The Sega Genesis US Release 20th Anniversary Celebration Thread

Jeeebus 20 years. That's ridiculous.

And I'm sad to say this, but even though I loved my Genesis (especially playing my brother in NHL 93/NHLPA, Mutant League Football, and with him in General Chaos/Toe Jam and Earl), I was always jealous of my friends with Super Nintendo's. In the end it was the best of both worlds though, as I was the only one that had a Genesis. I got to play so many great games because of that.

Thanks for the thread man, now I'm going to have to get my Genesis from whatever box it is sitting in at my parents house halfway across the country. I got this urge to play some Warsong.

Sega-16's interview with Kalinske where he describes convincing Sega of Japan to let him give away the system's biggest smash-hit game for free with system sales is interesting. That interview is here, and it should be required reading! http://www.sega-16.com/feature_page.php?id=214&title=Interview: Tom Kalinske.

That article is spectacular! Thank you for the link.

I still have my CD-X hooked up to the TV right beside me here. I use it regularly.

The games that I always keep on rotation:

Revenge of Shinobi
Shinobi 3
Streets of Rage 2
The Adventures of Batman and Robin
Earthworm Jim
anything 'Sonic'
Gunstar Heroes
Dynamite Headdy
Moonwalker(you heard me!)
Flicky
Contra Hard Corps
Alien Storm
Truxton
Ghouls 'N Ghosts
Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition
Rocket Knight Adventures
Aladdin
Thunder Force 3
MUSHA
Genesis 6-pack(Columns, SOR, etc.)
Phantasy Star 2

And so many more.

Being a Genesis 'collector'(well, I try to only buy games that meet a certain criteria, I don't wish to own EVERY game ever released for it), I've amassed over 200 Genesis titles complete in their box with manual.

There were just so many terrific games released for this baby. It was *the* system for action games. There was just no contest.

I was just playing Lightening Force (TF4), SOR2, and Road Rash recently. It takes only a few seconds to pop in the cart, turn on the Genesis, bounce through the menu and start playing. And the games start off fun and keep it going the entire time. Refreshing.

Blast Processing DUDE! ;)

The Genesis 6-pack was such a bad ass cartridge, I wish there were more of those. 6 games for the price of 1, baby!:D (all of them good, too!)

I noticed a while back that all the cash registers at convenience stores around here have the Sonic "ring" sound whenever they make a sale.

Man so many memeories from the Genesis. I remember getting it and me and my bro just played the living hell out of Golden Axe for like a month straight, so much fun.

I loved the Genesis back in the day. This was the first system that was actually "mine" and not my siblings :).

I had this while my neighbor had the SNES, great combination. Used to love playing games like Streets of Rage 2, the Sonic games, Vectorman, etc.

To celebrate (well not really, I bought it over a week ago but it arrived yesterday) I bought this to store my Mega Drive/Master System collection..

Though it's far more interesting with games in it of course..

The Game Shop I bought it from (over 200 miles away from where I live) said they paid ÂŁ600 for it back when the Mega Drive was the best selling console. I got it for ÂŁ50. Holds 140 games and I have just over 100 so far in it. :D

I love the Mega Drive (not so mad on it's American name, guess because I didn't grow up with it called Genesis): the games are so cheap to collect and I still keep finding games I've never heard of that turn out to be great. My Multi Mega is my most prized system in my gaming collection, add to that a Master Converter and 32X (eventually, I still don't own one because they're quite expensive here) and you have 4 systems in one. :)

Wish the master system version was out over here.

Happy birthday, Sega Genesis. 20 years? Sheesh. The funny thing is, there are a lot of working ones after all this time out there. I don't think I can say the same thing in 20 years from now for any main console sold today(Wii, X-Box360, PS3).

Too right, I've bought quite a few of the things over time and haven't come across a dead one yet. They're pretty darn robust (can't say the same for every Mega CD, though).

Oh, and has anyone here seen this? http://the-nomad-junkyard.blogspot.com/2009/08/attack-of-nomad-clones.html

Even more new Mega Drive clones, this time hand held ones that take the original carts! :D

Genesis was a pretty hugely significant system. It allowed an alternative to Nintendo which got some new developers into console development in a big way, such as EA, and SEGA's different strategy allowed them to grab marketshare from Nintendo and showed that Big N wasn't invincible. Sony would later use the same strategy to take even more marketshare away from Nintendo.

