The strangest 'Unauthorized guide' art out there

Oh man, this one too. Nintendo had some of the craziest print ads back then.

Oh my that takes me back. I haven't seen that ad since I was a kid.

Damn, seeing all those old Nintendo Power advertisements is making me all teary eyed. I'd give anything to be able to go back to those days, such a fucking incredible time period of my life.

The thing I wish, is that I had been able to get like every single item in every Power Catalog.
I got a number of things, but wish I could have gotten practically everything.

They all look like they're struggling to take a shit.

I had that guide as a kid, and this was my immediate impression. It was a limitless source of amusement at the time. I actually came into this thread with the intention of posting it along with that comment but WAY TO TAKE AWAY ALL MY FUN, HIVEMIND-GAF.

Did anybody else have this guide? Thing was huge! It was in tatters after my brother and I got done with it.

Yes I do! A friend in college had a perfect condition copy (ironically enough she didn't even own the game) and she gave it to me. Of course I had already beaten the game 6 years ago and had no real use for the guide but I like it as a collector's thing.

BTW this thread is fantastic!

How could you screw up drawing an angry bird?

Considering copyright law and all that: Purposely.

In this case it's probably just a case of "oh shit, I got ten minutes to capitalise on this new game and write/draw stuff for a PDF guide."

During the original NES rein there were a ton of crazy "how to win" or tips and tricks guides out there of all kinds. I remember being a kid in school when we'd have a book fair every year and always saw at least two of them. I remember buying one that had a red cover that wasn't too bad I think.

Was it How to Win At Nintendo Games? I wasnt around in the 80s but that one wound up in my posession somehow (i think i bought it for like a quarter as a kid at some flea market or something)

Oh, so THAT's who the "Brady" of "BradyGames" is...

Yeah, that's the one. I had that book (still do, somewhere...). Picked it up at EBGames way back in the day for like 3$ on clearance.

The guy, Brady, is on a lot of pages, while other pages have photos of the room he was playing in as the background.

It's a good book, actually. I was able to 100% DKC with it's help. But it was definitely unprofessional, to say the least. Typos, formatting errors (text overlaps, cutting off), images cut off the sides of the pages.

I think the thing I liked most about the unauthorized guides was it felt like you were reading a conversation instead of a book, if that makes any sense.

I had one of the How to Win at Nintendo Games VHS tapes. Had Top Gun, Platoon, and some other stuff on it.

I had this one. Read it cover to cover.

I also had the one withe the... cloud balls...?... in the OP.

We're pretty off-topic at this point, but...

In this first pic with the "Bonus Issue '95" contents, there's a tiny shot of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. When this issue debuted, they had not even announced Yoshi's Island as a game in development. I spotted this picture and called Nintendo's phone lines asking what game it was and they were either totally ignorant or feigned it. Within the next few months they announced its release, which was August (JP) or October (US/EU) of that year. I just always thought it was cool that I spotted the screenshot, like I had a secret window into the future....

Wow, that's cool. I can't believe they slipped up like that. You could have gone to your friends and been like "Nintendo's making a game where you're baby Mario riding Yoshi" and they would have thought you were crazy until it was announced and you could rub it in their faces.

Ah, here's the video I was thinking of. A different name than I had thought, but, ah well.

How to Score More Points on Nintendo Games

Yeah, I know, it's a bit of a different subject from the "strangest 'unauthorized guide' artwork" or the thread, but still funny.

I didn't really need the "tips," even at the time, I just loved anything about video games that I could find.

So, yes, this is what we did in the days before online video walkthroughs.

I remember those crappy game pro covers the editor in Chief four eyes dragon used to draw them, I guess he got a little better but even in the ps2 Xbox error he was pretty garbage
