I do not want to single out specific people, but I have been seeing many cases of people here using 'Should of' in place of 'Should have/ Should've'. Eg. I should of bought Witcher 3

To be honest, I was unaware of the widespread use of 'Should of' until I started visiting this forum. I guess people get confused as this sounds like 'Should have' when it is said outloud?

That's exactly the reason why. I should of known someone would get uptight about it.

I should of paid more attention in school so that I would of learned better. But I might of not learned anyway so I could of just wasted my time trying.

So what happened is "should have" became the contraction "should've", which sounds like "should of" to people who haven't seen "should've" in print.

Language evolves, quit holding on to the past.

I sincerely hope you're trolling. Because 'should of' doesn't sound remotely evolved. If anything, it makes the person sound illiterate. Unless in your opinion butchering the English language is a form of evolving...

The actual goddamn dictionary definition of 'literally' is 'not literally' so I wouldn't be surprised if could of is an okay thing to say in a few years.

The thing I hate about should of is that it doesn't make any sense. It's one of those things where you don't even have to know the original expression, just by looking at the sentence it would automatically look wrong. I take shoulda, coulda, woulda any day.

By the way who says should've is better to use than should of? Before grammar was law people would write anything and everything to fill up a page with whatever sounded like they were trying to convey. Only after the grammar police took over did that become illegal

And before grammar, there was a dark time. When the old symbols were lost but the new ones were still in chaos.
Seriously, China can only communicate because of their unified written language.
Grammar had the same effect here. There are some local dialects that are harsh on most people, heck some Germans have problems with Swiss-German.

So go grammar, you should've been the king from the get go.
