The Revenant is an excellent movie

I'm not certain on that part but given the emphasis on use of natural lighting and some articles I've read it would certainly be in the realm of possibility. Unfortunately, I've not seen a definitive statement on that.

The bear is fully CG in every scene.

I thought it was massively bloated for how little Iñárritu has to say.

The Malick and Tarkovsky influenced images were at times pretty stunning and the score stood out here and there. The climax and final shot were ridiculous.

Lmao, I would be ok with this.

I thought it was alright. Photography and acting were top notch. There just wasn't enough here for me. It's almost like they were trying to make a Mallick film but without a script. And halfway through they decided that just leaving his ass to die wasn't enough so they gave him a son so they could put little flashbacks of his native american family here and there to give him reason to push on. I loved Amores Perros and 21 grams.

Saw it tonight and it was fantastic. Will win awards for cinematography, costume design, best supporting actor. Leo should be nominated but won't win.

Disagreed with the criticism, thought this film was perfect.

I'm not the biggest Iñarritu fan, but I was blown away by this film.

It's already one of the best, if not THE best, revenge movies I've seen.

Kind of over the top in a distracting and funny way in many many facets,
and far too long. The middle had too much repetition and was a bit of a slog.

However, Norman Reedus' acting was crazy good. I felt feelings. Tom Hardy was Mad Max and Bronson with a Texan accent (I think? Texan here). He was very good and idiosyncratic and engaging, but I wasn't blown away. I don't think his role was to do so though. Fantastic nature imagery, and the action scenes were so good.

Can not wait for Leo and Hardy.

Now let talk about the current movie here people.

What should I go to the hateful8 or the big short.

Best movie of the year. I think it's a Masterpiece. Leo getting that Oscar and Tom Hardy should get one too.

I don't know, who's running against Leo this time? Fassbender and Redmayne? No clear winner yet, maybe he'll have a shot.

Hardy is a tough one, Mark Rylance is the clear favorite here.

I concur, it's a great movie, story wasn't particularly engaging, but the acting and visuals more than made up for that.

Much better than Hateful 8, which I thought was very poor.

wouldn't really recommend the movie, personally. Simple narrative, tedious pacing, flat characters, mostly good but not great acting - uh, pretty to look at? But lots of people apparently like it, so eh

Tarkovsky, where?

Malick films have scripts? :P

I thought it was a great movie, and Leo did extremely well. I hope he gets the oscar, of course, but I'm a little upset that he might get the oscar for this role over some of his better performances that had thick competition. I think Leo should have won an oscar for Django. I thought his performance in that as a support was better than this movie even though it was definitely oscar worthy as a lead here. He just has comparable comp this year, and since he's due he'll get it, and that's the only reason why in my opinion.

It was alright, but at some point it felt like it was dragging on for too long.

Was kinda hoping the ending would be Tom Hardy's character living a happy life in Texas and Leo's character just showing up at his door and shooting him point blank.

Glad to hear it's well received as I'll be seeing this movie with my father this weekend. He's an outdoorsmans type so doesn't see many movies, but I think this is one we can both enjoy.

Going today. It seems like a movie I would make if I had the chance to make the perfect movie for myself.

Bloody torn on this movie - the cinematography was simply superb. Some of those tracking shots had my jaw on the ground. Hardy's performance, Gleeson's, top notch as per usual. But Leo ...I'd agree with a poster above, middle of the ground. Some scenes, such as when he's speaking in native, is superb. The others, his English scenes? Not so much. Not Academy material, that's for sure.

Hard one overall - enjoyed it, but also didn't... Might need another viewing to really get a grasp on it I think

was quite good yes , cinematography was really nice too

lol , poor Leo will prob not get the oscar again but gd he did good in this

In Dark Knight nobody could hear him.
In Mad Max he didn't say anything.
In Revenant nobody could understand him.

It seems like there are 2 different kinds of people - those who can understand Hardy and those who can't. I've never had a problem with it myself but I read the opposite often enough to believe it. Maybe it's because I'm British.

Malick films have scripts? :P

They have huge scripts. I think Mallick works the opposite way in that he shoots way more than he eventually uses. He finds the movie during the filming and editing. This seemed like they literally had to add the revenge stuff with his son since they were too scared of making a movie that was no dialogue. If you actually just made it a biopic of hugh glass with the captured by native americans, pirate, bear attack, and revenge stuff, I feel like it would be a lot more entertaining.

Planning to see it this weekend. January has been pretty great for me movie-wise; Star Wars, Hateful Eight, and soon to be this movie. I think the last movie I went out to see before January was either Inside Out or Mad Max.

I agree with this 100%. The revenge aspect was boring.

It's funny because I assume the people that can't understand him in this movie are non-Americans. He was easily understandable in The Revenant but I guess if you're not used to such an accent you could have trouble understanding it. Anyway, I've never had a problem understanding him in any movie.

Does the music stand out in any way? I noticed Ryuichi Sakamoto's name on the preview and i love that guy.

On it's own, it's awesome. With the movie, sub-par; some really campy cues. Getting Bryce Dessner to compose some additional stuff was a good choice, his input is the best part of it outside of the main theme.

Saw the movie yesterday, really enjoyed it. Slow as all get out and that hurt it especially in the second half, but it's a gorgeous movie and I really enjoyed the characters. Don't get the people complaining about flat characters. Leo was pretty one dimension, but Hardy and even Gleeson were great characters.

CGI animals were bullshit, though, sorry. They looked pretty bad now and looking back in 10 years they're going to look downright awful.

You're the first person I've seen criticize that aspect of the film (cgi animals)

Not saying you're wrong I'm pretty hard to please in that area as well

I thought it was excellent, and in the same visual spirit as Terrance Malicks the New World.

Leo brought it hard, and Tom Hardy continues to be one of my favorite actors of his generation.

And I didn't care for Birdman.

I think the specific vibe of the film hurt it doubly. Intensely beautiful landscapes, constant shots of incredible nature, gritty and painfully realistic humans/expressions, and then CGI animals. Was just weird that they opted to go for that, even though I understand why they had to (with the bear, anyways).

I liked it, but I just didn't buy Leo as a father. In truth regardless of the beard etc, dude still looks like a baby face when all is said and done.

Good flick for about 2/3 but they lost me after he fell off that cliff with the horse. Just went downhill after that, literally. (Did this really happen? If yeah then I'm mind blown)

But my biggest problem was the music... what the fuck, he went to all this trouble to shoot a realistic looking movie with natural light and puts some cheesy ass music over it. Makes no sense at all. The lack of soundtrack makes everything so much more stressful no need for some orchestra. I had no problem with the music itself, it was pretty alright but really not fitting with what they tried to achieved.

Leo was really into it damn, must have been hell.

Overall pretty much what I expected but I still had hopes for something a little more.

That was when the movie jumped the shark for me. I couldn't get past that. If that's what actually happened, then the following events were impossible

Hugh Glass actually did survive a bear attack and crawl back 200 miles to Fort Kiowa to find Fitzpatrick who left him for dead.

Did he ride a horse off a cliff?? I doubt it. lol.

Incredible film. Give Leo the Oscar, and maybe even Tom Hardy too. Damn.

Bear scene was insane, as was the opening. Almost a full tracking shot for he majority of the intro (I'm sure a lot of unseen cuts).
