The Rise and Fall of Max Payne

I enjoyed 3 the most. Because it literally shows you everything you did before means dick. Ironically I feel the complete opposite when it comes to the ME series. Also my username has nothing to do with bullet time.

I really like 3 as well, but as someone who spent at least a third of my life in Brazil, the depiction of Sao Paulo as Miami on steroids (there are no palm trees over there!) and the use of Portuguese voice actors for the Brazilian parts was very distracting. Solid 3P shooter, though.

Max Payne 3 wasn't a Max Payne game to me.

It had none of the noir vibe of the first two games. It just became another rockstar game.

Give it back to Remedy please

I'm not quite sure I understand your question. I went to Rio for the Olympics, hoping to watch Phelps shred another set of records and had a great time, as did the other 87% of foreign visitors (per the official survey by the IOC) who, in spite of the media's ridiculous sensationalism, had a great time and stated they'd like to visit again. I've been back a couple of time since then. Vastly superior to the London Olympics, where I somehow ended in the Village with the wrong ticket or Beijing, where nobody knew anything, not even the local workers.

If you're referring to the 2016 SEGA game, that was awesome but not awfully representative.

This is the first time I hear somebody praising the Rio Olympics.

Crazy how different things are when you talk to people who've actually been there, huh? All Olympic Games are money-losing shitshows (I've been to a bunch, hopefully will be in Tokyo next year as well), but as for the event itself, the overwhelming majority of visitors had a great time, as the surveys suggest. Granted, those surveys are often biased - most Americans consider the 1996 Olympics a success and there was a freakin' bomb attack smack in the middle of Centennial Park.

The only people who suffered any major setback were Ryan Lochte and those other three US swimmers, who lied about being mugged when in fact they had trashed a gas station while drunk - his tearful apology before Oprah notwithstanding, I'm sure he didn't enjoy losing many of his sponsors.

Millions came and went, nobody got Zika, no sporting events were attacked by "roving gun-toting gangs", the Olympic Village sold a record-setting number of condoms which clearly shows the athletes were having a great time as well (lol).

But all of that aside, Sao Paulo doesn't have palm trees. I understand it's an ugly ass city and they wanted to make it a bit more exotic, but why not set it in Rio instead?

Don't Brazilians speak Portuguese though?

Wait there was a fall? I still don't see what's so remarkable about MP3's gunplay, but it's not a bad game.

So same.language but different dialect?

Yeah, they used Portuguese (as in, from Portugal) voice-actors for the parts, I am told. I suspect the whole thing was dubbed in Europe.

I thought this idea of Max being an exile, making it work as a merc in some hellscape country was great, but Brazil isn't really noir, is it? Russia would have been a much better setting, or some Nordic country so they could maybe leverage that Scandi noir aesthetic.

Now, a GTA set in Brazil would be great. That's my jam, right there, City of God style:

Max Payne 1 was super cool at the time. Max Payne 2 was a lot of fun, as well. No idea how well they've aged, though. Didn't play Max Payne 3, because it looked like typical Rockstar game design (albeit, with better mechanics.)

Max's blood
Max's sweat
But most of all...

Max's tears.

First two games are cool I guess but I admire the third one so much more. I remember when it came out, everyone was shitting on it. My friend pulled me up one night like "Ey lad, you gotta play this. It's got that band you like, HEALTH, doing the music." Was like "True, true. I heard it's bad though." At the end of the game I should have been clapping my hands raw. It was truly the best TPS of last gen along with Vanquish. Max is really outdated and outside of his comfort zone, in a foreign land he's out of his depth and out of his league. The people he was paid to protect end up brutalized and in the end he manages to do what he never did in his own life, save a mother and child. It's fucking AMAZING and I didn't even mention how fire the gunplay is.

Shout out to R* man for going in hard on this game and getting HEALTH on board. They deserved to win best game OST of the year for that game easily.

The second entry aged nicely, I think. I replayed it a couple months ago on PC and the only section I didn't really like was the construction site. But it's still fun to mess around with the ragdoll physics and the graphics are sharp.

I...I don't get it. Are you saying they had a bad accent?

Euro Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese have significant tonal differences in their spoken forms, more so than, say, what people call "Standard American English" (is that a thing though?) and the British Received Pronunciation (RP, aka BBC English). Think of all those Brit actors with American accents that come and go (Clive Owen, Gerard Butler, etc) and you'll get an idea of how most MP3 enemies sound to those who understand Brazilian Portuguese.

Standard American English? That's funny. Does Brazil not have 20 different accents? I kinda get it though.

Max Payne 1 was great for its time, except for that damned sequence with the thin red lines making you play platformer. I hated that sequence.

MP2 was great, although I personally think the MP2 Mona looks nothing like the MP1 Mona and that broke the immersion a bit.

MP3 feels so damned different, and I personally didn't like how they brought in a cover system--made it more realistic, sure, but less Max Payne-y. Still a solid game, though.

Max Payne 2 was the first time I felt like a simple narrative and love story carried the game as much as everything else.

I think it got enhanced for the One X... but i doubt it has parity with the pc version at this point so that sucks.

