People are making way too much out of these semi-potential lawsuits. Apple didn't mention Palm at all and simply said that they would protect their intellectual properties as needed. Blogs just kind of read between the lines and ran with it. Any company would, and is smart to, defend their IP's.
um actually they asked tim cook specifically about his thoughts on the pre and he responded by having his little patent lawsuit meltdown.

From the accounts that I've read, there was no mention of a specific device by Cook or the person who asked the question.

Q: "The Palm device seems to directly emulate the iPhone's innovative interface. Is that what you're referring to?"

A: "We don't want to refer to any specific companies, so that was a general statement. We like competition because it makes us better, but we will not stand for companies infringing on our IP."

Ok! I got it! No need to say it twice! :lol Meltdown isn't the word I'd use, but fine.

Now that's the first time I've seen the question posed to him in anything I've read. It seems to be a follow-up to another statement that came before it, where once again, Apple didn't mention the Pre specifically, and it was a blogger/reporter/writer who read into. But, at least I can see where the links to the Pre are coming from now.

I still think it's mostly much ado about nothing.

Funny; multitouch use counters their one-handed operation mantra. Personally, i wouldn't mind seeing them create new gestures that can allow the Pre to be used totally with one hand.

Probably been asked a dozen times already but when will the Palm Pre come out? My contract ends in the middle of March and I'm interested in getting one.

my bad opera mini was acting up. And you're right meltdown is perhaps a bit much but the guy seriously said we won't stand for it, lol.

I really wanted a Pre but I ended up needing a new phone ASAP, so I signed a new contract with verizon yesterday. Hopefully in 2 years all the BS exclusivity deals are dead.

The only phone whose exclusivity will be in question will be the iPhone since Apple won't be dropping the OS on a bunch of devices, unlike Android and the Palm WebOS, which will eventually be on a bunch of phones.

so i was all set to buy the new blackberry 8900 Curve this week but as an "existing" t-mobile customer and not a "new" customer they're gonna charge me $300 rather than $200. honestly, the new Curve isn't compelling enough for me to spend $300 on. so it looks like i'll be saving pennies for the Pre and take advantage of those "new" customer pricing and promotions sprint will offer me.

so is march 15 still the latest release date being thrown around?

finally, can someone summarize the negatives to the Pre? besides being exclusive to sprint? i can deal with the lack of a microSD slot, as 8GB will be enough for most of my needs. i don't really care for taking crappy video on my phone either. anyone know the battery capacity for the Pre?

edit: ok, it's 1150mAh which is ok, 1500mAh would have been better but would increase the phone's size.

Right now, last I saw the March 15 date was when they are shipping the phones to the stores, but not selling. More stocking up in advance.

A couple negatives I guess:

* Applications will be web apps. Not bad per say, but if people had access to the SDK they could build more sophisticated applications.
* No access to the SDK

Any others?
It has very few negatives, tons of positives.

The list of negatives and positives will like be more clear, and probably grow, once people actually get their hands on the device and can see its strengths and flaws first hand.

the small battery is going to be a big issue. the pre has an ARM Cortex A8 as well as a PowerVR accelerator. an absolute BEAST of a CPU and that 1150mAh battery will be a shortcoming. i hope i'm wrong.

Yeah I'm getting that feeling too. The 1150mAh battery isn't even enough for the Centro.

That "stocking up" theory is far from definite. From what I read, there are a series of interpretations about that date. Some say full blown launch, others say place holder date, ship date, soft release to sprint premier customers, etc. The May thing from Boy Genius Report struck me as something they pulled out of their ass as "more reasonable". They didn't really provide anything to back it up or contradict the document they posted with it that said March 15th. Unfortunately other sites have taken that bit and run with it out of context...

Also, at a Q&A today the Palm CEO dropped a few tidbits:

1) Palm will have a full functional app store but will not lock apps out... so you can download apps over the air from outside sites or transfer them to the phone.

2) He talked up the Sprint Simply Everything plan, but stopped short of indicating it was required. As such it's not newsworthy yet, but it certainly didn't sound promising for people who want a Pre but are clinging to their SERO plan.

3) Said investors had been told to prepare for a tough first 2 quarters as they prepared to get the Palm Pro out the door and got ready to launch the Pre. Not sure what their financial quarters are like, but that certainly didn't seem to indicate an imminent release.

4) Centro is the last palm OS device. After this everything will be either WebOS or Windows Mobile based.

5) No lawsuits from apple and no concern about patent issues.

The Sprint site for the Pre has been updated as well. It now includes tech specs which confirm the following features: PAM (Phone as Modem) tethering via wireless bluetooth connection and usb 2.0 cable. Also, MMS is enabled.

