The term R.I.P

Ah, death. The other thing that nonreligious types like myself have to awkwardly dance around, in addition to what to say when people sneeze.

I thought the coincidence remark was being sarcastic, of course the expressions are related. When I was around 12 y/o I started watching anime on Italian TV without any prior knowledge of Italian, within 2-3 of months I had a good grip of the basic meanings, and after a year I pretty much understood everything with the occasional unfamiliar word.
Getting the basics of German still took me about a year as well, but that was some very intensive studying.

No, you don't.

"I'm sorry for your loss" and "Salud" (Spanish for "Health") will both suffice.

Gesundheit?

I guess wishing someone good luck before, say a performance, is seen as mockery.

Sure, if you can't understand the difference between a person participating in a play and a couple who just announced their undying love for one another with the implication that they'll be together and committed to each other until one of them dies, then yeah, totally the same.

Is it acceptable if the wedding happened in Vegas in front of an Elvis impersonator?

Honestly?

I say "bless you" (when someone sneezes, only.. actually I say "Bless Ye"), "God damn it", "God knows" etc

You don't need to be religious to say these things.

I have no issues or qualms with it, just to get it out of the way. And afterlife/s aside I find the term "Rest in Peace" rather strange. I just thought about this for the last 5 minutes and thinking about it, isn't it more of a statement, rather than a wish?
Whoever has passed away would from then on be eternally resting in peace. it's hard to imagine how else would they be resting. I mean, wouldn't a person sleeping also be resting in peace? Assuming they aren't having violent nightmares and stuff, but then when they woke up they can proclaim that they were not resting in peace and it was awful.
I mean, I think Lie in Coffin would pretty much be on the same level as Rest in Peace.
You don't say to a newly wed couple "You are happy".

Weird.

No the equivalent of "You are happy" would be "Resting in peace", you're giving a statement of fact (assuming they really are happy).

When you say "Rest in Peace" it's equivalent to "Have a good day", "break a leg", "sleep well" etc.

I said "bless you" one time to a co-worker who had just sneezed and he said "no, thank you". LOL.

I don't think wishing someone luck is a bad form, it's just that "good luck" is somewhat underwhelming at a wedding. It's also not a substitute for "Congratulations". After congratulating them (on what has already happened), one can still wish a lot of happiness, luck, prosperity etc. and that wouldn't imply that the marriage is considered doomed.

Thanks to the people acting condescending in this thread I'm going to make a special effort to wish the bride and groom good luck at the next wedding I go to.

Why would you willfully make yourself look dumb?

It blows my fucking mind, that this isn't seen as ok.

Seriously.

it's all about the implication of potential failure.

you may not see it, but it's there. whenever I say or hear "good luck" it implies that there's a chance of something not working out.

I'd say if you want to get across the meaning that you THINK you are saying without pissing off people, try "best wishes". /shrug

or, if you want, just keep saying "good luck" and you can be known as the guy who says "good luck" at weddings.

Thats some brilliant reasoning.
SOMEONE SAID GOOD LUCK AT A TIME DEEMED INAPPROPRIATE FOR THAT PHRASE?!?!?!

OH SHIT

Keep repeating Rest In Peace. It sounds weird after a while.

I despise RIP and have almost made a thread on multiple occasions in order to rail on it. It's a useless statement of nothing, completely devoid of thought. When I see a obit thread that contains 15 posts in a row of RIP, I want to start throwing things.

Edit: I have mo problem with the phrase "Good Luck" and I spend a lot of my time onstage. Just not superstitious.

I must not be as pessimistic as some people. Because to me wishing someone good luck is a positive thing and in addition to whatever is already happening, as in, I hope even more good shit happens for you.
