The Spoony Experiment

I tell ya... The stuff about Spoony is saddening... But I thank this thread for exposing me to Angry Joe and Clan of The Grey Wolf. Excellent stuff.

Check out Lupa, Linkara, Cinema Snob and Film Brain, too :)
Depending on with which video you start they may come off kinda lame at first, but they will really grow on you, I promise.

Bennet the Sage's Anime Abandon show is awseome too

His Akira review was fucking embarrassing, anything above laughing at dick demons and the guy is out of his depth.

I haven't followed any of this, but the stuff i saw on TGWTG was pretty awful, though i've only seen a bunch of videos (mainly from the Nostalgia Critic).

The only one i've liked so far were actually from Spoony, like the FF8 and FFX reviews or the Highlander endgame review etc.
Anyhow, listening to a bit of that podcast linked in the last page, it sounds like they're a pretty big deal, personally i can't understand why.
And that guy sounds like he has somne issues himself.

Also, what's this "betrayal" thing?

He likes X-COM, and did not like the X-COM game shown at E3 (09?) and did a bit about it where he shouted betrayal a lot.

I dont know what to say to that.
Wasnt my experience at all.

Not understanding why the children tried to scare the guy with a monster made of toys and milk.

Not understanding the line ''We are to him, what an ameba is to us '', he though it meant the powers in the film came from amebas, the guy is a moron.

I am absolutely shocked that a number of people from a site where you're discouraged from saying anything other than how they're spectacular individuals and rating them lower than a 4 out of 5 for awkwardly pretending to get angry at old videogames and cartoons wound up being mentally unstable and downright terrible human beings

I used to like Spoony before he got that stupid fucking INTERNET COMEDIAN OF THE YEAR ALL YEARS AWARD but what with him antagonizing other video creators (that rape 'joke' is the tip of a huge iceberg) and viewers alike for years now this meltdown been a long time coming. He deserves every single piece of hate going his way and while every other internet reviewer (why is this a thing) who took this opportunity to take potshots at him is also a bullying shit, I'm baffled by how many people are either trying to give him a pass due to his depression or even congratulate Spoony.

Only solace I can take is none of these people mattered outside of the internet in the first place.

That seems a little harsh, but okay.
I've always found his stuff really funny

He's fine when dealing with a fun goofy subject, but he has obvious limits.

The guy's ego is far too inflated but this whole joke this is not even a 'tip of the ice berg', as someone who ignores his Vlogs, Blogs and Twitter feed I can easy enjoy his film and game reviews and still will even after this.
It's not like he assaulted someone, he made one joke who someone else entirely pretended to have a problem with then Spoony lashed out too much at comments about him.

You are aware the internet is an actual thing in the actual world, right? I see where you're going, and you're not really wrong, but I never understood these sentences, it's like saying "Superman doesn't matter, outside of comics", or "Bruce Willis doesn't matter outside of movies", or "Deadmau5 doesn't matter outside of this club".
Even internet reviewers form opinions, create memes, habits, love, hate or expressions outside of this strange, far away internet world.

What I do say though is that a lot of people who think they're somehow involved enough in this to rant, report or blabber on about their feelings about teh incident don't even matter inside the internet (which is basically what I guess you meant to say), and that's a good thing, I guess.

edit: Carfo: I don't think it was THAT bad either, but I'm sure you witnessed all the internet hubbub about that particular word "rape" and how it's used nowadays. It was the wrong joke in the wrong time, and also a prime example of what I've just said - the internet isn't a place to itself, it's just another medium of the so-called "real world".
Honestly, if Spoony made that joke a year ago, I don't think a lot of people would have cared about it.
(Disclaimer: I'm not saying it wasn't stupid to say at all, it really was. But people say stupid things all the time.)

I still don't think his original tweet was even that bad. It's the internet. Much worse things have been said, and he wasn't even serious.

I agree with him on Grave of the Fireflies on being manipulative though, and that's probably the most controversial review he's done.

That Lordkat podcast, HOLY SHIT.

