The truth about Loki the wolfdog

It may not be a wolf but it is a very awesome dog.

I watched some documentaries about wolf dogs during one youtube binge, they do appear to be totally awesome animals but I do not like the idea of idiots having them as pets.

Yup. At some point it is theorized that dogs and wolves crossed thousands of years ago, and that's where the gene for black fur came from. Most wolves are now capable of throwing black phase pups out, especially Gray wolves. ;)

Here is a pretty high content black phase for our viewing pleasure! His name is Star-Lord!

Providing it were safe and humane, I'd fucking love a dog/wolf like this as a companion.

Wolf doggo

Agreed. Loki is awesome, and seems to have a happy life. And I agree again that I hate idiots having them (or having normal dogs and calling them wolfdogs).

It's all about proper education. Taking time to learn as much as you can, spending some time with some real ones and starting with a beautiful low content or a Nordic breed (Husky, Malamute, etc) if you didn't already experienced that in some capacity. Wolfdog ownership is fine with the proper people involved who are in full understanding of what they are getting into.

You can start by talking with me, if you are interested in this seriously. ;)

This is a beautiful animal.

I was expecting:

i feel like we get a weird amount of wolf dog threads

i think all three that I've seen have been Jaeger's.

I seem to remember that the first one was a sick informational post on the animals, then the second one was a post about planning get one. Half the responses were along the lines of "Didn't we just have a thread about how people are rarely qualified to care for them?" without realizing the OPs were the same.

Gotta get them sponsorships.

Wolfdogs are really neat to see in person but you can tell almost right away that their temperament is different than most dogs. I saw one at an adoption event last year. He was by himself in a large dog run area and was just pacing back and forth looking at the other dogs and people. I went up to the person who was working at the rescue and just said "Hey... Is that dog over there a... Well, you know". She nodded and said "We can't really talk about that here"

Shit was weird

I thought this was about some serious issue like animal abuse or something like that.

If you took the time to at least skim the article you would see that it is a serious issue. Animals get put down due to the wolfdog label.

I've heard that Wolfdogs are back and more dangerous than ever with real metal blades.

They really are not just for kids anymore.

Even for that (rather silly) goal, hybrids are not a better choice than dogs.

And seriously, hybrids just make bad pets, it sounds cool but it's almost always a bad idea, and people like the one the OP is talking about are spreading misinformation that can end end up hurting dogs, hybrids and other people.

What is it a hybrid of...?

What's so bad about a hybrid as a pet? Do they just not listen well or do they eat you in your sleep? Geniunely curious, I'd love to have a wolf like dog as a pet, but I guess you should stick to one like Loki? Or is that as bad too?

Cannot stand the machismo tendency people have when it comes to hybrids. Their temperament is far beyond what most owners are capable of dealing with and most that I've seen at my dog rescue were returned by owners who couldn't handle them. It's become a bit of a problem at the rescue I work with and the fact that many of these dogs get passed around from shithead owner to shithead owner just exacerbates many of their behavioral issues. They're a very demanding breed and can be exceptionally difficult to train the instinct out of. Like most demanding breeds, 90% of the owners out there vastly overestimate their ability to train them effectively.

Jesus Christ.

Its a mabari war hound. 0_0

1. I can't imagine giving a shit about this in any sincere sort of way.

2. Why in Odin's sacred fucking name would you name it Loki and not Fenrir?

Why are you being such a dick about this thread existing? It's apparently helped a few people better understand what's going on with wolfdogs (and regular dogs that people claim are wolfdogs). At the very least you could just ignore the thread instead of loudly proclaiming how much you don't like this thread and think its a waste of time.

I wouldn't mind having a low content wolfdog or a dog that kind of resembles a wolf if I could take care of them right. Wolves are quite majestic. The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, I'm told is more like a German Shepherd in terms of temperament but harder to train and is a recognized breed. It originated from crosses between German Shepherds and wolves in an attempt to create super German Shepherds. They look pretty awesome.

Why the fuck is that dog out in the open instead of doing his job guarding the gates of Hell?

Do other dogs even lift?