Max Payne 3 sucks. Just like every other rockstar game.... lack of artistic vision, catering to the ghetto thug gamer instead of the cinemaphiles the previous games did.

and of course those games had superior soundtracks too... because you know... the game was made as passion project and not just GtA-fied.

fuck rockstar

It's been 7 years but for me no game has come close to topping MP3's airport shootout. No matter what difficulty you play it on, it's just perfect and everything I wanted from a TPS.

BUT I really hated how some of the cutscenes on replays were unskippable. Also I wish certain parts of the game could have either been chopped or had lesser amount of enemies.

Remedy needs to find backing from a real publisher and not some discount bin company that publishes Nintendo shovelware like 505 games.

Brazil has different accents but it's all within the same structure. People from the north will sound very different from those from the south, but the language sintaxe, structure and words are all still the same, what changes is how they pronounce words.

The European Portuguese is completely different. Has its own worlds, variety in sintaxe, linguistic mannerisms etc... it also sounds completely different.

It's pretty comparable to the English in the US sounding slightly different from state to state but not as different as the British English.

About the game, the depiction of São Paulo threw me off.

I lived there and I really don't like the city, but R* butchered it mixing it with Rio, making it even worse.

This is São Paulo:

Two worlds apart.

Ive been playing Max Payne 3 for 3 years now - always on and off. I honestly cannot find many games that have better writing or voice acting. Also graphically, it holds up extremely well when playing it at 4K.

And best of all : the animation. It's just smooth everywhere. It's crazy to image we had such good tech almost 10 years ago and now most developers's have just scrapped animation (Except RS) or mostly focused on other tech in games. If this tech had stayed or became mainstream - i cant imagine what kinda games we'd have now.

None of the Max Paynes made it to the Xbox One, sadly.

Max Payne 1-2 are some of my all time favorites, and although Max Payne 3 is a very good videogame, it's just not a good Max Payne game. I can't even undestand why would someone take away the franchise's identity so much. Rockstar is among the best in the industry but I agree, have Remedy make a proper sequel... Or reboot.

MP3 was a Rockstar game, not Max Payne. Personally, I hate the Rockstar style and aesthetic, but the shooting was great. It's too bad about the unskippable cutscenes. I heard there's a mod that fixes it, but I haven't had the motivation to replay The adventures of Rockstar Payne in Miami.

My favorite is MP2, like any real Max Payne fan.

I could never get into the Kung Fu mod for MP1. It looks great in highlight videos but the movement feels so sloppy I just always end up quitting and playing MP2 instead.

That's because rockstar games are fucking trash and made for ghetto hoodlums.

Garbage fucking company.

Naughty Dog is worse tho.

then again both developers create games that are overly animated floaty bs with trash shooting and melee combat who's success is due to massive marketing machines and buying review scores.

I get where you're coming from, and 3 certainly does not have the same DNA as the first two. But the mechanics were marvellous and I think ultimately they out-did Remedy in that aspect. I so badly want remade versions of 1 & 2 that feature the physics and systems of 3.

Love all 3 MP games. MP3 is my favourite from a technical standpoint. The combination of the Euphoria physics and sick ass eff gunplay make is beautiful. Just one too many cutscenes for my liking.

Was Brazil better represented as when it hosted the Olympics then?

As a brazillian myself, I think that MP3 created a generic version of Brazil, with multiple traits from lots of regions.

Problem is, the game is set in São Paulo, which is nothing like what was shown in the game. The most faithful representation of the city in MP3 is the Stadium level, a (almost) faithful recreation of Morumbi Stadium.

One of my favorite series. Max Payne 3 was fantastic and I wish it would get remastered or released BC but that dream is dead.

The first game is IMHO the best. Great story and characters. Loved all the mini bosses as well. Grim atmosphere and dark humour. Hopefully it will get a proper remaster in the future.

Rockstar doesn't want to develop max Payne anymore as the profit is afar too low compare to their open world titles, however I wouldn't be surprised to see him being one of the playable characters in some future GTA titles.

It was nearly 20 years ago but to me it feels like yesterday.

Back then I still had no internet connection, so I could only read about upcoming games from the magazines. I remember watching the same magazine with max payne screenshots all over again for months before I have finally played the actal game, that's how much I was impressed with Max Payne 1 graphics (especially Max face looked to me like real). My GF2 MX 32 MB wasnt enough to play Max Payne 1 with 60fps or with maxed out details, however my next PC (AMD Athlon 1.333MHz + GeForce 3 + 256MB system RAM) run this game like a dream, and I also liked xbox version. Very few games since then have impressed me that much like Max Payne 1 and I feel really old when I think about this game 😂.

As far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong with maxpayne 3 infact it's better than 80 percent of games today, in maxpayne all you need to do was shoot anyhow you could with alot of action packed in it, but nowadays you shoot while Ur learning politics!

I thought MP3 was widely regarded as a great game? I certainly enjoyed it.

Mechanistically it's a fun game for the most part, but narratively it's a mess. All the wit of Max is just taken away and you're just some moronic loser putz staggering through San Paolo with absurdly telegraphed plots twists throughout gunning everyone down because it's all your good for and swearing like a vagrant. Great gameplay (and soundtrack), but Noir it ain't.
