The orange box (PS3 version): Is it worth buying?

If you're not going to play it anywhere else, by all means get it on PS3. I've played the whole thing up to Episode 2 (about 3 hours in), and the performance issues are pretty overblown. The biggest issue is probably going to be how TF2 is supported going forward. Loads in Portal are long, but not terrible.

It must be played on whatever you have. I bought the 360 version and played through everything, and it was fine. I've since bought the PC version, and prefer it, but you can't lose either way.

What is the TF2 community size on the PS3. When I was on 360 the community dwindled quick after CoD4 came out.

I would pick the PS3 version up today if the TF2 community was happening. Loved it, but it just couldn't get traction on the 360.

Also, is Valve releasing the big updates for TF2 on the consoles?

Its not huge, but I don't have any problems finding games with 12+ people.

Its about time that I play the Half Life games, but I'm concerned about the problems with the PS3 version. From the reviews it sounds like the PS3 version has some serious frame rate and loading problems. Now I can cope with the occasional drops in framerate, but it sounds pretty bad. IGN even said that it borders on being unplayable.

I cant see myself buying an Xbox anytime soon and I'm not going to play this on the PC, so the PS3 version is the only option I have. Is it worth it or is the framerate and the loading times really as bad as they're made to sound in reviews?

It's not even half bad as what people will tell you here.
You won't notice much FPS problems except for Episode 2. And it's not game breaking. Don't miss this excellent collection.

Yes, however I experienced a nasty lockup in the second to last chapter. No matter what I did or how many times I restored it, it locked up in the same place. Since I couldn't restart the chapter until I beat it, I used the stage select code to restart the chapter. No consistent lockups after that.

Beside the Framerate problems, loading times, exploit abusal in TF2 which wont be fixed, lag servers and no updates which PC have/get. You should get it

Even with all the mentioned problems, I still cant see how it could be crap. HL2 is probably the best FPS Ive ever played. The episodes are quite good too.

And then there's Portal, which is supposedly awesome. I have not played it since my 360 died but I plan on getting the PS3 edition later.

I had the exact same problem and I just restarted the level to fix it. This is a huge bug that persists on the 360, PS3, and PC version of the game. It's not limited to the PS3. Search on it and you'll find people on all platforms had that same issue. Luckily for me it was only about 5 minutes worth of game that had to be replayed.

I'm almost done with the original game (on PS3) and there is definitely no reason not to experience this game. It plays great on PS3, although obviously not as well as its 360 or PC counterpart, but like I said, still no reason not to get the game. A few random areas will have a second or two of hang time, but it's never got me killed and is rarely an annoyance.

Good stuff. Yeah, that chapter was pretty short. No big loss. But I was pissed before that.

I just picked it up for PS3 this morning (got it for $35, couldn't resist) and started playing though Portal. It runs good enough for me. The only time I saw frames dropping was when I looked though a portal that had multiple room reflections in it, and it didn't hamper gameplay at all.

I do hear a static noise every once in a while. At first I thought it was a location specific thing, or a design choice if I was taking too long because "all is not as it seems" in Portal, but now I'm thinking it's a glitch? Anyone else have the static noise? It's basically static like you're listening to aging analog recording and is fairly loud. It goes away if I load a save and pausing the game also pauses the sound (the restarts when I un-pause).

Actually I forgot about the Portal: The Flash Mappack..

It's actually pretty well put together and maybe a reason to get Portal and TF2 on the PC

It's not a bad port, and while it certainly is the weakest of the 3 it's still entirely playable. The framerate does feel a bit slow at times, but it's not as bad as some people make it out. I didn't have any issues with Portal, but I've had some loading issues where the game will freeze trying to load HL2 Ep 1; to fix this I just deleted the game data and it worked after reinstalling.

I'd say if you can get it for a decent price, go for it.

The hidden purpose of this post is to brag about the fact that today I picked up the 360 version for $30 at Target thanks to a sale and an awesome coupon. Yay.

Why aren't you going to play it on PC? It's definitely the superior version, and as I recall the Source engine is pretty playable even with lower-end specs.

This.

<3 Source for being so scalable.

I'm giving you the angry eyes Unreal Engine 3! :@

Unreal Engine 3 is incredibly optimised on the PC, and scales pretty well as well. It obviously doesn't go as far down as Source, but then, its a good 3 years newer so that's to be expected.

It definitely is worth buying. If people were claiming OB is the "best value in gaming" for a while, it sure as hell doesn't become not worth buying due to a couple framerate hitches.

i have the ps3 version, its pretty good and i have had no problems with it

if its your only option in getting to play Portal, HL2 ect......then get it

wait..wait. I need clarification. So the OP has a PC that can run the game ok and he still won't buy it but is interested in the PS3 version? What planet are you from,Jesus Christ.

I played both back to back.

The PS3 'Box runs noticably worse than the 360 one.

But the frame drops are not as annoying as the insane loading. lol And both versions have that.

Orange Box is awesome. I have it on PS3 and I think that the particular way these games shine is not dulled by the imperfect porting process.

I bought it for the PS3 for 24 bucks, brand new at work. We were putting games on clearance to make more room for new games. I haven't opened it yet. I hope it's worth it when I get to it.
