The Spoony Experiment

Yeah besides the grating, whiny manchildish tone, the stomping tantrum, and assuming that he spent a decent amount of time with a playable demo of the game, I don't really see what the big deal is. In fact I give him respect for having the balls to not be just another "Wow so glad to be at E3 guys! All your games look great!" pandering sycophant like most everybody else.

But the infantile manner he chose to communicate that sentiment negates all of said respect.

I found it entertaining, but probably because I thought it was an act of self-deprecation. Truth in exaggeration. He was very Yahtzee-esque to me. Yeah, he's exaggerating and being sarcastically silly, but at the same time, saying things that needed to be said because everyone else was busy drinking the koolaid. The manchild that countered the other manchildren. Now, I dunno.

I wonder what will happen with the 4th Year Anniversary for TGWTG, no doubt he has a large role in it, but it will be fairly awkward to watch now.

The Cinema Snob movie is a different matter, that's not prominent on the site.

Holy smokes. He's (was?) meant to appear at an Irish convention in my University in like two weeks.

His flight has been paid for for months now. Very unfortunate turn of events. I really don't feel too good about his new 'lack of behavioural restraint' :/ I feel sorry for the organisers but hopefully, hopefully, the panel will be nice and behaved.

My fear is if he starts treating people irl the way he's been treating them on Twitter :/ Really sucky situation.

Yeah I know it was more intended to be in the realm of physical comedy than a legitimate tantrum, but it just rubs me the wrong way I guess. I think Yahtzee would be a little more professional and articulate in telling a group of devs exactly why their demo sucks, and man I'd love to see that.

But yeah, I like that he thinks for himself and doesn't care about trying to suck up to people in the industry for the sake of his own career. Still, I think he had many better options of going about this. I would've liked to have seen him get an interview and press them respectfully about the flaws he saw in the game, maybe with some minor snark depending on their reaction. Would've been much, much more effective

While he made insensitive comments to several co-workers, Spoony was becoming a liability on the website. He was let go because the strength of his following didn't overcome his various problems.

Here are the main points:
- He was belligerent on Twitter for a long time and attracting bad press.
- At E3 2011, he made a huge scene over the X-COM FPS. This resulted in the website and any associated members being blacklisted from several companies during gaming events, such as GDC and various gaming expos.
- His productivity was way down. He refused help from his friends/co-workers in getting better and back to work.

Essentially, he was costing the business money and not bringing enough in. I think his recent comments accelerated the inevitable if anything.

Woah! Did they seriously get blacklisted? When was this mentioned? O_O

So yeah, many of his fans are attacking and harassing Lupa(Allison) now, and he didn't try to stop them.

It's really his fault,he should just stopped tweeting shit about everyone, apologize to JO and Lupa, turn off his internet for few days.

I just feel sorry for his brother, this breakdown is the worst so far for Spoony since his ex friend left him.

Jesus Christ, I can barely believe all the shit that happened regarding that guy these past few days. I used to enjoy the spoony experiment. Now I'm not too sure how I could enjoy his stuff knowing he's such a fucking dick. We all get through shit during our life. It's no reason to act like the bottom of the barrel like he does.

The shittiest view when dealing with a depressive, bar none. Well next to "they should just get over it."

Absolutely ridiculous that you are saying this. One of my good friend tried to kill himself around 10 years ago. These words came out of his mouth during his welcome back party a month after the incident.

Is he on any treatments?

This behaver seems like someone who has stopped a coarse recently.

yeah it's well known,he already have a heart condition and get pills for that, and last year doctors give him depression medications (because of the Scarlett thingy) but not sure if he still taking them.

Yeah, but what does it say about the convention to still have him be a guest?
PR rules kind of state they either have to support or go against him.

Damnit Spoony :(. He had some very good reviews, but he was a bit too negative overall for my tastes. I just lost any respect I had for the guy, what a dick, depression or not.

Do you have any sources for that second bit? Not that I doubt you I just want to see the full thing explained with this.

This might open a completely new can of worms, but LordKat, a former TGWTG member actually elaborated on that in a podcast yesterday. It should still be on his website somewhere. (It is on Part 2 around 17 minutes in)

HHHHHGGGGGGNNNNN!!!

