The Verge: Microsoft's new Xbox will include improved Siri-like speech recognition

I like the idea of the "Xbox on" command. It may look like a detail, but one of the nice things with kinect navigation is that you don't have to turn all the cushions to find the remote ; only it only works once it's been turned on, so you still have to find that damn remote first (or walk to the console like a caveman of the XXth century :P).
And of course using natural language instead of rigid commands is probably much more comfortable.

Talking to my console isn't really something I've been needing or wanting, so this does little for me.

People said the same thing about smartphones but it turns out that in fact, using Google Now or Siri actually is faster than going to manually look up something yourself. You see, kids and younger generations are more open-minded to these kinds of things and have already adopted them. They are breeding out old timers like you who would prefer nothing but old technology.

Get on board or get left behind.

Yep, waited for this to be posted.
Accents and whatnot.

I always hated typing messages to friends, even with the chatpad. Being able to speak the text would be awesome

I expect you'll be able to do something like this, very easily.

"Xbox, message rinse82, lets play call of duty, I'll invite you to a party"

And it will work, and work fast. I have been able to do this with my smartphone for like 2 years already.

I thought MS might do this. Voice recognition is clearly the most useful part of the current Kinect.

However I really do not enjoy voice control on my phone or on console or any other device. Too gimmicky and awkward.

My main question is does this further confirm that leaked document with Kinect Glasses and does it further confirm that MS is going for the Holodeck Living Room

I'm not getting my "hopes" up, but I can't stop thinking about it too.

Wow if it's Siri like maybe it will work 50% of the time instead of the 25% of the time it does now!

Have you used Google Voice? It is pretty impressive.

I love how with no pomp or announcement Google releases a app that is better in every way compared to Siri apple marketing cornerstone for the new phones.

This only lends credence to Edge's article. Natural voice recognition requires a constant online connection.

Can you play iPhone games when data connection is down?

This is a natural evolution of a voice recognition system.

Is Google Voice the same thing as whatever Google's voice recognition software is? I thought Google Voice was strictly for making voice calls. In either case, Google's voice recognition technology *is* pretty amazing. I was able to sing various songs to it and have it properly detect the lyrics.

Wonder if Sony will also have those features in their new PSEye:

Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft is continuing to invest heavily in motion-control interfaces, and a new, more reliably responsive Kinect will also ship alongside the next Xbox. Sony’s next-generation console camera system is said to have a similar set of features, and is expected to be discussed at the company’s PlayStation event on February 20.

I don't like preempting voice commands with "Xbox." It's a dumb name to say aloud. Might be petty, but there's got to be another way.

Thought the way DoubleFine went with "hey television" instead is way funnier, but still kind of awkward. Anyways, Google's voice recognition is probably the best of the lot right now. Even then I only really use it to set alarms or input addresses for navigation. Not an essential feature, even when it's perfect.

The problem with this kind of tech is that its heavily regionalized; Are we going to see a repeat of the situation with Kinect where Mexican was supported much earlier on than proper Spanish?

I just see MS doubling-down again on the NA market to the detriment of their global success.

Amen. Even when I try to mess up Google Voice, she gets it right.

If you have an iOS device, just download the Google Search app. Then click on the microphone and be amazed. Chrome iOS has it too, but she doesn't speak in that app.

There will always be areas more favored than others, but hopefully MS used kinect and the last few years as training ground to be ready to support advanced feature in several languages. That's probably the idea behind tools like the kinect voice studio, that had you say multiple complex sentences to help voice recognition.

I didn't think I'd like it, but I use it quite a bit. Getting sports scores, weather, starting apps etc is much faster using it. Google Voice is far superior though, but unfortunately on iOS it requires an app to run.

Google is superior for finding specific things and getting a result, but Siri actually responds, so I find it better for certain no-screen tasks that require further input or additional info. Like I can set a meeting in Siri without taking my phone out (I just use earbuds with a mic), and if there's a conflict, it'll tell me in a response, ask what to do, etc. I've had whole back-and-forth text exchanges with other people while walking my dog in the park, keeping my hands nice and warm in my gloves. I like that part.