They just a lot more work than your average dog, in which the same can be said about a lot of specialized breeds. Huskies for instance can easily become bored with just sitting in front of a TV due to them being historically used as a work dog, and are prone to being destructive in attempts to stimulate themselves. They are also good climbers and are capable of easily scaling a 5 ft (or more in some cases!) fence. Wolfdogs are the same. And the more wolf (content) in a dog, the more those behaviors are intensified. Not bad animals, not bad animals by any means, just require a lot of care and attention. And of course, finances have to be right. Because building proper containment can cost upwards $10k in some places.

What is crazy is how many of those dogs labeled as wolfdogs are actually wolfdogs, and not just mislabeled nordic mutts? Wolfdogs are hard to get, and the amount of actual breeders is far less than the fake ones who just try to make a buck off malamute mixes. Real breeders screen and get to know potential buyers before allowing them to pick up the pup.

I'll give you an example of what I have to go though. I did an initial phone interview which lasted about an hour. Everything from my finances to my general knowledge of wolfdogs was questioned. I had to sign an agreement that if I fail to properly care for the animal, I am to give the dog back to the breeder. Dumping it off at a shelter is a big no-no. And before I can even pick him/her up I have to prove via video that I have proper containment already set up. Another intentional hurdle to only bring in serious buyers is the pricing. My pick of a 2018 litter was $3500.00. So any ol' person couldn't just decide they wanted one and go and get one. Those instances are rare and usually unheard of.

This is why learning to properly identify a wolfdog from a Husky Mutt is very crucial. With all that said, the work you do is wonderful and I personally appreciate everything shelters try to do in caring for these animals. Dog and wolfdog alike!

Czech wolfdogs are awesome. I can help you out with that as well, in terms of locating the right breeder for you.

I would totally get a wolf dog if I was rich and had no work obligations. They look awesome :o

:)

Sorry, I didn't mean to just waltz into a thread and shit on the mere existence of it. It was more along the lines of a "Oh this dude is popular on instagram and lied about something, let's all clutch our pearls" sort of reaction. Kind of like the first post, in fact.

But hey, it spawned a thread about wolfdogs and hybrids, so cool. Didn't mean to come across as so dismissive of what some people are clearly passionate about.

You gave enough of a shit to come in here and post.

You meant to do exactly that, and your post reflects it.

Why the hell are people being so dismissive and disrespectful in this thread?

OP, having read the article and skimmed your previous thread, I can see what the problem is now (I didn't really understand before). So this guy is basically:
1. Putting Loki at risk by saying "it's a wolfdog" because the laws regarding wolfdogs are pretty serious should anybody decide to report the dog as threatening, and
2. Putting other people and proper wolfdogs at risk by misrepresenting wolfdogs as just dogs that look like wolfs, and not entirely different animals with completely different lifestyles, requirements, etc.

Is that correct?

That is it exactly, sir! Poor animals have been removed from their homes or worse due to being mislabeled as a wolfdog. It's a big mess and one that is easily remedied with proper education on the subject. I really appreciate your trying to understand why this is serious for me, and many many others.

I am a member of the Florida Lupine Association (now known as the National Lupine Association). Educating and being an advocate for the breed is what I do. I try to be the voice for the animal when they don't have one. And history has taught us that man has a prejudice against this animal in the States.

EDIT: Last I checked Loki has well over a million followers on Instagram, and who knows how many with every news article that he been featured on. Sadly the damage has already been done.

Thanks for the info and link! My gf loves wolves (they're beautiful animals), so I'll share this stuff with her.

If you ever need any information please don't hesitate to seek me out. I also have an instagram as well, where I try to be as informative as possible. Eventually when my own new member of my family arrives I will give them a social media platforms to help combat misinformation about the breed.

What is it a hybrid of...?
It's not a hybrid, it's a dog, canis lupus familiaris.
If you're wondering about the breed, it's a Cane Corso.
Not all of them look like a God of War mini-boss by the way. In fact, they're quite beautiful animals.

I was just making a point about how dogs can be just as scary as wolf-dog hybrids. Also, it's a cool picture.

p.s.
Fuck cropping ears.