That song is stuck in my head once more....D:

On a more serious note, I feel bad for the man. Hope he'll get better, at this point I guess nothing can help him except himself.

I think leaving him alone is bad idea imo and he'll destroy himself more,he already cut the only source of money he get each month because of that and right now he is just keep insulting and trashing everyone (his friends including) on twitter,I think Miles(his brother) should interfere.

Yeah.

To leave him to himself is kinda dangerous. I mean, even after the diagnosis of his heart-condition, he still eats fatty, drinks lots of soda during some videos and things like that.

look like he just(finally) noticed that he is losing his friends this way.
No more Pathfinder for a long while, guys. If ever. Most of the players no longer want to associate with me.

anyway Lupa said this

Blaming Scarlett for Spoony’s problems is the most bullshit thing I’ve ever heard, and you should be ashamed for using that excuse. He’s been harassing her, her friends, anyone associated with her, for existing, for the crime of breaking up with him, and you have the fucking nerve to call her promiscuous? Because damn it, she’s done absolutely nothing like that, and someone has the right to exist in this world. It doesn’t matter if she twitter flirts, she has the right to fucking exist, and no one, NO ONE should hold anyone ransom for their own happiness. People have shit on her because of HIS attacks, and this shit needs to stop now. You said she did something wrong for breaking up with him when he’s depressed? Fuck you.

And Scarlett ( his ex girlfriend) replayed
Reading her words today, it really touched me that she said something in my defense, as I’ve often felt like Public Enemy #1 for nearly 1-1/2 years now.
This last 16 months has been really difficult, for both of us. I’m mindful enough to take responsibility for being the catalyst; the cause for the effect. But if a levee breaks, it shouldn’t continue to be blamed for the flood.

Also I think she want him to move on already
Sometimes, relationships just run their course. Friendships, business partnerships, romantic involvements - they’re all subject to the natural ebb and flow of emotions, time, circumstance, etc. That doesn’t mean that love is lost; on the contrary, sometimes the most loving thing you can do for someone is to let them go, if the path you’ve both been walking is feeling increasingly divergent. People grow apart, goals and desires change, and (much to the frustration of many), there’s nothing at all intriguing or scandalous about it. So imaginations are ignited, speculations are made, rumors are formed. And why not? Fantasy can be a helluva lot more interesting than reality. But gossip is like an epic AoE spell that you’re unwittingly stuck in the middle of. Even months - years - after it’s cast, you’re still feeling the aftershocks.

He wasn't on top of his game during his FF8 reviews either. He stopped for like 2 years because his fans just kept saying "finish the ff8 review" when he was bored with it and wanted to move on, so he said fuck his fans and just didn't do it anymore. He went through a whole meltdown over this too where he told his fans to fuck off. Then after his Phantasmagoria Let's Play, he put in the clip at the end of the video where he teases that he's going to be finishing the FF8 review. Something isn't mentally straight with him, but he is very funny, has a substantial knowlegde of pop culture, and is a good writer and makes very good videos. I guess all good artists are crazy though.

Yeah, I agree, I think I meant more of half or whatever of the review; the parts where he did it because he wanted to.

....
There is no words

He made another rape joke, now a rape victim (I think one of his fans too) tells him it's not cool,he don't care and made another rape joke..

sad career suicide

Someone (either Miles or his parents) needs to completely disconnect him. Unplug his computer, take away his phone, bar him from touching anything with Twitter. I can't even describe how I feel about this, it's just so numbing...

The response was from a contributor on The Agony Booth. A former text recap site that's changed gears to a TGWTG-lite. http://www.agonybooth.com/
I know he's done a video with The Cinema Snob.

Spoony's always acted like an extremely petulant child. I'm surprised it took this long for everything to come out and for him to completely self-destruct like this.

You know who else I feel bad for in this situation? Doug (Nostalgia Critic). Dude gets married and goes off on his honeymoon, and immediately all this shit happens while he's gone. Really has to be ruining what should be a happy time for him.

In hindsight, we should have seen this coming. Lots of signs...

