Mystic Nights being the rarest, most expensive PS2 game is hard to argue against when you look at prices for the game on Ebay.

Mystic Nights was one of the handful of PS2 games developed by South Korean studios. A title that was a commercial failure and never saw a release outside of South Korea. There are few scraps of information about the game itself.

There's not even a wikipeida page for Mystic Nights. Googling it, my first search result is on the TV show Mystic Knights - knights with a K.

Amongst the esoteric, obscure survival horror games I've covered on the channel, Mystic Nights might be at the top. At least on the availability front beyond emulation, which I used here.

While not quite the most out-there title I've played on the channel, Mystic Nights is full of peculiar, oddball design decisions. While it is a survival horror title in its foundation, it has many elements that detour from the norm. The combat can be tedious and its balancing is out of whack for stretches of the game. While a 2005 PS2 release, it looks more like a launch title for the system. The plot of the game can be all over the place in what it's going for.

And yet...I couldn't put Mystic Nights down. I had to see what was awaiting for me on the next floor, or the around the next corner. There's some inspired enemy design that pulls heavy from familiar sources, yet makes them their own. There are memorable character with moments that had me intrigued of what would come next. It's full of jank and rough around the edges, but you can see the love and care the developers put into it.

Even now, I still have a hard time putting a finger on why I found Mystic Nights so engrossing. It's very much a game where the sum is greater than its parts. No doubt the rarity of such a game plays a role in the intrigue around it. A bit of a forbidden fruit.

If you love to delve into the deep treasure trove of survival horror titles, Mystic Nights is quite the find. I wouldn't quite call it a hidden gem, or a must play by any stretch. But it sure is a memorable one, and one worth being aware of. Whether you play it yourself, or enjoy it vicariously through this video.

Rarity and Background

Mystic Nights is considered one of the rarest and most expensive PlayStation 2 games, developed by a South Korean studio and released only in South Korea. The game is an obscure title with little information available online, making it hard to categorize within the broader gaming community.

Gameplay Mechanics

The gameplay of Mystic Nights incorporates unconventional survival horror elements, diverging from traditional mechanics. Combat can be tedious, and the player experiences clunky movement and aiming controls, which detracts from the overall experience, although some players find the combat characteristics unique.

Story and Characters

The narrative revolves around Bruce, who is drawn back to the Military Institute of Strategic Research after receiving a letter from a troubled past acquaintance. The relationships between characters reveal themes of betrayal, love, and loss, leading to complex dynamics as they navigate the facility filled with strange enemies.

Enemy Design

One of the strengths of Mystic Nights is its enemy design, which draws inspiration from various horror franchises while introducing bizarre and unique creatures. The variety of monsters keeps the game engaging, as players anticipate what bizarre enemy will come next.

Leveling System

Mystic Knights features a unique weapon leveling system tied to enemy kills, which forces players to grind early on, particularly before critical boss encounters. This could lead to frustrating pacing issues, making the gameplay feel tedious at points.

Multiplayer Elements and Collectibility

Despite its limitations, Mystic Nights includes a fan-created multiplayer mode that adds an interesting layer to gameplay. The game's rarity has made it a collector's item, with prices on eBay reaching thousands, leading to discussions on its legacy within the horror genre.

i forgot this game existed, I think it's clunky because at the time, each studio wants to make standard.
the artwork is cool btw, and the graphic is nice, though a bit rough.

EDIT:
tried it through PCSX2, well, the control is awful XD and the camera borderline annoying
but the graphic and art is very nice, might be try it again someday when got the mood
