The Portal 2 Spoiler Thread of Lunacy

Vinterbird said:
During HL2 they went to E3 to demo the game, not announce it. But yeah, this year is DOTA2. Which they are going to push hard, and especially hard in Europe.

Next year will either be CS2 or Ep3/HL3. Perhaps with a side-dish of Portal 2 expansion.

I can see Episode Three being bundled with Counter-Strike 2 (I would lose my shit). A Portal 2 expansion is unlikely, though, as if Valve were to create more SP content it would be DLC and offered for free on Steamworks platforms.

I'm actually curious. Myself and several others have mentioned that as soon as they saw the moon, they instinctively shot a portal at it, even if they didn't think it would actually work.

How many people did this happen for? And what kind of crazy brainwashing did they use to make us do that?

^^^ Yeah, I shot at it for the hell of it.

Totally digging the new ending song.

Unlike the first game, portals seem instant. Sure it may have been a gameplay fix to prevent you from shooting portals while hanging out the edge of one, but it makes the moon thing make more sense.

It's the first thing I saw over the course of 2 games that wasn't inside. I didn't care if I was shooting a portal at the fucking moon if it meant escape from Aperture's labs.

:: raises hand ::

I was really exhausted, so intense moment + white surface + panic = shoot portal at moon.

We've yet to see Valve do big substantial expansion like DLC. So far they've done smaller stuff like the general maintaneance of TF2 and the episodes. And Valve has said there will be new game content DLC for Portal 2, so the grand question is what Valve will take money for, and what it won't in terms of this game.

It's a pretty simple trick. They reveal it in the optimal spot for eye focus, it does an extremely quick blink in order to get your attention and the game audio pressures you into doing something, instinctively. They are really good at hiding it, and doing it so subtle that it works.

Probably everyone. I certainly did it. There really wasn't much of a choice given Wheatley was about to have his sick way with you.

Just one question. Was it just me or were some of the puzzles that were shown at E3 and stuff nowhere to be seen? Are they just in co-op or something? I haven't touched co-op yet, waiting on the friend I'm going to play it with.

The ones I'm talking about were this mainly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGlyQmmvj0w&feature=relmfu

In fact the "Pneumatic Diversity Vent" was nowhere to be seen.

I know that the excursion funnel was actually used more or less vertabrim but with the setting changed around (Wheatley added infinite pits of death)

I figured it out as soon as I clicked, but I clicked accidentally, not thinking that would be it :(

I saw the moon come out, and it took a second for me to realize the enormity of what was in front of me.

It was obvious it would work. Cave Johnson mentioned that the 'portal surface' goo was made from moon rocks and your view is automatically aimed at the moon just as a tear in the roof brings it into view.

That said, it was still awesome as hell.

the camera locks on to the moon view so it was fairly obvious

Loved the bit where they had you fling into a monitor if you didn't have the wall set up yet. Wheatley's comments about it were awesome.

I'm not saying it wasn't, it's just that I FIRED a Portal before any logical processes had occurred. Just...immediately.

Question:

Did anyone else ever feel sorry for Wheatley after his "I'm sorry" speech? He, like GLADOS, was not designed to be and was not inherently an evil AI. It's just the lust for testing and science corrupted him while connected to the Aperture Science mainframe thing. I suspect he will play another role in a later Valve game.

Oh, actually. Did anyone get a massive Halo 1 vibe from his ending scene? I was half expecting 343 to appear and float by or something. They also did the same "look up, down, at this thing" bollocks Bungie do each game. Was weird.

I know what you mean. Didn't even look to see what portal I had to use, just shot at the moon and it worked. I didn't know it would work but I didn't know what else to do.

I got a Halo 1/3 vibe from the long/slow ride to Wheatley towards the end, when you see the labs falling apart.

DOTA2 wont make the end of the year. I refuse to believe it. Even Portal 2 fell to Valve Time. It's unavoidable. It will consume DOTA2 like it consumes every Valve project.

But I do hope you're right. If Valve have any kind of presence at E3 I think they'll be pushing DOTA2 above all. After all, Portal 2 is out and that is their next big game.

I dont really know what Valve's E3 history is though. Dont they often let E3 go by without really revealing or announcing anything?
Why you gotta be like that bro! :(

You raise a good point. I can't see the DLC being significant, though. Time will tell!

I think for me it was because the moon is bright and the game logic says bright surfaces mean you can shoot portals at them, so I automatically shot at it.

You're pointed straight at it, you're being pressured to do something immediately, and the entire game has been training you to know that white surfaces are portal-friendly. It's also planted in your head earlier in the game when Cave mentions that the white gel is made from moon rocks.

I kinda shot at the moon without really thinking of the implications

and then when the team rocket star thing appeared on the moon, I just instantly started grinning and let out a good laugh once I realised what was going to / had happened.

Portal 2 still looks great even if it isn't at the level Half Life 2 was in the graphics department (at launch)

Seconding the start of Chapter 9 as one of my favourite moments. The writing and comedic timing in this game are just sublime.

Makes perfect sense to me, I shot instinctively (probably due to all of this training). The ending was fucking awesome. No doubt about it.

The Antialiasing just looks DAMN GOOD in this game.

In one of the later levels I remember seeing out of the corner of my eye someone run out an exit while Wheatley was rearranging the room.. was it P-body? Did anyone else see that?

I think my favorite lines from the game are terminally ill, crazy Cave Johnson talking about "when life hands you lemons, don't make lemonade, burn their damned house down with the lemons!" and potato GlaDOS is enthusiastically cheering along his rant.
Yeah, agreed. Johnson talking about lemonade was one of the few times I laughed.

two more. i have a bad habit of photo safari'ng my way through PC games and Steam's new feature doesn't make it any easier to resist... which left me in the end with 574 memories

They're not in co-op. One of the dev commentary bubbles near the end mentions these though.

We had a bunch of levels that used crusher panels in ways that made the test chambers more dangerous. After showing some of these levels in press demos, we got feedback that viewers were getting the impression that Portal 2 was going to be too difficult, since players would have to time events such as running or falling through a portal while avoiding getting hit by a deadly crusher. We ultimately decided to save these crushers for the escape, when Wheatly tries to hold you off.

Now that single player is finished I guess its time to just wait for DLC. Not really interested in replaying it atm.

How am i supposed to play the dev commentary in the co-op maps ? at first i thought it was a single player thing (since its under single player) but i remember i arrived at a point where i couldnt advance on my own anymore ?
