The Sega master system appreciation thread of SegaScope 3D!

damn peagles...what have you cleaned it with so far?

Used an eraser, and when that didn't work, isopropyl. The pins don't look too dirty, but they are kinda dull compared to my other MS games which are shiny and new. Might give it another go over soon and try again.

On closer inspection, I might be SOL...

damn Peagles...only other trick i have is Brasso. id say be careful but you might not have much to lose, give it a go!

That's the one. I found out there is a level select code (this would be a microtransaction today), so I can at least start there now. I must have played that level for two hours strait, but I cannot clear it yet.

god, never knew about that code (heh), ive never seen past that level.

Yeah I'd say hit it with Brasso. That might do it. I'd say you'd have nothing to lose unless you got it through eBay and needed to file a claim.

Dad picked it up for me for $2 so no huge loss if it doesn't go. I guess I could try soldering the chip onto a similar board if brasso doesn't work.

I have a master system I got about 7 years ago and just recently got a video cable for it. The only game I have is R-Type and when I try to turn it on I just get a flashing light. Is the system dead, game dead, or is it something like the NES?

The Master System has a BIOS, which means you can turn it on without a cartridge and have something displayed on your screen. That something being the SEGA logo usually followed by a built-in game. You should at least see the SEGA logo, your game is not part of the problem
yet
.

What screen are you using? I heard modern flat screens may sometimes not display signals when they're too low-res. I don't know much more about that though, sorry.

What cable are you using? you can try fiddling with both ends of the cable while switched on to see if it's a problem with the connexions. Are you sure of your cable? Can you hear sound going through? R-Type is silent until you press a button to start a game. You may have to wait a few seconds before mashing buttons.

I've been advised to always use denatured alcohol for cleaning cartridge contacts.

But I guess with the other things you tried, you should've had some result if the cart was still ok.

It really shows how Sega had no third party for the Master System. Parker Brothers has three games relegated in a corner, everything else is created or remade by Sega.
Yeah, kind of sad. I remember envying a lot of the neighbour kids NES titles. I did get to play some rare and fairly good games though. It was further between the gems on the MS, but sometimes there were some really fun games!

Alright, so my Master System is finished up as far as I'm concerned. It has the bios replaced with the SMS Bootloader and Tim Worthington's FM Sound Board mod installed. The board just arrived today, and so far I think it's very cool. I've just been messing with different games checking out the difference in soundtracks.

Console could be in slightly better condition, but it was given to me free so it will have to do until I come across a better looking one.

Here's a capture of Double Dragon with the FM Board installed. I'm pretty happy with it.

That sounds really good! I'd love to see videos for other games (Rastan, R-Type, etc.).

I'd forgotten how much sprite flicker is in Double Dragon. lol

So it's been one year since I made this thread. I've been buying up a LOT of video games within the past year or so. The scope of this has been bigger than I originally intended it to, but I think I'm at least 90%-95% of where I want to be with my retro video game collection.

I think I'm basically complete with my Master System collection. There are a few games that I would like but that I'm not sure if I'm willing to pay for, like NInja Gaiden and Golden Axe Warrior.

Sonic 1 is the PAL version, so don't get too excited.

It's literally the same in every way except a UPC sticker. Anyone that gets excited over that has problems.

You should check out Kenseiden and Golvellius. I still haven't tried out Montezuma's Revenge, so that might be cool, too =X

Yeah I refuse to pay for a sticker, lol. Seems like it would be super easy to counterfeit.

How is Global Defense? I was under the impression it wasn't a very well loved game.

I can't help but notice most of your games are pre-1990, save for the Sonics. Any reason for that?

Eh I got it in a lot. I didn't play it for very long, but I didn't think it was that bad. Not bad enough to sell immediately, anyway.

You mean aside from the fact that anything after 1989 would have come out when the Genesis was already out in America?

I didn't deliberately choose to leave anything out based on release date. I just bought games that seemed interesting or notable and I thought I might enjoy.