That bizarre twitter account he made for his dog alone has several bizarre tweets directed at female members of the site wanting them to be his new 'mommeh' and there's already this gem of a video showing him randomly strolling into someone else's livestream and proceeding to shit talk everybody trying to put on a show in there. It's pretty obvious this has been something which has been happening for awhile now and the only thing that stopped Spoony getting his ass handed to him for being a creeper was his one justified popularity. I wish people would stop focusing on OH THIS HAPPENED A MONTH AGO or THE GIRL HE JOKED ABOUT DIDN'T EVEN COMPLAIN. The former doesn't change what he did and I would say the latter indicates more she didn't want to get her name dragged through the mud for filing a complaint about the all-mighty Spoony, unlike both his ex-girlfriend everybody keeps blaming for him descending into madness and that Lupa chick... Who I'll admit immediately afterwards milked the drama for all it was worth; as I said I think a lot of the TGWTG folks come out of this looking like assholes.

Well yeah, obviously there's real-world consequences (Spoony's family and friends, convention goers who wanted to meet him before this, etc.) and he and every other 'angry internet reviewer' has their own life outside the internet, but since you seemed to got what i mean I'll just add that I just wanted to vent about it a bit on GAF since people seemd to be siding more with Spoony when... Well, fuck Spoony. This kind of attitude isn't new from him, he had it before he started talking about depression and while I would've preferred it happening in a way which was less self-destructive (since I want the old Spoony back, yadda yadda yadda) I'm glad for once his recent assholish-ness was made public.

I don't think it's the most awful thing that's ever been said either, but since that JesusOtaku (I honestly didn't know this person existed before this whole drama) had apparently just been dumped by her boyfriend it's pretty indicative of how little social tact Spoony has. As I said above it wouldn't surprise me if it got to her far more than what she said publicly and this other person who brought it up a month later was tired of Spoony's internet fandom forcing the site to sweep it under the rug and this girl to keep quiet about it.

Or she didn't care.

Man this thread exploded overnight, I want to listen to the LK video but at the same time I've always thought he was a buffoon, he even yelled at me back on the spoony one forums when I called out bad editing and overly obvious save stating during his UWW videos. His response was something like "WTF do you want from me? Do you ****ing know how hard it is to do a weekly review series about playing impossible games" (paraphrase) Which I further called him out because his series originally started as "no cheat codes, no SAVE STATES" and that I have no issue with him if he wishes to use SS, but he needs to be honest with his audience.

I did always enjoy his "oh you're going to die......... a lot" jokes though, only reason I kept watching his UWW videos.

He didn't do that much of them and isn't making those anymore, though.

Which is why I know longer watch his videos :)

And from what I recall he made "you're going to die a lot" in ever single UWW episode, someone can link me to a few where he doesn't but I'm pretty confident that was his
only
reoccurring joke

I'd like to think, this whole episode will in the long term help Spoony go back to the reviewer of old. In my opinion, since he joined TGWTG he kinda got lazy, Reviews were sporadic and the quality had dipped of late. He was given all expenses paid trips to places like PAX and E3 and was kinda piggybacking off the TGWTG name.

Hopefully he goes back to the beginning, releases regular reviews of his old quality, and sorts his mental issues out.

I also think it is a good choice to be not connected to TGWTG anymore.
I like the NC, but all the other reviewers seem like big manchildren to me. Just look at the anniversary movies.

It looks like primary school kids tried to film a movie. Even worse than "The Room"...

Spoony should just do "his thing", care for his health and try to accept some help from outside.

This stuff is such a waste of time, E3 is for the big albatrosses of the industry to make nasty, not to ruin the flow of internet reviewers (Giantbomb included in this) .

Right now, all I care is Part II to the Ultima 9 review.

Though I think JesuOtaku should tear up both Lupa and Spoony a new hole. Seriously, everything is blown out of proportion and it was all about a comment aimed at JesuOtaku, who did not bother mentioning it.

What was her perspective on all of this? Really, I know nothing. All I know is what Spoony, LordKat and Lupa has said. And I just want them to shut the hell up because in the end, JesuOtaku was pretty much the biggest victim and just ignored it.

Edit:

Then again, looking at her tweets, who are retweeting stuff from Phelleous and other comments in regard to the situation, it seems she's openly on the side of Lupa

Kind of disappointed at the childishness of everyone involved in this. (Not just Spoony). It seems the only person really taking this the right way is JesuOtaku.

Went and watched some old Videos and some new ones. I do think that he is entertaining when he puts the work in, some of his newer stuff i found good too.

