The Scribblenauts Official Thread of imagination revelations

Mechanic and Engineer (same model) also pull levers. Very useful, and sometimes it's not even cheat worthy as it allows you to set up some cool interactions. You can wait in front of a gate with a trap while they activate it remotely

Oddly, Nanobots are very good at distracting dangerous fish. They short out as soon as they hit the water, but the fish get so pissed off at them they will attack them over and over. I used it in one level that had pirahna and they completely ignored me.

Another handy one I've found
'machinist' - set him down beside any switch and he'll flip it for you.
I knew that had to be possible, but I was trying a different direction and failing. I went with
scientist, professor, teacher, etc. thinking it was the curiosity of the character that would do it; I never thought to try machinist or engineer.

One of my favorite solutions:

In the level where you have to save a beached whale, I glued a tractor beam to an aircraft carrier and pulled the whale over to the water.

Also some weirdness concerning boats:
In attempting to solve the ninja/pirate boat race mission, I tried out different kinds of boat. For some reason, speedboat was faster than boats that should have been faster or just as fast, like hydroplane or jet boat.

You're an admin on the wiki now good sir.

Oh, thanks. I don't do much with wikis, though, so definitely don't give me admin if you expect me to do stuff. Right now, mostly for my own benefit, I'm compiling a list on my userpage of cool stuff/interactions/whatever that I find. One day, probably a weekend, I plan on making all of my findings Wikipages

I'm avoiding all spoilers so far, so this is just what I've figured out through experimentation. Here are my staple items I'll pull out in a pinch:

wings (attach to self)
pegasus (for self or an NPC)
helicopter
wall (to restrict something's movement)
rope for pulling/dragging things

Got my copy like 2 hours ago but guess what...I introduced it to my sister and she won't give it back. She is just starting 1st grade so she seems to be having a lot of fun typing in the words she know and see them appear and/or interact.

One thing that I think should have been an option was for the letters to be set in alphabetical order since I guess she finds the letters harder to spot when it's set up in QWERTY. This seems to be a great word learning and/or spelling tool for her, even my mom finds it engrossing.

Her bedtime has passed but she is still up playing (yes, she is a little spoiled) so I'll wait till my mom tucks her in, then I can deviously sneak it away.:D

Anybody in GAF an elementary teacher?

I want somebody to pull off the "I put Scribblenauts on an overhead projector for my class" trick and take pics!

Hey, I've been having a blast and avoiding this thread in order to figure stuff out, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get NPCs to follow me or get in my helicopter, etc. Any hints/tips?

So I took this game to work this evening and I think I have convinced a few people to get it.

I was just messing around with it during lunch, and a few guys came over and wanted to know what I was playing. So I told them all about it, and at first they didn't believe me that you could almost spawn anything. So I went back to the main screen and started typing out objects. Basically it went like this: "Here's a car, here's a plane, and here's
Cthulu"
. After the last one, they spent the whole lunch trying to stump the game.

Needless to say, this game rocks.

If you spawned a character you can drag it in the helicopter near the tail side to get them in, but good luck getting them out of that particular vehicle.
As for following NPCs, such characters as a
Mime will follow the first person it sees
, and even something as
wearing a hard hat next to a Worker will follow you
.

Oh ok, then yeah, those are legitimate concerns and people have mentioned them earlier. I guess some people like myself just like it enough to get past those things.

I haven't written a tips article yet (and I'm hardly an expert) but there are some things people have mentioned to make the iffy controls more tolerable. For starters:

1. Always tap where you want Maxwell to go, don't try to drag him or anything. To jump on a ledge, tap above the ledge.
2. Don't try to click on anything right on top of Maxwell, you'll probably get him. Move to one side first.
3. If you're in a vehicle, be careful not to tap the body of the vehicle unless you're ready for Maxwell to drop out.
4. If you're having trouble dragging (especially moving) animals or people, try aiming at their feet or a tiny bit below.
5. If you tap right on something, Maxwell will often run to use it. So either aim carefully and drag, or tap in the case of selectable/targetable items.
6. If Maxwell or other creatures are giving you a lot of trouble by moving around, try using a "wall" or "elevator". A wall will keep him still, and an elevator will keep him locked in one spot until you touch the elevator again.

