The *REAL* Official Phantasy Star Portable thread without bullshit

That's what I'll be doing.
PSP is the bigger surprise, since I was really expecting it to suck balls.
But PS0 is the one I'm looking forward to the most. I've always preferred PSO over PSU, basically all aspects of it. PSP's combat isn't really pushing the same buttons for me.

The camera and controls in PS0 made the game a real chore for me, from what I tried. PSP surprised me with the generous helpings of control options, quick easy slide menus, making it far more playable and enjoyable. I quite like movement being more fluid as well.

And of course with Adhoc party how much easier it is to get some online stuff going since i havent got wifi working with my DS at all.

Am surprised Sega picked PSU to do a portable version of over a full Blue Burst port, but I guess PS2>PSP was easier in the long run.

Been playing this a crapton - about 20 hours now - have a level 45 person that's a level 3 or 4 gunmaster. I've too obsessive-compulsive to try any A / S free missions to get good weaponry because I've been doing all of the C / B missions just so I can complete them all. So I have some really not-so-hot weaponry (maybe one S-ranked sword when my whole action pallete consists of two dualies, couple of rifles, a grenade launcher and said sword w/ pistol).

Does anyone have a go-to SUV weapon choice? I'm using one that shoots a fairly limited-range three pronged laser in front of me. Kinda crappy. I kinda hate how I'll initiate my SUV attack and it'll take 10 seconds for my character to get the weapon and fire... which by that time the enemy is out of range.

Alright, cleared off all of the C rank free missions available to me so far in the GC and Parum. And I've started on the B ranks, just for the fuck of it. Level 14 now.

So, it seems like ranged bullet photon arts cap at 10, yes? What about the melee PAs? I've got one at 15 so far, and it's still accruing exp.

Depends on your class. PSUPedia is down or I'd link you to a chart. The max any of them can go up to is 30. Note that most melee photon arts on two-handed weapons get a 3rd combo at level 21.

Kind of works like this. All photon arts cap at level 30. You just have to be in the right class to do it.

Ranger > Bullets cap at Lv 20 > Skills and Tech at Lv 10
Hunter > Skills cap at Lv 20 > Bullets and Techs at Lv 10
Force > Techs at Lv 20 > Bullets and Skills at Lv 10

Gunmaster > Bullets cap at Lv 30
Fightmaster > Skills cap at Lv 30
Forcemaster > Techs at Lv 30

... and then I don't remember about Acromaster and Protomaster (is that what they're called?) They have their own little chart that I don't remember right off the bat.

Also, there is some differentiation between attack and support techs. For example I am a Protranser and my attack techs can go to 20 but my support techs can only go to 10.

Something I didn't know going in was that unlike the console game where Resta level 1 will heal you and your teammates a little, Resta in this version won't heal other people until level 11, so it will only ever be able to use it on myself unless I change classes. Has anyone gotten Giresta yet? If so is it any different?

I just use the most expensive concentrated fire one at the time.

EDIT: Noticed the attack skills change in appearance and have additional button presses when leveled past a certain point.

Is this game worth playing in single player mode? Unlike Resistance:Retribution, PSP does not support *real* online.

Its ok single player if you like that kind of thing...but like most RPGs that have some sort of multiplayer component, MP is where its at.

I beat De Ragan from Parum today as am level 56 human acromaster. The first S rank mission I beat, and I've got two S rank doubleswords. I'm having a blast!

I can't get over the art and character design.. guess I'll stick to Monster Hunter?

I don't want to really come into a PSPortable thread to bag on it, but I just hope everyone who loves this game checks out Monster Hunter Freedom too!

The music of PSPortable is great though..

With Ad-hoc party, you'll see a rush of people when Freedom Unite hits.

Had a good commute to my doctor's and back (siiiiiiick) and gained about 5 or 6 levels. Wiped out once on a story mission, sadly. Maybe it's time I start updating my equipment a bit, at least by dropping those enhancements onto my armor slots...