At the time I was an SNES owner, and no kid really had multiple systems, but I played just about every significant release on my best friend's Genesis. Though the Sonic games weren't as good in my opinion as the SNES's Mario games, they were still fun to play and there was tons of other stuff on that system that we had a great time playing, like Earthworm Jim and Vectorman.

I recently got my own Genesis a few years ago and it's sitting at my parents house. I really need to start looking around for some of those exclusive games that my friend never had. Already I have Streets of Rage and Phantasy Star IV. I think I'm going to keep an eye out for the Capcom Disney games that never came to the SNES, Castle of Illusion and Quackshot.

Yeah, that'd be the correct source. =)

I have a soft spot for Sega and the Genesis, and it warms my heart to see all the love in this thread!

The Genesis was the first console I bought with my own money way back in '89. And I LOVED it. Riding high from the NES, I was ready for improved graphics and sound, and the Genesis delivered.

I played the HELL out of Altered Beast since it was the only game I had at first (thank god for pack-ins!). The earliest carts I remember getting were Revenge of Shinobi, Thunderforce II, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and Forgotten Worlds. Of course, such gems (especially for the times) as Strider, Gaiares, Sonic, and Streets of Rage came along soon after.

Turning on Sonic for the first time and hearing SEEEGAAA! was magical. (Getting the Chaos emeralds was nerve-wracking!)

Phantasy Star II was the first RPG I played to completion (thank you, included strategy guide!).

Happily, I was able to acquire a CDX recently for dirt cheap. I've always wanted one, and now it's got a place under the TV. Just played Gauntlet IV a few days ago. =)

Were Castle of Illusion and Quackshot developed by Capcom? I always thought they were developed by Sega internally?

Below are my favorites:
The Sonics
Streets of Rage 1 and 2
Aladdin
Dynamite Heady
Gunstar Heroes
Quackshot
Earthworm Jim 1 and 2
Ghouls and Ghost
Forgotten Worlds

Second-best system of all time... can't believe it's been 20 years already... seems like it was only yesterday I was trying to decide between this and the SNES for Christmas 1991. Well it played home to my favorite game of all time, Phantasy Star 2, and a host of other great games.

Some of my favorites:

Phantasy Star 2
Phantasy Star 4
Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3 + Knuckles
Gunstar Heroes

Yeah, they (along with World of Illusion and the Mega Drive version of Bonkers I believe) were all developed by Sega. Capcom did do one or two Mickey games on the Mega Drive (didn't come out in Europe for some reason, so I've never played them), but as far as Capcom Disney games go they were pretty much only on Nintendo systems. Sega's Disney games were just as good, though.

Oh you're right! Both Castle of Illusion and Quackshot were done by Sega. I assumed they were done by Capcom since Mickey's Magical Quest for the SNES was made around the same time, and was a Capcom game. Well I've heard that both the Genesis Disney games are good anyway so they're worth picking up regardless of who made them.

Ahh the Mega Drive, my first home console! So many memories with the little black wonder, and home to one of my top five games of all time (Sonic Twooooooo). I still play games from it but I've not picked up too many new ones for it in recent years, focusing more on the SNES (which I didn't have in its time [despite wanting it :(]). I picked up Rocket Knight Adventures the other month though, one of the best action games ever made that!

Particular favourites from way back:

Sonics (2>1>& Knuckles>3)
Streets of Rage 1/2
Dynamite Headdy
Revenge of Shinobi (six-pack)
Columns (six pack)
Golden Axe
Micro Machines 1/2
Castle of Illusion
Quackshot
Super Hang-On (mostly for this music track)
Aladdin
The Lion King
Toy Story (this one has become a bit of a guilty pleasure in recent years)
TaleSpin
Lemmings (if not my favourite version)
Toe Jam and Earl

Gems I've come across in more recent years (mostly due to Virtual Console)
Thunder Force IV
Animaniacs
Gunstar Heroes
The Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis
Shining Force
Ecco the Dolphin
Shinobi III
World of Illusion
Earthworm Jim
Rocket Knight Adventures :D

Special Raspberry pick for being so insanely rubbish it hurts
Batman Forever

Think it's off to ebay to pick up a few carts :)

(by the way, have any PAL users modded theirs for 60Hz? I'm considering sending mine into Console Passion to have it undergo such a mod)

The Genesis/Mega Drive was my first console and it still remains one of my favorite systems today. I had a ton of fun during that time. Happy birthday!

