"When we developed the character of Jon Kavanaugh last year to go up against Vic, we really thought we were creating someone who would tear the audience's allegiance in half," Ryan says. "Half of the audience would sort of root for Vic, and half would root for Kavanaugh to take down this dirty cop.
"What we found was that almost 100 percent of the audience was rooting for Vic and fervently rooting against Kavanaugh. That surprised me."
At this point, Ryan adds, he believes that no matter how corrupt, how vicious and how amoral Mackey becomes, there's nothing "Vic could do that would turn off the vast majority of the audience."