This phone sounds more promising with each passing day. Here's hoping it gets here soon with decent battery life.

Why do they refer to the PalmOS as being dead? WebOS is basically PalmOS 7.0. Seems retarded to me, but I guess they want to show they've shed their skin.

Because Palm is making the distinction between POS and WOS since the architecture is fundamentally different.

Yup.

It's basically they want a new start, which is understandable.

Personally, I never would look at Palm's stuff, but all of this "new" stuff around the Pre has me taking a second look at the company. Granted the WebOS could just be a big evolution of the PalmOS, but anything bad about PalmOS doesn't carry with them now really, at least to people like me who have never had a Palm.

You know, I hope Palm has a tremendous success with this little device (and all other products with this OS built into them). It's so slick and well thought trough. Rooting for the little guy I guess.

I'm absolutely loving the fact that this one still has a regular button keyboard, instead of an onscreen one.

Nice video, pretty much confirmed how I felt about the Pre. Gonna be picking this up and handing my iPhone 3G down to my sis.

Just seems to do everything right, the OS itself has consistently impressed me, the form factor is nice (particularly like the keyboard even though I'm more than happy with the iPhones keyboard).

Presumably because of the way it presents itself to the desktop OS it'll have no problems syncing with something like WMP.

It's Sprint only? I hate being a Verizon customer...
Pre or no Pre, Verizon is leagues better than Sprint. (I'm sure now that I say this a horde of people will defend the company, but) I've never known a single person who was happy with Sprint. Verizon or AT&T, depending where you use your phone the most, are the way to go.

But their phones suck, even prior to the Pre's announcement.

The Pre is looking NICE. Hopefully I can sell my HTC Pro for a good price and pick up the Pre when it comes out.

Well I've had both and there is no difference between them. They both have the CDMA tin can call quality. The difference is that Verizon is a little bit better in the boonies, but Sprint in turn doesn't sodomize your behind with a 9 inch dildo.

Wow.

Aaand there goes another worry I had.

Must.... Resist....

Seriously Palm is looking like they are going to fucking nail this phone. I hope developer support is strong when it gets released.

He speaks the truth. There is a reason why customers are bailing off of Sprint like rats leaving a sinking ship.

On a different note, at the Mobile World Congress there was a Pre running on GSM. Evidence it'll be available on other networks and in other countries very soon as well.

Guess I can be the first person you know. I rarely ever have any problems with sprint, and when/if I do, they seem to fix everything right away. I constantly get good deals on unlimited text for 2 phones for 5bucks, unlimited internet for 5bucks as well.

Customer Service has been top notch for me as well, everytime I call I always get a english speaking person, past couple times the people have lived in Canada(when I asked) and a couple from near me.

I'm very happy with the turn Sprint took with this CEO. I'll probably sell my Touch Pro since I got it for $100, figure I can get 300 for it and buy the Pre.

Question for people w/ Pre; How fast is the phone? TP is so slow, especially on text msgs, I can be on my second sentence and the phone is s ofar behind its ridiculous.

I've looked into tweaking my phone, but meh.

It's hard to answer that question since it's not out and no sites have been allowed to just play around without it just yet. The demo's they've conducted all look responsive and smooth though.

I agree with your assessment of Sprint's network and service though. I've been a customer for nearly 5 years now (after previously being on ATT and T-Mobile) and have no complaints. I've bounced around the country a lot in the last few years, and get great service almost everywhere, with the occasional exception coming in deeply rural areas.

T-mobile is cheap, but no good if you have a desire to use data services... ATT's data network is very limited as well and they don't have any coverage in many of the areas I frequent. Verizon may have a slightly better coverage than Sprint, but I'm not willing to pay the ridiculous rates they charge when I can just roam on their network with Sprint. I also have perks like free unlimited text messages, free picture messages, free nights starting at 6pm and 5 dollar unlimited data -- just for sticking by Sprint and paying my bills on time. My only gripe up until now was that they lacked high quality phones or that they lagged behind -- but with the Pre seems to be offering everything I'd want and then some.

Yea Sprint is finally coming around with worthwhile phones. I had a moto q b4 my touch pro and I really enjoyed my moto q. The touch pro was on my radar for awhile and I finally have it but man is it slow. Very annoying.

If the Pre is fast and responsive I'll jump on, really looking for a better phone than my TP hate to call it a let down but it is.

I'm really digging this phone. Too bad it's on sprint's sucky network. Hopefully I can score an unlocked gsm version though.

Looks like it's gonna be on vodafone in Europe....which is fine I guess. Hope it's sooner rather than later.
