The Outrun Online Arcade (XBLA/PSN) Official Thread

Only 720p, really? What was there excuse for jettisoning native 1080p rendering? The hardware is more than capable enough for it. The difference between "HD" outrun and good old Outrun 2006 for the PC is pretty staggering.

I'll pass, thanks.

Because the game runs at 60fps and they didn't want crappy tearing. The Xbox 360 doesn't have enough "frame-buffer RAM" to run 60fps 1080p without tearing (to avoid tearing you need to be drawing to one buffer while displaying a different one, the 360 doesn't have a large enough frame-buffer to hold two full 1080p screens at once).

Tiling.

So yeah, it could be better visually, and no Euro remixes sucks (easily "fixed" by ripping the MP3s to the 360 HDD though), but it's still OUTRUN 2SP, and it still FUCKING ROCKS. It's a blast, it's only ten bucks, AND people are actually playing it online for once! :lol

I've played about probably 10 matches or so online earlier today, and I had no bugs at all, especially that crazyness you experienced...

Loving the game, gonna hop back into it tomorrow again, but I gotta say that it's a bit challenging to jump back into again even if I'm doing fine - good ol' OutRun racing...

So what is the best option for getting a better point score in the game?

Actually I think it's nothing more than just going as fast as possible without bumping anything to slow down, because the more cars & rivals you pass, the more points you get - it's tough I know, I tried twice and only hit about 800,000 or so...

Gonna try again tomorrow...

Slipstream, stay on the road and out of the dirt, don't hit other cars, and make sure not to touch your rivals when you pass them. I noticed that I get 50,000 extra points for passing my rival without touching him. If I do touch him, it drops down to 12,500. :(

Any tips for for beating time trial in 4mins and 30secs or less? Do I just have to learn to drift better?

What does this mean, O heavenly god of all-knowing graphical knowledge? :)

Basically split the framebuffer into individual "tiles" which can each individually fit into the 360's eDRAM. Any game that renders at 720p with any sort of MSAA is using tiling, because that creates a buffer that is larger than the eDRAM's 10MB limit. If its not using tiling then its either not native 720p or its not using any MSAA so there's every chance that the game is using tiling anyway, so there's no reason why 1080p shouldn't be supported.

Basically it seems like this is a very lazy port and is not quite as good as it should have been which is a damn shame given the fact that the online mode in the PC version is dead.

Tiling is hardly uncommon, and its widely accepted that you need to use tiling to get decent image quality out of the 360.

As someone who likes outrun, and has no plans to play online, and isn't so fussed about graphics (unless the framerate is dying) am I better off getting Outrun 2 Coast to Coast (PS2)? I was going to pickup the PSN release, but just saw C2C at EBGames for a good price.

Even if you don't plan to play online mode, you'll still get a kick out of the leaderboards for your top score. It'll last longer that way :)

Slipstream and passing rivals. Both score lots of points. And increase the difficulty level in the game settings (the default is "very easy"). This will give more cars on the road, meaning more points for passing cars and more slipstreaming opportunities.

Pass more rivals. You get 50k (green) for a clear pass and 12.5k if you bump them.

I didn't go back to Arcade Mode since early this afternoon, but after reading this, I just retried and got just over 1 mil (by just 720 points since I STILL managed to bump a rival) - can't believe I never noticed that - thanks!

The game looks pretty jaggy free to me. Seems to be 4xAA?

No idea, but there's practically no jaggies on my CRT here - game looks great...

Also use manual transmission to score higher (higher top speed). I nearly got 1 million on route C, I'm currently 85th on the leaderboards for that route at the moment.

F40+manual transmission = win.

They're definitely using some antialiasing on polygonal edges (may even be 4xMSAA) but there's an awful lot of aliasing in the alpha textures so overall it looks quite the jag fest. Definitely has moments of repeatable slowdown in the trial which is unacceptable for such a graphically simplistic game and coupled with the buggy online its a pass for me. The base game is still Outrun 2 perfection but this is a pretty damn poor port job if you ask me.

Still,if you haven't got the game already its well worth $10 of anyone's money, it just should have been much, much better.

Well, the pc version was a pretty poor job as well. The load times even on my blazing fast rig take much longer than they should and it doesn't support rumble on the controller or force feedback on the wheel. And of course the online is dead. (though doesn't it have LAN play? hamachi should work then)

I heard this version only has the Outrun 2SP courses. If that's true the pc version has twice the amount of content as well as more music plus a perfect copy of the arcade version with the original menus, voices and credits. I'll stick with pc.

