One Thing You Appreciate This Generation

- Wireless controllers
- Multi-media hub capabilities
- Free online
- No memory cards
- User upgradable HDDs
- Reliability (not applicable to the 360)
- Less expensive games ($29.99 after a couple months)

I echo wireless controllers, independent gaming, and on-board storage. Add to that increased and enhanced online support and you've got the winning package.

I'm not sure how long they've been running for but I've only recently come to appreciate gaming podcasts. 8-4 Play and the Bombcast are more entertaining than a group of guys discussing video games have any right to be.

Steam

The current gen consoles have been pretty disappointing for the most part. The vast majority of good current gen games have superior PC versions available. The only console games I play these days are PS2, GC and Wii games via PCSX2 and Dolphin on the gaming PC hooked up to my HDTV.

older generations

The rise of Steam if that counts. Technically we don't have generations over on this side of the fence.

Otherwise this is a really tough question. I don't appreciate much of anything the consoles have done this generation in games, features or business. I like achievements/trophies but at times my obsession with them has probably not been the healthiest.

I'm embarrassed how many games I played over the last 7 years that I didn't give a shit about, but the achievements were easy. (And the money I spent on said games)

As someone who thinks games should just be fun and not need these meaningless rewards to get us to play them...

Yeah I think you should be embarrassed.

Just because the games themselves weren't fun, it doesn't mean the meta-game of seeing an achievement "pop" isn't fun.

I'm embarrassed because I supported developers who put out shitty games, not because I didn't enjoy the time I spent getting the achievements.

You're not using gamefly? When I was introduced to that I was just the worst. I remember the mail lady dropping off avatar (the anime one, not the cameron one) and I got 1000/1000 in 2 minutes (it's really that easy!) and was able to drive to the next street and give it back to her to send back to gamefly. I also rented a bunch of shit like Cars, and I couldn't even be bothered to get 1000 in that because of some collection one I was too lazy to do.

The shame of having Cars on your list at all let alone failing to max it out is like trying to go on a diet and ending up eating an entire large pizza.

More than one but I appreciate;

  • How easy it became to acquire arcade sticks with high quality parts
  • USB ports for controllers becoming standard and plug and play compatibility with PC(for the most part)
  • Fighting game netplay.(Online play in general for console games.)
  • Platinum Games championing the spirit of PS2 era gaming

This might be the obvious answer, even though no one's saying it.

VISUALS and SOUND

Games look and sound better (on a technical, and debatably, on an artistic level) than they ever have before. I still, STILL marvel at my plasma as a match of UMvC3 starts, or I clear a chapter in Uncharted 2, or I listen all around me as I walk through Rapture in Bioshock.

Like goddamn. You have to be inhuman not to appreciate the massive leaps games have taken on an aesthetic level over the last decade.

Sorry I dont mean it as a personal attack. Lots of people are just like you... but I still think its dumb.

I remember playing Golden Eye back in the day and they had set timers in the maps that if you beat you could unlock cheats and such. These days... a number pops up and thats supposed to make me happy. Yet sadly extra little fun stuff like cheats has been removed to make sure gamers dont get numbers poping up to easy.... or you get that exta stuff from paid dlc. :/

I'll wax nostalgic with you all night long, if you want to talk about the "good times" haha.

To honestly answer this thread though, I would say "This console generation made me appreciate just how much I took good JRPGs for granted in the past.".

Lost Odyssey was the closest thing to anything decent I played in the past few years and I didn't even really love it.

The 360 controller. Best controller ever, and it's usable on PC, too.

The hardware in the ps3, blu-ray, 3d, wireless, bluetooth, media hub, etc. Felt I got my moneys worth. If they would have added more ram and a better gpu it would have been a beast.

I've got more than one!

1. Rapid price drops
2. Digital delivery on PC
3. Steam sales
4. Resurgence of fighting games thanks to decent net code and sf4
5. The humbling of Sony?

Xbox 360 controller compatibility for most current PC games. It's nice to be able to play console games with better framerate and loading times.

Steam
Free 2 Play MMO's / Games
GoG.com
PC Gaming

Consoles have been pretty much only negative for gaming this Gen.