Uhhh after 30+ hours into the game I'm quite sick of every music track in this game. Nothing is as memorable as the music in PSO. It's not bad, just nothing that I would want to download and listen away from the game.

Just beat that fucker that wiped me out last time. Gained 3 job levels, and stopped at 10. Is that the current max?

Edit - Yeah, PSU's music is a disappointment after PSO. Some of the best was in Episode III. Pity it was wasted on such a boring game. The classic PS remixes in Eps II and IV, however, are amazing.

Yeah, not sure what happened either, since PSU and PSO both had the same composer. Should at least sound somewhat similar. Maybe its because most of the areas you explored in PSO had been deserted/were mysterious, while PSU is mostly areas that have already been colonized, just had some trouble with infected wildlife/haywire machines.

One of the PSO tracks made it into the game though, I know I heard one early on when talking to Viv.

Yessss, finally hit Fightmaster Lv 10 tonight. I also have 6 Lv 30 skills, four more to go!

... time to start on my Forcemaster now.

Yes, sir.

I had the realization tonight that the Achievements/Rewards system in this game is what is keeping me playing. I am really glad they included it and it's funny how it really extends the life of the game for me. I find myself wanting to get all job classes to Lv 10, level up 10 of each photon arts to Lv 30, clear all the missions, etc. just to get the achievements for it.

... Honestly, I think without that this game would not hold my appeal for as long as it has. By having the game "force" you into playing the other classes, by the appeal of achievements, you get to experience the game in a different manner than just being a hunter/ranger/force without creating a whole new character to do so.

I think I have a total of about 35 hours between my two characters.

Wow, after seeing how long it takes to gain even one level in the Advanced Classes, I'm assuming you've logged in a ton of playtime!

All: is it worth trying out Ad-Hoc Party or, as a long-time PSO fan, am I'm just going to be severely let down? Is there always a decent amount of people online or not?

I'm loving PSU Portable, but would be obsessed if I had a good means of playing with other people.

Most of the people in the topic (and at the online topic) are up for it. And if you just go to World J room 50 and set up a room, people will usually pile in quickly.

EDIT: Well...theres still the GAF PSO Blue Burst topic availible, and I dont think our characters are gone. Anyway, most of us PSO fans who never played beyond Ep I were amazed at some of the EP II environments.

I just bought a PSP and Phantasy Star Portable off Amazon today. Once I get set up and level up a bit I will play with all of you guys. I am so excited!

Yeah I'm at 38 hours for my main character. The trick is this: when doing story missions be sure that you are using a Master class because you get a shit load more of mission points than the regular missions. When I beat the final story mission alone in the game that was good for one complete level up.

Unless you are switching classes up a lot, you should be able to reach your first Master class by at least Chapter 3. From that point on, just make sure whenever you are doing a story mission to switch back to a master class to help gain more mission points after completing them. Use regular Hunter/Ranger/Force classes when doing extra missions, and save the good points for your Master classes.

Ad-Hoc party I think works surprisingly well. It's really easy to chat to your teammates through your PS3, and I never found it inconvenient to look up for a second, or pick up the controller and punch out a message in the middle of a game. The first few times on Ad-Hoc Party are a bit cumbersome because it's all in Japanese, but once you get familiar with it, it's real easy to use. I've only had a couple of games drop out because of connection issues, but most of the time the game runs flawlessly with little to zero lag.

Honestly, I think the game is good enough to stand on its own even without online play. I would highly recommend buying the game for single player alone. You can have NPCs in your party to have a full four person crew, which is nicer than a game like Monster Hunter where you're stuck soloing all missions if you're not doing multiplayer.

You do know you can download the demo off of the PSN, create a character, and then transfer that character over to the full game with everything you've gained, right?

GET STARTED TODAY! :D

Edit: Nevermind, I read too fast and noticed that you got the PSP and Phantasy Star together from Amazon. Oh well, just read this thread with anticipation then! Hope you enjoy your new PSP. Be sure to sign up for the PlayStation Network and download demos and stuff if you get bored of Phantasy Star from time to time... although since owning the game I've logged over 40+ hours and haven't touched another PSP game since then! :lol I still need to finish Jeanne D'Arc and Prinny Can I be the Hero. Both are badass games BTW that I highly recommend. That is if you can pull yourself away from Phantasy Star.