Capcom only made one Genesis Disney game, and it was a port of an SNES game -- The Great Circus Mystery, aka Mickey's Magical Quest 2. The rest of the Disney games on the Genesis (and SMS) were done by Sega in the early years, before Virgin got the license later on.

... So, I decided to list all Disney games on the Genesis... no order. If you know the games, you'd know that some of these are quite good, others no good at all...

edit - some corrections from reply.

The Great Circus Mystery (Capcom) (also on SNES)
Fantasia (Sega, developed by Infogrames) (exclusive)
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (Sega) (exclusive, there is also an SMS/GG version but it is different in quite a few ways so it's not just a port)
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck (Sega) (exclusive)
Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse (Sony/Travellers Tales) (also on Sega CD and SNES, the Sega CD is the best version.)
Quackshot starring Donald Duck (Sega)
Goofy's Hysterical History Tour (Imagineering/Absolute Entertainment)
Bonkers (Sega) (Kids Club game)
The Lion King (Virgin) (also on GB, NES, GG, SNES, SMS, PC)
Toy Story (Virgin/Travellers Tales) (also on SNES, GB, PC)
Aladdin (Virgin's team that would later become Shiny)
Mickey's Ultimate Challenge (Hi Tech Expressions) (also on SNES, GB, GG, SMS)
Pocahontas (Disney Interactive) (also on SNES and GB)
Gargoyles (Disney Interactive) (exclusive)
Donald in Maui Mallard (Sega/Eurocom) (Europe only on Genesis) (also (in US too) on SNES, PC, GB, published by a different company on each platform but all developed by Eurocom)
TaleSpin (Sega/Interactive Designs) (also on GG, but not great on either. This is different from the (also poor) NEC TG16 game or the (decent) Capcom NES/GB game.)
The Jungle Book (Virgin, from the to-be-Shiny team) (other versions of the game are on SMS/GG, NES, GB, and SNES, but each is slightly different. though the PC version is likely similar to one or the other major-console one...)
The Little Mermaid (Sega/Blue Sky Software) (there was also a SMS/GG version of this, which is likely somewhat different as those usually were though I haven't played them. These are completely different from Capcom's NES/GB game.)

Castle and World of Illusion are both very good games. The Great Circus Mystery is good too, but the SNES version is probably better. Quackshot is good. Fantasia evidently isn't so good, but I haven't played it. Toy Story and Lion King really are graphics over gameplay... not horrible games, but they're often frustrating games on any platform. The rest... who knows, but given Hi Tech Expressions usually made bad games I wouldn't expect much from that one.

Bolded are the ones everyone who owns a Mega Drive should get. You forgot Aladdin though! Also: Fantastia was developed by Infogrames and was terrible, sadly. Lion King and Toy Story are alright, but yeah I can agree they're crazy hard. I quite like Bonkers as a kid but playing it again recently it was merely ok but nothing special.

They're excellent and simply beautiful to see in motion.

World of Illusion is a great little co-op platformer.

I see that you forgot the Little Mermaid, the Jungle Book, Aladdin, and Tale Spin. Not that I really care.

There are also those two Beauty and the Beast games (from Sunsoft, I think?). Dunno if they're any good, or even worth mentioning.

I've played through Castle of Illusion, spent a tiny bit of time with World of Illusion, and have been eyeing Quackshot at a local shop.

Is Tale Spin good?

I didn't know it was Europe only for Genesis. It's a great game btw. I heard the SNES version is supposed to be better, but the Genesis version is definitely not a bad game.

Pretty sure I remember playing a TaleSpin game for Genesis as well...

Despite being on the Nintendo side of things, I've always had a deep respect for Genesis. Hell I probably would've owned one myself if my brother hadn't already chosen his side back in the Master System days.