CAMERA:
If you're examining an area, or watching a fight, hit select or tap the identify icon so the camera will freeze in that area. If you're moving things around in that area, train yourself to either hold that direction control, or occasionally tap one of the directions a tiny bit just to refresh the camera. You only have to do it every few seconds, and it becomes somewhat natural.

I'm not trying to excuse controls, but I think tips like this can make the game less frustrating. :) Hopefully some of them are useful.

Great tips! Thanks to these I haven't had much of a problem with the controls so far.

Hey Jeremiah, is Erica a team member or something? I typed in my name and it brought up Erica...

She's Joe's wife, not sure if you met him at the event.

Yeah, and my GameStop was out. *cries* $45 for a hat somebody else got? Ehhhh no. :P

By the way, has anyone in charge of the wiki contacted the other wiki yet? It seems like if people here are doing articles on words there should be some way to merge so the project stays going longer and has more people. I haven't looked at it myself much, and the flash/javascript ads are very distracting, but I'll try it with javascript/flash off and see how it is.

*edit* Jackson, my two Amazon orders shipped the last couple of days, so I'll have a picture up soon.

No, I already had it preordered and paid off at my gamestop and so when I went in to work I picked it up...

I came to meet you guys, Jeremiah, thats why I was there. I wanted to congratulate you guys in person.

Joe? Who's Joe again?

EDIT: There is no way to switch from QWERTY is there, Jeremiah? I want this to be a learning tool for my sister...If not, she will have to 'learn' it then...

Wow that's awesome you came just to meet us, I'm honored dude!

Joe is the dude behind the scenes that started 5TH Cell with me and a 3rd founder Brett (who was also there.) :)

No QWERTY is it... but qwerty is like the correct way for her to learn a keyboard, so it's good right!? :P

Nice man! Wait.... didn't you bet me 3... hmmmmmmmm? ;)

One tiny note that I'm spoilering because it should probably go in the locked thread.

I looked in the the history of the Wikipedia article for figleaved gourd. This is the page as it was April of last year and this is how it was April of this year. Both contain this passage right at the top:

"English names for the plant include chilacayote, chiverre, fig-leaved gourd, malabar gourd, Malabar squash, pie melon, or shark fin melon. In Spanish it is known as alcayota, cayote, cidra, chilacayote, chiverre, or sambo."

All of these words (except alcayota) bring up are in the dictionary and bring up the same plant. Alcayota isn't in there, but Alacayota is, and it also brings up the same thing. (Yes, I tested them). Note that alacayota gets a "Did you mean..." and the first two results are from the Scribblenauts word list, so it is probably a typo. I think we can say that we have a definite source for how that word got in the game.

On May 1 of this year someone reformatted the list, added a few more English words, and removed the Spanish words. So that's why it doesn't show up in the current Wikipedia.

I just wanted this out there for the record, but I don't want that discussion to destroy this thread.

There is also writing, that way she could practice penmanship.

Man, Edy is a beast.
Even kills Maxwell on the title screen, something that no one else can.
:lol
Is there some kind of joke behind that?

Go back and check your PMs, sir!

4 or more you say? Sure I say. I want pix of those 3 copies. I held up my end of this deal you made.

I held up my end. If you try to change the deal after the fact, I'll summon you ingame, right next to Edy. :lol

a free hat and candy and a pony would be nice too

So, Jackson, what crazy combinations or problem solving have you found most unexpected yet, if you don't mind my asking? Given the game, I'm sure you've already been blown away by your own creation already (which must be an awesome feeling) :D

No problem man, the honor was all mine to meet you guys, wanted to talk to you in person to see how it felt to have completed something so special...

Oh, I was gonna ask where the other cofounder of the company is since I read that you started it with your friend or should I say friends; never knew there was a third person. Did they leave early or something?

Yes, its no big deal though about the QWERTY, she was just fumbling with it when I gave her, like she didnt know the letters but she does. Its great for her as you said since she will be learning the keyboard layout.

I forgot about that option too, thanks. Thats perfect actually...

