Nooooooooo! I used to watch this and Christmas Eve on Sesame Street each year with my family on Christmas Eve. Usually I'm not upset by dumb remakes, but this one's seriously fucked up.

edit: oh it's a sequel. wellll, I'm not as annoyed now.

For some reason I was thinking of this movie.

I thought the same thing except this one:

It's bit of British institution. It's aired every year on the same channel since its release without fail. How is it perceived in the US if you don't mind me asking? Is it shown every year?

Y'know, I'm not sure. Me, my little brother and the group of my friends from childhood all know it, and I still watch it at Christmastime on VHS, but I'm not sure if it's actually ever aired on TV. Possibly on OPB or PBS stations, but other than that, I don't think so.

The traditions here are those awful stop-motion movies and the slightly less awful A Christmas Story. Everything aired here is required to have a moral or something, I dunno :|

I also don't see this as being a remake, which is why I'm not all freaked out about this news. And the people working on it obviously know what a huge deal it is and how precious it is to everyone, so I'm not worried about the quality or execution :) Exciting! I really want to see it; those promo illustrations look amazing /doe eyes

To melt and bring tears to the eyes of a new generation of British children.

I wonder if the snowman will go down in flames, with explosions and shit this time. It'd put a new spin on the movie to keep it hip and edgy.

...im not going to trip...i loved this as a kid..hell all kids i show this to love this..im so happy he gets to see the snowman again!

Screw the cynicism, I am well and truly looking forward to this.

It's not replacing anything; I'll still have the original to watch. It's being done by much of the same team, and it's not a remake.
The new film, The Snowman and the Snowdog, is set 30 years on from the original. It opens with a boy mourning the death of his dog while snow falls outside. He lifts up a floorboard and finds an old scarf with snowmen printed on it, a memento stowed away long ago by another child. Inspired, he goes outside and builds a snowman and snow dog, with a satsuma for a nose and mismatched socks for ears.
Jesus, they could destroy childhoods depending how far they go with that.

From the trailer it looks good actually. The original is a true childhood treasure, I still make a point of watching it every year, and it has to be one afternoon where you start watching when it's light and by the end it's dark and you didn't notice *wipes away a tear* ;_;

I'm quite looking forward to it. Even now the ending of the original affects me. If they can maintain the quality and tone it'll be a winner.

Ahh! It looks amazing! By amazing, I mean perfect: it looks like the original, but definitely not a remake. And it looks like it'll still be dealing with the same kind of theme as the first one... which I personally really, really love. There's an epic amount of emotion in The Snowman, and I'm eager to see if they can match it with this one (or even come close).

I didn't catch that Benedict Cumberbatch did some voiceover work for it, either! So awesome! He has an amazing voice <3 I hope they don't overdo it on that aspect; a big part of the original was how big of a "character" they made silence.

Not to be confused with the 2012 Doctor Who Christmas special "The Snowmen".

Ian McKellen is lending his voice to this one. I guess Moffat traded Cumberbatch for McKellen.

"An adaptation of the film for audio and e-readers will be voiced by Cumberbatch and will be available to download for Kindle, Nook and Apple devices on 29 December 2012."

oooh that trailer looks really sweet, looking forward to this now. hope they make me look like a tit for my early dismissive comment.

I hadn't seen they were doing this. I suppose I will reserve judgment until its released but I don't understand why this had to be remade. Does the original not hold up with kids today? I thought it was pure magic as a young kid, and still do.

I'm walking on the aaaaaaaaaaair...

Briggs is a master. His books Fungus The Bogeyman and The Tin Pot General...blew my mind as a young fellow, as I do believe that was my first understanding of social commentary through the lens of kid's literature.

Fungus is excellent.

The Snowman is fantastic, too.

Stupid that they decided to put this on at 8

I would have liked to watch it with my boy but that's too late for him really
What's worse is that The Snowman has been moved back a day. The first time since its premiere that The Snowman isn't being shown on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

Ideally, they'd schedule them back-to-back in a one hour slot on Christmas Eve.

Is there something else they're showing thats "more important"? Why would they do this, especially to a classic :(

There were. It always gets me (during walking in the air and at the ending), my teaching assistant had never seen it before and cried and a few of the kids (who grasped it) were weeping.

Great film.

Yup. I had the VHS when I was younger, it's definitely something I want my kids (if i have them) to see.