Ultima IX and the Tekken movie video were pretty great imo.

LordKat is such a ham. He sounds (and looks) like a South Park character. This podcast is just as sad as Spoony's breakdown.

One good thing that comes out of this is no more Spoony videos with Film Brain.

The Spoony Experiment site is down?

Traffic overload or something else?

He changed the host mask thingie, so it will be available again for different people at different times, at least that's my experience with these things.

I agree with him on Grave of the Fireflies on being manipulative though, and that's probably the most controversial review he's done.

That Lordkat podcast, HOLY SHIT.

I think Grave IS kind of over-rated, but i don't think its manipulation is that bad, considering its cartoonmature, and that it's aimed at young people.
Cartoons (like comics) in general can play less than movies with subtlety, so they're bound to be (generally) more on the nose and manipulative than a movie, and those aimed at kids, especially so (i mean, look at Lion King or any other Disney movie).
That's why i think i cut it more slack than, say, a Shindler's List.

That said, i personally don't see anything particulary morally repulsing, about its (supposed) message to the young rebel generation.

-
Anyway yeah, i will continue to ignore any of these characters and watch Spoony's videos occasionally.
I really don't care what the guy does or say in his personal life, nor i want to get caught up on these internet dramas, unless i'm forced to (meaning: they involve me, somehow).

Sage does some good work with Anime Abandon (for the most part). I'm not quite a fan of his other stuff though.

As for the LordKat thing, it is best to listen to him up until he seriously suggests that Spoony should get a sex change. Everything after that just really starts to reflect poorly on his part.

I say LK should be banned from Channel Awsome.

LK has always been as asshole, and as far as I know no game publisher has a channel awesome blacklist (atleast ubisoft doesn't)

Well said.

I love Spoony's output, but he really is indefensible here. My problem isn't even the fact that he made the rape joke. I honestly don't care about that. It was in bad taste, but whatever. The problem is that someone did take offense with it and when they said something to him rather than acting like a man and apologizing, or just letting it go, he blew up and acted like a complete asshole. It sucks because his fans will keep stroking his ego and he's never going to change because of that.

Wow, this whole thing is kind of bizarre. I never really hear about TGWTG stuff outside of TGWTG or the affiliated websites. To see this on Neogaf is really odd, sadly it has to be about one of my favorite internet personalities having a freaking breakdown. Spoony always seemed to be pretty bi-polar, and drama-queenish in behind the scenes stuff/v-logs, however, he certainly turned self-destructive this time. I'll continue to follow his stuff, but he really seems like he needs some help.

while Spoony has been an ass on Twitter, at least he's keeping it off his site. he hasn't done a single video about it unlike LK who felt the need to spend an hour bitching about it and posting it on his site. he's not even involved with it. what a douche.

To be fair, Spoony posted it on Twitter. As far as I'm concerned once you start airing your business all over whatever social media you choose to use, then it's fair game for anyone to criticize or discuss. If you don't want people in your business then don't make it public.

So I used to watch Spoony's videos back when he first started out but haven't really been following him lately. A friend told me during dinner last night he has apparently gone crazy and become mentally unstable. Now I see this thread has exploded in the last few days.

Can someone please give me a summary of what exactly happened? How did he go insane?

Holy shit that Lordkat podcast is amazing!

The stuff he said in later streams was even worse. It's like he looked back at what he said in that podcast and 180'ed his opinion on everything except his hate for spoony.

Not wanting him to hurt himself and just wanting him to say he's sorry? That became put a gun in your mouth and spray your brains on the wall pls kthx.

Saying spoony's big crime was treating his fans like shit and demanding he apologize turned into him calling spoony's fans scums of the earth with shite taste...even offering fans of his livecast refunds if they also liked spoony just to get them off his site. Also claiming he would abuse and belittle anyone that even said they liked a single thing spoony has done till they leave his site.

Lordkat's meltdown has been much worse than Spoony's if you ask me. And as he has publicly stated that he lost job offers and interviews I wonder how much of that was from Noah and Joe overplaying rage at an E3 over a game everyone was pissed at...or from his Hatedick vids on his own site which exposed his character involving a member of The Tester. You'd think that would be a bit more destructive to getting interviews and such...and he's even admitted that incident cost him work.

Top Bottom