I contacted them, but the other wiki seems largely abandoned (it was started in June) and I haven't heard anything back yet. I also posted looking for helpers on gamefaqs, and we got a couple contributors from there.

And Technomancer, YES. FOR GREAT JUSTICE.

Jackson, you might like the http://scribble.wikia.com/Scribblenauts page :lol

My short night with Scribblenauts was mostly fruitless, but still rather fun. Things I learned:

1. Dwarf appears the same as miner, and both are presumably useless -- a miner doesn't know how to use a shovel, or at least he doesn't WANT to. Lazy bum, I need people to dig for me, can't get my own hands dirty.

2. "mattock" isn't in the game, which is a little odd (http://cache.lexico.com/dictionary/graphics/ahd4/jpg/A4mattoc.jpg). Is there another term for it I don't know? Pick-axe is somewhat similar but I just wondered. I'm trying to think of creative digging tools since a scoop is also useless.

3. I tried a bunch of different terms looking for someone who was good at defusing explosives. I found "demolitionist" who comes with heavy armor. I figured I'd found the right person for the job!
Turned out he was the uh, opposite person for the job. :lol :lol :lol

Heh, my more creative ideas come by accident.

In Puzzle 1-2, I tried spawning a box to drop over the butterfly. A box appeared, but then I realized it was a crate. I tried cardboard box, but that gave me a crate again. So I took my two crates and repeatedly dropped them onto the butterfly until it was on the ground.
I just put a box beneath the butterfly, jumped on it and then it gave me the option of just grabbing the butterfly.

I think I may have found a glitch (don't know if it's been mentioned yet on the heist level in world 2. Not sure what I did, but it involved using Cupid on the security guard. Inexplicably, sometimes a second security guard comes in from the left (not the policeman upstairs.)

Also, sometimes the mere presence of Cupid turns them friendly, without him shooting any arrows. It was weird.

My DS died :( What horrible timing. At least I can still borrow my sister's DS to play until I get it fixed. And I'll have ODST to distract me next week when my sister inevitably snatches the game and system from me so she can play.

P.S. Before my DS went to the great beyond, I found a seemingly normal word that isn't in the game:
pancakes
. Found that kind of odd.

I played a bit of it.

It actually feels quite limiting for the first part, but I guess it will get better.

Stuff like
give the farmer three farm animals
are quite limiting. I tried wild shit, but it didn't work.

I found out cows kill rabbits though.

Anybody else having a hard time not using the same items over and over again?

I have these crutch items I always use in like action stages. I wish I was more creative, but mister rope, mister wings, and the EBL that I read about in this thread are used a little waaay too much for me.

I turned the upstairs guard friendly without using Cupid. I thought the third security guard was supposed to come in, so you couldn't sit at the beginning forever.

My favorite unusual words so far:
Chain - great for pulling stuff around!
Rope
Pegasus
Lunar Lander
UAV - one of my favorite flying vehicles
Cupid's Bow
Waterskis - don't let you waterski, but they do speed up swimming faster than flippers, I think.

Critters:
Hydra, Scylla, Charybdis, Sphinx, Anubis, Coelecanth...

Does anybody know a good way to use bottled stuff like acid, poison, etc.? Is there any way? Also, is there any way to use pots in actually cooking? The only things I've cooked are meat, pretty much.

My eyes! The
goggles do nothing?

As far as cooking, this is what I have.

Using stove:

Batter > Pancakes
Corn > Popcorn
Dough > Bread
Egg > Omelet
Meat > Steak

I'm still disappointed you can't cook the
hamster in the microwave or any other of the animals I've tried. I can't even toast bread!

...does anyone know how to make a flying (winged) pig? I assume it would be possible since they're in the game's art, but I can't figure out a way to do it.

Make pig, make wings, attach wings to pig.

EDIT: Sure are a few wierd combos that seem to freeze things. Saddle+Sandworm+ It mad the game freeze. Chinese Dragon VS Behemoth too.

Pancakes are in game. Just write Pancake.

"Muse" is a word I'm surprised isn't in the game. I kind of wish more of the greek gods were in the game too. I did find that
Siren
is in the game, though, which is awesome; it kills all the dudes and spares the women. :lol