This year was really bad for him. Especially the angry arguments about Mass Effect 3 and Cabin in the Woods.

Yeah that really sucks. I'm sure Doug's got this hanging over him.

Not to shit on this discussion, but does anyone else feel weird talking about all this? I feel like the guy is a step away from being a regular dude, and that's not a shot, that's just the way it is; and to be talking about his problems this in depth and dissecting this stuff...especially when there are likely so many things we don't know...I don't know, it's just weird to me. Like I said though, that's just me.

It's definitely weirder because it's closer to home than celebrity gossip.

It's his fault for not keeping his real life away from his online persona. You share stuff with the fans and it cuts both ways.

*shrug* They're internet celebrities. They put their lives out there by choice, so I don't really see the harm in discussing them.

Then again, that guy comes off as a whiny asshole, too - did he do any cool stuff? Never heard of him, but I've not been into TGWTG stuff besides a handfull of guys on there. Still listening though, just got through the first caller.

Yeah, that's fair I guess. I don't know I still feel weird about it. I always felt weird when people talk about the dudes at Giant Bomb too, especially with how "attached" some of their fans are. They just seem like dues to me that just do this shit for a job that they like, but it gets to a weird level with some people. Not saying people in this thread are doing that at all, but I'm just saying it does happen.

I'd say that's easily explained. Internet "celebrities" are waaay easier to reach. You add them on Twitter or Skype, chat with them occasionally, send mails, get mails back, they mostly just behave like regular people. Same with other people in the gaming industry, most of them are nice and easy to reach for chatting and stuff.

Soo, because those guys are basically on the same level as you are instead of some unreachable movie star or supermodel or whatevs, you tend to connect to them much, much easier. They're around the same age than their fans, they have the same hobbies, they talk about the same stuff, so the fans get easily attached and the whole community thing helps a lot, too.

Scarlett and Lupa sound very mature about all this. I did like the "gossip is like an epic AoE spell that you're unwillingly stuck in the middle of" line.

Holy cow.

I'm listening to LordKat's podcast. That guy DESPISE Spoony, and I'm guessing he's not the only one.

LordKat got refused an interview with Notch at GDC because of the Spoony "Betrayal" rage at E3 2010.

personally, i think LordKat is a bit of a user. he was really cool with Spoony before E3 and name dropped Spoony quite a bit when i listened to some of his live streams in the past. he lost a few interviews at E3 and completely burned bridges with Spoony.

How the hell does someone get from "guy he knows gets mad at game that looked like shit and shat on his pleasant memories of the franchise" to "not allowed to interview an indie developer who has nothing to do with that game or publisher"?

Seems like blaming it on him is more convenient than anything.

Yeah, I'm a semi-fan of his stuff. He seems like a real...I don't know, he's not really a "nice" guy to a lot of the people he seems to talk about. I don't know, because at other times he seems like a super-nice dude, it just seems to depend on who he's talking to. I remember him talking about him being pissed at Spoony though because of the "Betrayal" thing, which is understandable, but I wouldn't hold a grudge. I also remember a stream with Spoony saying that he understood why LK was mad, and he was fine with it, which seemed sensible.

Thank you.

LordKat said that when Spoony did his Betrayal rage, the industry took notice of it.
When LordKat got at GDC and was about to do his interview with Notch, a representative of Notch's company recognized LordKat and stepped in. "Hey, you're that guy from that site with the guy that raged at E3 about X-Com." (Paraphrased here.) And he got refused the interview.

From what I'm getting, Spoony destroyed TGWTG/Channel Awesome's reputation with that one thing.

He explains it better on the podcast.

yea, LK is nice to his fans and all but burning bridges with someone you were "friends" with for being a jackass for a day kinda shows he didn't really care about being friends with Spoony. personally, i think LK was using Spoony's fame to get himself more cred.

i mentioned the Spoony stream too where he he mentioned why LK is mad at him. i didn't actually know why but Spoony said LK called him a "monkey" or something. that's not cool even if he was mad at him.

i wouldn't say Spoony really caused any damage. Angry Joe still gets a lot of opportunities and he stood right next to Spoony during that rage. i think it's that one rep who didn't like it.
