The Verge: 'The Xbox One X probably isn't for you'

I love it. Battlefield 1, Horizon, The Surge, all made the purchase worthwhile. Doesnt help any that the ds4 is a far better controller than the xbox ones. Same goes for the ps4 os vs xbox one os.
Honestly I would like for microsoft to give me a reason to get a oneX they simply havent yet. As I said earlier maybe after a price drop and better 1st party games are on the horizon. Gears is the only ms 1st party franchise that I have any remote interest in.

I really enjoyed Uncharted 4 on the Pro. Playing Persona 5 some now which is real cool but doesn't have much of a Pro update. I'm looking forward to the X man, don't sell the ecosystem short. Some of the exclusives got a bad rep because the zeitgeist has been leaning against XBOX but I'm really looking forward to the 4K updates.

I can't really understand the hype around the X.

In the thick of the action the difference between checkerboard and native 4K is hardly noticeable without side-by-side Digital Foundry comparisons, so compared to a PS4 Pro you're looking at an ever so slightly sharper image and a few less jaggies for a lot more money (and a much smaller library of games).

And compared to a PC you're looking at 'very high' settings but with the frame rate locked to 30fps (with a few exceptions), which is basically a deal breaker for anyone looking for a 'premium' gaming experience. Even on price the software for consoles is expensive enough that over a 5 year period you'd probably save money by building a PC and sticking to Steam sales.

It's a gorgeous looking piece of hardware, but I can't quite justify why people would be excited about it. Is it just a fanboy thing?

For me, as an owner of a Pro. It's not rational I know but if the best console version is on the One X I'll be wanting the One X. It's just like when I did the majority of my gaming on PC and I couldn't use certain settings without impacting performance I would start looking at new video cards.

The library thing, I guess for new titles yea. But I actually appreciate the back compat on XB1 especially as someone who skipped the 360. Also the Pro support has been really weird or just nonexistent. It appears MS put more things in place to provide benefits even if the developer doesn't.

As far as the PC comments. I used to almost exclusively do my gaming on PC. Problem is, as I hit 30+ fewer of my irl friends/family play on PCs. Also when you have a family you can't easily have gaming PCs in all the rooms. With a console not only is it more cost effective but MS & Sony have made it pretty easier to share my games across them. I prefer Microsoft's method due to how quick and simple the cloud saves are.

I know all about the ecosystem - I've had an xbox one twice this gen. Big part of why I'm so sceptical about buying in again lol.

I'm loving the utterly cynical and disingenuous posts I'm seeing in a lot of these threads. Where people pretend to be confused about why people would be interested in this machine.

It's the same reason some of us brought a PS4 Pro last year when it launched, it's the best console in it's lineup if you want and can afford all the bells and whistles. Why people over complicate this is baffling.

Nobody at The Verge shops at Walmart where there are 55" 4K TVs for less than $500. I bought mine from Costco earlier this year and guess what? I'm starved for 4K content because my OG Xbox One can't stream UltraHD content so I'm forced to use my TV's crappy apps and half the time I can't get audio working (ARC) to my HTS.

When you buy a 4K TV, everything else needs to be upgraded.

I wait with bated breath at The Verge's $1,000 iPhone 8 review.

All good points, thanks for the measured discussion.

And yeah for sure at the least it already appears like the X will get more support than the Pro did, Microsoft are really investing in it whereas the Pro sometimes feels a bit forgotten outside of first party,

The circle of people I would unambiguously say should get an X is pretty small, and the same is true of the Pro. But all of those (and a lot of people outside that circle) will be really happy with it.

I like new toys. You might be right. Who knows.

SO since you have developed the reputation of being in the know for what MS thinks of Xbox

So the Xbox division is doomed?

I don't really see a connection between those posts and what I said. I think MS is currently more optimistic than they were a few weeks ago, with pre-orders coming in a bit better than market indicators were pointing too. I'm very curious to see how it does in the fall and over the next two years.

Asking for your insight. Many people here state you are a developer who has great insight of what goes on and the inner-thinking of the Xbox division. SInce you have never corrected them, I am taking it as truth.

Last year it appeared, you alluded to Scorpio needing to make a big impact for the division to continue. It's NOT going to make a big impact, it's a niche product (which you state yourself).

So are you an insider? Is this niche product enough to keep the division alive?

It very well could be. Even if it's total sales are niche, if it gives some good momentum behind the Xbox brand, that could have a big effect. Or it could bomb and MS still decides to continue in the Xbox venture. Time will tell.

Magic 8 ball.

Thanks for clearing something up for me.

Just curious - since you have never corrected people who state you are developer - are you a developer or do you do corporate communications? I don't see a lot of overlap in those two career paths.

Umm ok.

If you are asking me to predict the future, well I can't do that. No one can. I can give a window into what is happening now on some issues, and offer my thoughts on the future. That's what I try to do.

Sooo, in your personal opinion, not that of the way things will go, do you think that the XBOX Division will begin to invest more studios to develop games which are exclusive to PC/XBOX? Phil has made comments eluding as to their importance for the division and brand, so I would hope so, even if it is for the next XBOX (Assuming there is one).

well those were odd comments to hold on to...

Why? Asked for his insight.

If he's the insider that he has the reputation for, and since a year ago he alluded that the Scorpio needed to do really well for the Xbox division to continue, I asked for his updated insight.

There has also been questions in the past of whether or not Matt is truly an insider and this will give him his chance to shine.

It's also a bit confusing as his reputation is that he's a developer, but according to this:http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=33733476&postcount=78
He's in corporate communications.

It's a fair point.

But there's a shitload of enthusiasts around these days and when your machine is head and shoulder THE standout machine for enthusiasts then it's a free run at that market.

This is quite a non answer.

Dude, I have seen you, much to my joy, call out the bullshitters and hypocrites time and time again. I hope you get tagged with Sherlock. I really do.

"Takes no shit, Sherlock"

Make it so.

Alternative:

"No Bullshit, Sherlock". Of course each word links to specific call-out posts.

The whole 4K console push with PS4 Pro and XBX is one of the reasons I went back into PC gaming. 4K just ain't for me, 60FPS however is something I do want from my games. 144fps is even better, and it's something I instantly feel when playing a game at that refresh rate.

1080p/144hz g sync monitor and a GTX 1080 powering it. Cost a shit load more than a XBX or PS4Pro, but it offers exactly what I want. Keeping my PS4 and Switch around for the worthwhile exclusives though, I'm not a frame rate or resolution snob when it comes to quality games.

I don't have any reason to think MS is about to open up a bunch of new studios.

Well I'm literally being asked to predict the future. What am I supposed to say?

As far as I know, his merits as an insider hasn't been questioned by anyone important.

That is a click baity asf title you got there Verge.

"Unless you have a 4k TV!!!"

giphy.gif

...or a 1080p TV to enjoy the benefits of downsampling for all higher resoltuion games, better textures, better texture filtering or if you enjoy more stable performance in all other XBO games, Xbox One BC games etc etc

The actual text of the article doesn't really warrant the silly title. They got my click though, don't spend it all in one place.

The PS4 cost less than the competition.

For about 7 months.

Yeah, usually when someone here posts as if he has inside information, she/he's verified by mods. Sometimes they have tags.
The only tag is the "Bish" tag that I'm aware of. And correct me if I'm wrong but even then he could only verify with Sony contacts. That's why people like Stinkles and the head of Moon Studios don't have those tags for example.

There is also a mod that can verify with Square Enix I believe but beyond that there have been more than one posters who state they have inside info but could never be validated unless they screwed up and stated something specific that turned out to be false