My favourite track in PSO:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwIDdmUczqM

Episode II is so underrated. It's a shame no one played it.

Oh man you a DRUNK. That track got on my damn nerves playing so much EpII. :lol

NOTHING, nothing beats the Mines music: "Empty Space and out of control"
Whenever I would ever feel like doing some random playing, I would always do the Mines and crank the music up loud! :D Good times. I miss PSO, but not really. PS:P is a great game.

.... Damn triple post! Sorry everyone. I read threads backwards and kept on hitting reply after seeing new comments. :p

Forget that. It's all about Mother earth of dishonesty (forest) and Growl from the depths of the earth (Dragon Battle).

Also as much as I like PS:P, I still think the PSO Dragon looks cooler. I dont know if its the boss intro or what, but it just seems like a much more arrogant monster. That and how many dragon bosses have you see that actually dig underground?

Forgot I had a 20giger. No way to get wifi with it and tunnel at the same time. :\

Hmmm, for me, I'd have to go with this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roCq...013FD7AFE&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=7
as my favorite stage theme from I&II...

and this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhIOFiC8aOM&feature=PlayList&p=6CF6910B30F50DAF&index=14
as my favorite boss battle theme...

Oh yeah, the versus theme. Wasnt this theme used for something else too?

Image of a hero (character creation) was great as well:

PSU character create theme is a nice successor.

A VR Temple in Ep II, no?

Was it the one with all the screens? Its been awhile.

Also off-topic, but whats up with PSIII seemingly like a drop in quality presentation wise from II? Your characters dont even pop up during battle.

EDIT: Final section of " Can still see the light" is great.

Why cant 20gb PS3s do this anyway? Arent all PS3s supposed to be able to link with a PSP?

No wireless internet connection on the 20GB. You have to hard wire it, but then your PSP can't communicate to the PS3 wireless. You can link up your PS3 to the PSP through USB to transfer files and such, but you need to communicate thorugh wireless connection if you want to do this.

Have been playing this game all wrong as a Ranger, when the real fun lies in the awesome Hunter blade photon arts combos!

Bit annoying you cant use Technics without equipping a wand, the game doesnt go out of its way to tell you that either. Also people mentioning SUV's and Nanoblasts? Do I unlock these in the story mode or something?

Wrd. Getting the timing down just right with each weapon also lets you do critical hits. So you can attack the enemies weak spots for MASSIVE DAMAGE. :lol

SUVs and Nanoblasts are for Casts/Beasts only. You can also attach Technics to mags and staffs too!

The only thing I don't like about Cast is that they can't use special clothes you pick up : /, I just got an Illuminus Grab and I can't use it damn it.

CASTs use parts instead of clothes, no?

Reading the manual helps. :)

Yep they do, and I can't transfer items between my saves, would be nice if you could, I remember doing that all the time on PSO on the GC haha.

Yeah, your best bet would be to trade with one of us via Ad-Hoc Party, switch characters, and have us give the items back to you. Pretty annoying.

You can't drop items in multiplayer mode, hence no trading. I think the only things you are allowed to drop are consumables, like healing items. Sucks, I know. But in a way it does prevent "helping" or cheating by giving low level characters stuff they shouldn't have. But that's kind of the fun of having a new character, IMO.

Oh I know, I still think they should let you trade stuff like clothes that you can't use if you are a certain race or something, or might they fall under consumables?

Why doesn't Sony release Ad-hoc Party for the US? It would cost next to nothing in terms of resources.

I think its still in beta in japan (we are using the beta version atm) so that could be why. Hopefully they will release it in North America after the beta phase is done. You'd think it would be done by now anyway... doesn't seem incomplete or anything function-wise.

EDIT: Anyway i'll probably host a few games when I get back. Nothing too late in the day though.

Glad that the missions dont make level differences too obvious (except during boss battles).
