The Twelfth Doctor revealed: Peter Capaldi

Is this the first time in recent memory that (non-hormonal) fans have almost unanimously liked the new Doctor from the start?

The reaction to him does seem to be overall much more positive than it was for Smith.

I know this all has me excited for Doctor Who again. I just got tired of Smith and the whole River storyline and basically the show in general after 7A. Still haven't watched last year's Christmas special or 7B, and honestly I'm in no hurry to.

Ah, okay. I just saw one with it saying Mr. Bean as the Doctor. I laughed a lot when I saw it.

Uh. The Snowmen *is* last year's Christmas Special.

So, only being into Doctor Who since the 2005 restart, I wonder how I'm going to find a 55 year old playing a doctor. I'm sure the people who are fans of the old ones aren't going to have any trouble at all (and yeah, if the take is good and this version of the doctor is interesting/the actor is good age doesn't matter at all)

In case anyone's wondering, here are the ages of the actors playing the doctors (when they first started playing them):

1st - 55
2nd - 46
3rd - 51
4th - 40
5th - 30
6th - 41
7th - 44
8th - 37
9th - 41
10th - 34
11th - 28
12th - 55

Let us not forget John Hurt who is 73.

Nice. I love the current Sonic Screwdriver design, but I'm kind of hoping they go for another redesign to fit Capaldi. That's instant money for BBC, if they're smart. :lol

Oh my.

I now hope that this is how Matt dies. It would be hilarious and would be good that it was a accident instead of save the world/life of someone.

Anywayz: I wanted a girl, then when it was rumored I wanted Misha Collins (Knew THAT was less likely than a girl) but after seeing some videos (before the nvielng, since it was rumored) I really like Peter Capaldi and can't wait to see him in action!

They'll certainly replace it, as Moffat said he believed that every Doctor should have "their own". Also, Matt's current one is intrinsically linked, design-wise, to the old control room - the gold, the links back to 9/10's coral, which that control room still had. I imagine he'll get one more like the current control room.

Man, Hartnell looked terrible for 55. I would have him pegged at least in his late sixties.

Okay, fan fiction time.

Tennant is #10. He used up a regeneration to heal a Dalek shot, so he is technically regeneration #11. Which makes Smith #12. Adding Hurt, Smith is actually #13, also known as the last one according to old canon.

Then we have Capaldi who is an old man again (Exactly as old as Hartnell!) after a significantly younger Smith.

Calling it. Whatever happens to Smith resets his regeneration limit in the process. Capaldi is the first of the next thirteen Doctors. This fixes the limit issue while not outright eliminating it, so a future writer decades later could deal with it all over again.

I'm surprised they went with an older actor, but Capaldi already seems like he'll fit the character so well. He really does seem like an older Tennant.

I don't think it really counts as a regeneration unless the Doctor has actually changed. Smith has also used regeneration energy once or twice during his run, but you wouldn't count that toward the overall total, otherwise we'd have fractions of regenerations to deal with.

My personal thoughts on the matter, the total amount of times ALL the Doctors have used regeneration energy (to not regenerate but for other stuff) would cause them to lose one regeneration in total (not necessarily all the energy it takes for one whole one, but simply not having enough energy left for a 12th regeneration due to using part of that regeneration energy elsewhere).

Remind me when Smith has used it.

I think that the time Tennant did it should definitely count, because he used up all of the energy required to change, he just didn't use it for changing. As far as I know (started watching classic Who just recently so correct me if I'm wrong) the limit was explained with the regeneration juice simply running out. So using it should still count as using it.

Remind me when Smith has used it.

The one I remember as I saw it recently, used it to heal River in Angels Take Manhattan. And yes I do agree a 12th regeneration for him should not be possible (in the regular way, they're going to come up with something I Know), I don't necessarily agree with him using up ALL the energy he would've used for a regeneration (since Smith used it as well), just that he doesn't have enough left for a complete regeneration.

The Timelords had the ability to approve additional cycles or regenerations- they gave the Master a new set of 13 for the Time War. I'm assuming the limit is legal instead of biological.

Also, when Smith guest starred on the Sarah Jane Adventures, he claimed he could regenerate 507 times. Of course, this could be another case of "Rule #1: The Doctor lies."

They really did the impossible here, they got me to care about Who again. I'm sure it's still gonna be the same show that I tuned out of pretty fast, but I cannot miss seeing how this is going to go.

The Doctor Who fans didn't really come together and threads didn't really take off on here till like series 3, so I'm not really surprised the first regeneration of NuWho didn't garner much attention.

Yeah, NuWho hadn't even begun broadcasting in 'Murica yet, so the GAF fanbase probably hadn't formed at that point.

But Matt got a new one from his "Retro Console" control room after it rebooted and got rid of the "Coral" design. So it should be more linked to that one design wise.

But yes, new Doctor needs a new wand. 11 handled this great in his first episode with the old one melting and the control panel giving him a shiny new green LED.

I still love Retro though. All the weird doo-dads everywhere. It's like it was designed by an Applebee's. Neon doesn't have the same effect somehow. I assume 12 will end up using it for most of his run just to get the money's worth. (It's only half a season old.)

Perhaps a natural way for the old screwdriver to go is for him to give it to River. I know it doesn't exactly match the one she had in the Library, but she wasn't Amy and Rory's daughter then either.

GUYS GUYS. Imagine Capaldi doing the "Colonel Runaway" speech. So good.

The Series 5 control room still has the coral, just much less pronounced. That's what I meant by it having 'links back to' the coral. 9/10's is basically made from the coral, and looks like that TARDIS. The series 5 console has elements of the coral in addition to its bronze/gold featuring, and the screwdriver sort of channels that.

I imagine they'll do a whole new one for this new console room and Capaldi.

Behind the scenes - they probably didn't want to change console room with Smith at all, but when they moved studios they realized that due to the way they'd built the 'retro' console room that in moving it they'd basically destroy the set and have to rebuild it over. Its multi-levelled design was thanks to the Torchwood Hub, which it was built on top of. You can even line up where stuff was in the hub if you look carefully! Because of the nature of the Torchwood set, a lot of that set was concrete, and so that's what the retro TARDIS was built on top of. You can't really move concrete, so they were screwed. You can blame all this on Neil Gaiman, as the only reason they didn't build it on top of the coral TARDIS was because he asked Moffat to keep it standing for The Doctor's Wife!

It's fairly safe to hypothesize Moffat was planning to redo the console room for 12 anyway, so he just moved it forward rather than rebuild the retro one from scratch then tear it down again.

Mind you, The Snowmen still kind of sucks

For a Doctor Who episode that includes a new companion, Ian McKellen, and Richard E. Grant it was very underwhelming yeah. Setting the tone for the rest of Series 7 I guess.

So APZ, you think they'll do yet another redesign for Capaldi? I quite like the new plain console, think it'll suit his Doctor well.
