I know the CIA supposedly doesnt do that thing they used to do anymore...

But maybe just this once its still okay?

Edit - oh shit advocating assasination at top of page lol

Multiple murders of random people. He's a literal serial killer.

He's a drug abuser himself, too. Shocker there.

From the article.

Vile, inhuman piece of shit.

My girlfriend is Filipino and since his election we haven't visited her family, nor will we for many, many years. Anecdotally, the local populace is actually quite scared of him, for good reason. The Davao death squads were an open secret for yearsUnless you're wealthy of course..

The maddening thing about his election is that the economy of the Philippines was actually on the rise. It's not currently great but it's trajectory is far better than it what it historically was in modern times and it is on track to becoming a developed nation quickly. He even had to create a new boogeyman ('drug problem') to try to get support of the average low-information Filipino as opposed to economic populism and the Filipinos are eagerly eating it up like a goddamn crack addict. It's absolutely maddening and frustrating.

Sorry to hear OP. I worry about my friend Steph, I know she hates the guy and she is as far from a user as anyone would be.

I went to the Philippines for two and a half weeks in January of this year, and as an outsider that was there a year ago, it seemed like nothing changed. Nothing seemed particularly worse, at least in the parts of the Philippines I was in (Metro Manila). I spoke with one of my cousins about what he thought, and he basically said all politics has killings there, and because the media is being controlled by the previous political leaders, they are conjuring up the bad press about him. Which, despite the reality that I think I'm seeing of Duterte being horrid, may also be somewhat true. At least the killings of Political rivals are.

I didn't challenge him too much, just wanted to hear him talk. Didn't seem like good timing to, and I got the impression he'd win an argument even if he was wrong. Anyways, he seemed overall positive and 'it is what it is, you shouldn't be involved in drugs anyways'

This is the attitude I usually encounter with Filipinos who live in the Philippines.

Conveniently all his political opponents are now involved with drugs.

There is a lot of misconception and disinformation here about our President and about the Philippines in general, heck someone even tried to suggest CIA doing an assassination (jeez)

I won't try to change people's mind, but being a Filipino whose been living here ( not in the gated subdivisions / villages) but in a typical barangay(town) for a good 40 years, I've seen every politicians broken promises, corruption and drugs money ruling the land.

At the end of day being a Filipino living in the Philippines, I'll just leave this here a quote by one of better President of Philippines (coincidentally very close to the Americans)

“I would rather have a government run like hell by Filipinos than a government run like heaven by Americans (or any other foreigners for that matter).

So you won't post any supporting facts at all, got it.

Way to support a mass-murderer.
Holy shit, that post reminds me of the people on Facebook! Whenever an Al Jazeera article gets posted about him, the commenters run to his aid and say stuff like that aka "This is false news, you don't know how bad the situation is. Duterte is the greatest president we've ever had."

I think they even called out a credited news site/reporter from the Philippines when they did the same thing on there too.

They were doing it one the news articles posted on the first page of this thread.

I think this might be the problem with your country, hell shouldn't be an option.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever read

are you're willing to elaborate your view on the current political climate?
from my perspective, it's an indisputable fact that these "purges" are horrific and cause extreme suffering
mind you, I don't wanna be one of those "go on ......." posters

Enjoy.

But China and Russia? Hell shouldn't be an option. If you prefer living in hell then please don't take us with you.

Duterte is rich by the way. What does that mean to you if you have lived for 40 years in a typical baranggay? I don't live in a gated village too so what now?

I admit voting for this psychopath last year, and I regret this every waking day of my life. The man is a complete nutcase and murderer. I hate him with every fiber of my being, but I hate myself even more for being dumb enough to believe that he would actually not kill anyone.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine a president would be capable of such violence. More than anything else, I am afraid for everyone who geys victimized by this "fake drug war" and never ending police brutality.

Hold up, you voted for a guy known for his extra-judicial killings when he was a mayor thinking he wouldn't be doing the same thing as the president?