Anyways I'm as surprised as you at the amount of cloud-yelling over voice commands. Voice isn't great for everything of course but it is just plain way faster in lots of situations. Objectively faster. At least, when it works. When it breaks you feel like a huge loser. :) Maybe that's why...

I look forward to seeing what MS has come up with, and maybe Sony as well. I never did really understand why MS "bundles" voice with Kinect though, I guess it's supposed to be a natural-user-interface catch-all brand or something, but lots of what is cool about Kinect (voice commands) could have been accomplished with the normal Xbox headset or old Vision camera...

And to think, 10 years ago had you told people that Microsoft would be trying to stash a camera in your living room and be able to see and hear everything you do and that consumers would be ok with this you would be laughed at.

I didn't use Siri when I had an iPhone, and I don't use S Voice on my Galaxy S3. At all. It's just completely useless to me unless i'm web browsing & need to google something quick. Are people really going to use this on a daily basis, for everything?

Cool feature, yes. System selling feature, absolutely not. I'm fine with pressing 1 button on my controller to do the same thing. Plus it forces me to bend over and pick it up. Sometimes I NEED that exercise.

Voice recognition when I'm driving a car and trying to make a phone call is cool. Voice recognition allowing me to be even lazier than I am when I push a few buttons to play a videogame is just ridiculous.

hmmm.....well I have Siri but absolutely never use it.

And I rarely use the Xbox voice stuff because it's too cumbersome to remember the specific voice commands.

Never underestimate the laziness of users. ;)
We already invented a device to replace buttons that were only a few steps away.

Using voice controls is no more absurd. It makes more sense actually, since you're always carrying your voice with you.

I wish Sony would get on this. I use Siri all the time. There's no faster way to set an alarm, or check a sports score. I want voice recognition on everything.

There's nothing to remember. Say Xbox and anything that it shows on the screen in white text is a command. It's actually very cool already. Cant wait to see whats next.

Using voice to turn/off on your Xbox 720 system, voice to text so no need for a keyboard, voice for Xbox 720 dashboard navigation and searches. Voice to play a game, music, apps, options etc you name it! With this do we even need a headset for Xbox live party chats? This sounds fucking awesome!

Google responds too. As much as Siri does. For things Siri doesnt know, she asks if you want a web search of it whereas Google Search doesn't waste your time asking, it just does the search. It's a much much better design/implementation.

Pretty sure they're not calling this a system selling feature. Just one of many features.

But I want Google Now voice recognition

You know what? If Sony is smart and wants some extra edge over Xbox, they should look into a deep partnership with Google where PS4 comes fully integrated with Google Now Voice, Chrome browser, Google TV, YouTube, Gmail, Google+ etc. That would give MS some food for thought :)

Playing a videogame typically requires a controller so there isn't that much of a need to use your voice. Anything that doesn't require a controller (e.g. motion games, apps, media playback, watching TV) would benefit pretty heavily from this.

Who said it's just for video games? Do you enjoy holding a controller when you watch movies? Or searching for a remote to pause, fast forward, rewind? Potentially great feature, but only if they improve upon the horrible performance of the current iteration.

Google's response to that would be, "Why do we need Sony?"

I worry about the sanity of the people on gaf..lol

This is incredible news. Voice recognition is the future of technology. Millions upon millions of people will use it.

Sony's answer could be "Because we're not Microsoft or Apple."

Very cool, I use Kinect mainly for voice stuff now, works good. If it#s going to work even better and has more functions - sign me up.

Siri is nothing but a gimmick and this will probably be one too. I mean whats quicker grabbing a controller and pressing a button or saying Xbox on, bearing in my mind you are going to have to pick up the controller anyway.

Well, now we know why it requires always-on internet connection. Natural language recognition = cloud processing.

:-/

i don't see why that would be the case. siri and other similar software may require an internet connection to function but you can still play games on phones when not online.

Whats quicker:

Saying "Xbox Latest Xbox Live Arcade release"

Or

Navigating to that page with a controller

I can navigate to the desired marketplace page quicker with voice. Now if that's due to the great voice recognition or the bad menus is another question. Both maybe ;)