Hmm okay, I never considered using meths. I just assumed it'd be way too strong for use on cartridge contacts. I guess I could give it a try though when I'm back home.

It actually looks like there's dots of rust underneath the surface metal on the pins though, so I don't think I'm gonna get it working unless I transplant the chip to a similar board.

Global Defense had some great graphics for the time and I enjoyed it. But I think it was one of those games that I enjoyed because I forced myself into it... having nothing else to play until my birthday a long time later.

It was repetitive, difficult and not all that much fun.

I meant Master System development was still quite active well after the Megadrive was out, plenty of notable games came out between 1990 to 1994. Stuff like the games based on Asterix, Donald, Mickey (two of each) are all fairly good platformers, Ninja Gaiden and Golden Axe Warrior as you said, Master of Darkness, Bubble Bobble, Alex kidd in Shinobi World... All of these are on my have/want lists. But I'm biased toward platformers, maybe that's just not your thing.

You should definitely go for Ninja Gaiden and Golden Axe Warrior, they're just awesome. I received my copy of Golden Axe Warrior last week and have been trying to complete it since then. I'm enjoying most everything from it, it's like Zelda, but better.

I'm definitely interested but they are pretty pricey.

Just won a complete mint copy of Back to the Future II on eBay for cheap. =') Probably because whoever listed it just had it as 'sega games'. It's a pretty bad game, but one that usually goes for more money than I'd ever be willing to spend on it.

Aaaaaahhhh, this is so cool!

So SEGA/Tonka was planning on rebranding 'Golfamania' as 'Super Golf' in America? Doesn't look like they even bothered releasing it in the end.

It's really weird that once the US side of things had died is when it actually took off in Europe, with publishers like Domark (Desert Strike), US Gold (Road Rash, Gauntlet) and Virgin Interactive (Jungle Book, Cool Spot) doing porting jobs and keeping the thing alive.

The EU market was computer dominated, so it was much harder for the big N to get a foothold (plus their pricing at the time was absolutely bonkers.) It was much easier for Sega to get a foothold without the presence of an ( illegal) monopoly.

I have no idea how Sega persuaded is to move from C64/Spectrum to Master Statem though. 3x the cost for basically the same game? Odd.

I'm guessing this was released at a later date or something?

I like the SMS controller in the box; it has what I needed back in my MSII days: A damn start/pause button ON the actual controller!

So 1st of all, that Sega Game Gear Master System is kinda screwing with my mind. Making it difficult to think straight.

Going forward - I am a Sega Guy. I had a Genesis from 1989 and cherished it. But I was NES before that. At the time, I looked at SMS and I knew it wasn't my thing. It looked awesome in the magazine... Empire City, Rampage, Rambo, Double Dragon.. even Zillion. But there was never anything that looked like it remotely approached Contra, Blaster Master, Metroid, all the Capcom games like Bionic Commando and holy high hell Mega Man 2.

SMS Had Phantasy Star, Miracle Warriors, R-Type, Rastan. Golvellius. Wonder Boy. All of those had their points (esp. Phantasy Star) and of course the AM2 ports but I mean.. you could not even fire your Afterburners in goddamn Afterburner.

Now I know better than to come into a gaf thread, especially a retro thread (which are near and dear to my heart) than to try and start trouble, and that's the point, I am not trying to start trouble. I love the SegaScope-3D games on SMS. I love the chiptune soundtracks of every game I have ever heard in SMS Z80 style (Action Fighter, Quartet, Alex Kidd, Shinobi, Choplifter). Phantasy Star will always be a "game out of a time machine" which stood taller than anything we'd ever seen on NES. I know the scene in 1980s (NES wouldn't allow licensees to create games on competing hardware). I guess I am trying to dig for the games which got less recognition back in those days, in hopes of bringing them to light now.

I think you'll find some good hidden gems throughout this thread. Nice reading!

And assuming you're american due to the Genesis reference, there are also some very good games in the 90s that were released on PAL and south american territories that are well worth looking into. Asterix and Micromachines immeadiatly come to mind.