You know, the guy who had election posters like this?

This is a real campaign poster I saw on my island. People actually think they can solve poverty and crime this way.

Also, you voted for a guy who has bragged about wanting to join in on a gangrape/murder.

At least he regrets it. Unlike another person who posted in this thread

Playing devils advocate here, but generally curious. How is the drug problem now? Better?

Most of the people being killed are the drug users themselves, so yeah I guess killing thousands of addicts might make a dent when your rate of drug use is already lower than the global average. This is like asking if killing illegal immigrants would make the illegal immigration "problem" better.

nice shithole of a country that you want to perpetuate until the end of time. I'm Filipino too but I gotta thank the stars that I'm sane. what a dumb quote.

It would be like solving our North American opioid epidemic by killing all the addicts.

Wooooooooooooooooow.

Hope you don't have any enemies that decide you are involved with drugs somehow.

Yeah when I went and visited in around December I only met one person who was against him. Everyone else thinks he is keeping everyone safe by getting rid of all the evil drug users...

I even worked with Filipinos in the UK who were fully behind him "keeping their kids safe from drug pushers"

I spoke with EU hostel owners and all of them said the previous government was corrupt and hes definitely cleaning it up and making it better.

mental.

I'm glad that post from last night got some responses. I read it, facepalmed, and was itching to type up a response, but I've been laid up with food poisoning and decided "Whatever, someone else will get to it, need to go back to sleep."
"So many misconceptions and lies about Duterte, but don't expect me to point them out to you." Which doesn't make sense anyway. If he had pointed out any one thing as a lie and we went and found reports and stories proving it was true, he would just dismiss it as 'fake news' anyway. So why not point out what we are supposedly getting wrong about Duterte?

Same shit that happens in Turkey really, nothing can be done if the vast majority of population willingly support psychopaths in power.

Trying to reason with a Duterte supporter is like trying to break down a brick wall with a toothpick.

I have no intentions of visiting the Philippines while this idiot is in office. He and his supporters can fuck off.

Hate to minimize this but I wonder if the rich folks on drugs in the Philippines are getting killed too. Or is it just in the poorest communities.
Think I already know the answer.

Have any of the drug lords who are actually running these operations been killed yet? or are they still killing kids, dealers, and users?

The excuse is always that the big drug lords are tied to corrupt politicians so he can't move on them without consequences and he can't move on the corrupt politicians because they threaten him with assassination. Which makes zero sense. This man has the power to grant extra-judicial killings and jail his political opponents, but all the sudden his hands are tied now? Bullshit.

But I thought people elected him because he was bringing an end to corruption, by force if necessary. So basically, business as usual except now with more bodies?

That's what I always ask my friends. And the answer I get in return is, "But you see the drug trade finances those corrupt politicians. And they can't take down the politicians directly so they have to go after their money." Which, again, makes no sense considering the amount of power he is exercising.

seriously, with the amount of power that Filipinos are ok with him having over citizens, they should be ok with him strolling into these politicians' homes and locking them up himself. Right? Everyone knows who is corrupt. Duterte has unchecked power he could do any he wants to them. It should be a match made in heaven.

however will all I have to say on Duterte. Never should the US intervene with force like some are advocating here. Those days are done, we know nothing good comes of it.

Fuck that shit. Last time it was run like hell like Filipinos, we got Marcos.

Foreign influence hasn't been a thing for close to 50+ years now. This is all 100% done and permitted by Filipinos.

It was never bad in the first place. The drug use rate in the Philippines is comparable to a country in similar size/demographic/wealth. It's not an outside outlier or anything,or even close to being an epidemic like what Duterte and his supporters would have you believe.

Think I already know the answer.

I believe there was an actress who dealt with drugs, was a pusher herself and was put in prison for that. Can't remember the name but she's out of prison now, despite her offenses being non-bailable ones.