Fond memories include:

- Being blown away by the Revenge of Shinobi intro
- Seeing Golden Axe for the first time
- Watching my bro play through Phantasy Star 2 and loving that ending
- Watching my bro beat Thunderforce 2 on Hard without losing a life
- Buying my bro Streets of Rage 2 on Christmas eve...it was a christmas miracle!
- The lightning storm level in Musha
- Finishing Shining Force (probably the first Genesis game I finished on my own)
- Virtua Racing, Lightning Force, Sonic 2, Ranger X, Fatal Rewind, NHL 95, etc

The list goes on. There were way more memories with that system than any other system we've owned. It wasn't the power that backed that machine, it was the unbelievable library it had.

I really hope Disney somehow allows their licensed games to make it to the VC. I only played Quackshot of the all the Sega Disney games, but I remember it being fantastic.

I missed the Mickey games entirely, but the Game Gear World of Illusion was fantastic, and I'm guessing the Genesis/MegaDrive games were just a good or better.

Genesis still has to be the best system I ever owned - I was a broken Sega fanboy from the Master System days - NOT a good team to be on back then... but the Genny changed all of that. :)

I remember getting mine before a Sega rep (1-800-USA-SEGA :) even knew they were out yet - I think I called to ask what games were coming out or something and the guy was baffled and thought I was playing a prank on him. I actually put the phone to the TV so he could hear "Rise from your grave".

Anyway - I played Thunderforce 2, 3, Lighting Force, MUSHA, Gunstar Heroes, Ranger X, Revenge of Shinobi and countless others till I could beat them with my eyes closed - there was just something about those games that made me play over and over.

Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force, Beyond Oasis, Phantasy Star 2,3,4, Landstalker - so many good RPGs!!!

I of course bought the Sega CD and 32X - and while many will snub their nose at those attachments, I had good times with Sonic CD, Silpheed, Road Avenger, Time Gal, Valis, Knuckles Chaotix, Tempo, and more. I remember playing some platformer game starring a dog - it was awful - but the fact that it was pumping CD quality music thru my stereo more then made up for it :)

While most of you might think I'm mentally retarded for saying this, I still say gaming as a whole was better in the 16bit era than any other - past and present. It's not nostalgia saying that - the graphics left more to the imagination, the challenge was much harder, and you weren't bombarded with so many games like you are today.

I think it's the volume of games today that dilutes the experience for me - between retail games and all the DLC, I just don't cherish a game like I used to. Or maybe it's the gray hair growing around my nipples. Who knows.

Long live Genny! Viva la Sega!

Gunstar - the game you're talking about must be WonderDog, I never played it myself but it looked pretty derivative/uninspired at the time (Still, my interest is piqued, maybe it it worth giving it a shot!)

It's hard to say "gaming then was better than gaming now" - personally I would agree, for my tastes, but blanket statements like that are hard to qualify as so much has changed in so short a time. We have so many more games instantly and easily accessible at the drop of a hat, games on the whole are much larger-budgeted affairs, year on year we see more blockbuster-level titles pumped out by the big houses with years of development time put into each product. Also we are bombarded by media coverage of all of this with the internet forums and dedicated websites and youtube vids and so on and so forth. 20 years ago (ulp) we just had a couple of scrappy magazines to get us through the downtime and that was it, really - games were just considered little more than "a kid's toy" at the time.

If you're in the market demographic these days you're well-catered to and genuinely have lots of choice and insane options to game however you like (a crazy home theater setup, perhaps on the go with a PSP or DS or iPhone or whatever, or just through your souped-up PC if that's your thing) - each with an avalanche of what is generally accepted as quality software between all of 'em.

But I am with you - personally I am happy plugging in my NES or Genesis or whatever and getting a charge out of the intricately and lovingly-crafted games of yesteryear, I guess we are fortunate that it's kinda trendy to be into those games once again (such that there's a fairly good amount of support for the older games, lately)

Almost brings tears to my eyes. I remember being a little kid first getting Altered Beast, and thinking, "I have reached the next level in gaming." Beat in in an hour, but it was way beyond anything I had played at home graphically.

alteredbeast.jpg

Then came Ghouls and Ghosts, Revenge Of Shinobi, and Phantasy Star II. Those were days I will always cherish! :D