I just experienced that one bug where you're stuck in the invisible environment.

It was during an online match, but I was released from it's grasp after several seconds.

Just don't crash into the wall after making the first right while playing online.

Found a bug :(
Online game -> OutRun Mode
I can't get to stage 2, I'm flying in the air :(

It's happened to me as well :( The first time around, everything went flawlessly... on the second and third runs, for some reason the scenery disappears, and I end up bumping into invisible corners, not being able to reach the checkpoint.

Before I tried my fourth run... well, I decided to drop by NeoGAF and check if other people faced the same issue. Damn. :(

I guess the reason the bugs exist is because OutRun Online Arcade is actually greatly improved graphics-wise - the resolution isn't as high as the PC version, but the lighting is greatly improved - even on the PC, the only car that had a shadow was your own car, while in this game every car has a shadow, there's some new scenery here and there, there's even a track that didn't have the sun before that has it now, and so on...

Maybe they could have spent a little more time before putting it out, sure, but so far I've been bug-free and I gotta say I'm more than pleased with the game...

Does the PS3 version have this bug? I usually hold off on buying XBLA games at release because shit like this happens an awful lot, but I was willing to make an exception for Outrun. I guess it's a good thing Amazon didn't get it in "stock" today. I already bought the game 4 times (XBox, PSP, C2C Xbox, PC), which is insane. Maybe I should just pass on this one. :(

Nobody cares! You know, I'm typing this on a powerful PC that could run it like a breeze. It might even extend my penis size. But I'd still rather go in my lounge, sit on the sofa and play the 360 version. YOU need to deal with this.

:lol Like a Passing Breeze amirite.

I've only really seen some slowdown on Hearts mode. Perhaps the 360's 1080p setting is causing some issues?

I popped in the Xbox C2C since I hadn't checked it out in a while. Still looks pretty good, but man, the lack of AF makes the road turn into a blurry mess just a few yards ahead of your car. Also, the colors don't quite 'pop' as much as on the 360 version.

time attack under 4'30 is just not possible. I only counted 12 people on the MT Tuned leaderboards that have it. the highest i can get is 4'36

definately better than those grabs.
IQ is sharp and clean and the game still menages to look good, thanks to its visual style and appealing aesthetics. No bugs for me yet.

Shame outrun 2 tracks are missing, i liked some of them much better than C2C ones (Greece especially, was just gorgeous).

Game is a blast as it always was; i haven't tried it with the FF wheel yet but unless they really messed things it should be arcade racing nirvana.

There was no bug today and there was no one hanging at the start line. Maybe there is a connection between the bug and people stand still at the start?

EDIT: Yes, that's it.
Someone is not driving and stands at the startline (suckers!) -> bug
Everyone's driving -> no bug

I demand a 30 seconds-kick-function!

achievements not showing up at all for me, just keeps saying i have to play the game and when i get to the point where the first achievement should trigger nothing happens. :/

Blasphemous. Unless you want to use the Euro mixes.

:lol

I was just curious, as I like listening to my own music while playing arcade racers. Plus in my defence I've never played Outrun at any great length so I am immune to the soundtrack love, at least for now.

Is that a screen grab from the game with no mods? Because I was sure that was the case...

The funny thing in that screen grab is that the Ferrari doesn't have a shadow while the van does...

Shit, tell me about it - good job getting that much, as I got 4'46, admittedly I hit the wall a few times, but I doubt that it would have cost me more than 16-17 seconds... I tried a few times before I went to bed last night to no avail...

And I also checked out the leaderboards to see how many people did this, and practically no one did - in most of the leaderboards it's only the number one person that beat it under 4'30, and just by a second or so, #2 and below are all too slow...

I love the game, but I've never played it hardcore for months on end or something like that to perfect each level, and it looks like only the super hardcore fans can nail this right now - I got a lot of practicing to do... :(

That makes perfect sense - I remember many many years ago when S0L or one of the other OutRun2 guys explained that once you pass a junction, the level you just raced through gets completely erased from the RAM to make space for the new one, which made it impossible for you to turn around - so yeah, if someone is standing at the start line while everyone else is racing ahead, I can see how that would cause the track to disappear for others...

No wonder I never experienced this - good job figuring it out man...
