I love this book so much, although it makes me so depressed whenever a new volume comes out. At the end of Vol 8 I was crying like I've never done at any movie, comic or TV show (bar We3 perhaps), it was such a horrible, gutwrenching experience that if I ever meet Kirkman I'll have to punch him in the face for making me go through it (and then hug him like the big ol teddy bear he is). Vol 9 was a great epilogue to the trauma and gutted me in an entirely different way. I keep lending this out to friends and just waiting for them to shout at me for traumatising them so badly. :lol
You know a comic book is wretching when it makes We3 fans cry like little girls.

After "Made to suffer", I think Kirkman is an equal opportunity sadist. Age, sex, and race no longer matter. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the series ends with Rick turning into a zombie and mauling his own son.

I need to pick up on this where I left off. I think the last one I read was where
they escape from the town where they were held captive by the one guy.

I assume Kirkman's joy at
doing terrible terrible things to his characters will continue?

I couldn't take it. It would only be bearable if his son shot and killed him while trying to eat him.

You have no idea.

You have no idea. There's plot sodomy with plenty of sand and not a drop of lube. On an unparalled scale. You'll be bawling by the end of the next book.

My girlfriend introduced me to this comic a few months ago and I fell in love (with both).

Can't wait for issue #64! Is the consensus that
Dale is fucked
?

I keep hoping Kirkman will find some closure to the current characters and their story and jump ahead to the world 5-10-15 years down the line. I feel like after the whole Prison story and the Governor's assault that they've pretty much run the course and that making a shift like that would be good for the series.

Getting kinda numb to Rick and co.'s problems as they continue to pile on... maybe that's what RK is going for though.

I've considered picking up The Compendium:

C112129.jpg

48 issues for $38 is a pretty good deal.

I ordered this over a month ago from amazon while it was in still stock, no flashing warning saying low stock left or whatever, and now its on backorder. I need my zombie fix dammit, you make me cry amazon; ;

The only problem that I have with the comic is that the writer seemingly wants to outdo himself with crazy shit in every new arc. It gets ridiculous at times.

This comic is brilliant. I started reading a few months ago and imo the zombie apocalypse subject is outstanding. I know a lot of crazy shit happens, but man I can totally see the human race acting the way they do in the comic.

The prison arc is one of the best stories I've read in comics.

I love how the characters die rather "ungloriously"

It doesn't feel like the problems are piling on. It has a keep moving mentality. Things come and go but you'll never be able to settle down again. As long as the writer can keep setting goals the characters are working towards (like currently heading towards
Washington
) and then those goals wrap up either positively or negatively and they can move on I'd be happy.

One of the best parts is it feels like every one is expendable. I wouldn't put it past him to kill Rick or his kid off. Hell I sort of expect it, because of this I even expect the story to continue on past them. Maybe introduce a new character, or a character that's already been introduced. Realize hell, I've just read 30 issues with this non-lead character. I do feel like I know him well and I am interested in what his wants and needs are and how he goes about achieving them in a zombie infested world.

Robert Kirkman has got a grip on character that few other writers, in the comics medium or otherwise, can match. He also seems to enjoy doing horrible things to said characters the minute you get attached to them. He's like the entire writing staff of Lost rolled into one horrible, bearded man. I'd recommend Invincible to anyone reading this, it IS a superhero book (which I can't blame anyone for being burned-out on). But it's creator-owned and unhindered by the need to sell backpacks. Kirkman doesn't pull any punches in that book either, don't get too attached to anyone.

I couldn't forgive Robert Kirkman for what he did to wrap up the prison story. I forgot the issue numbers but you know what I'm talking about... I liked those characters too much.

I've read through all 4 of the Hardcovers. Any word on the release date of 5?
im guessing after December cause each hardcover has 3 issues inside, and the third issue after the release of book 4 comes out in December.

but yea the series is good, but like others the constant torture that the characters go through is sickening and puts me off a bit, like throw em a bone why don't you

fuck

Wish I would have bought the compendium when it was cheap ...now it's like $90 =(

Oh well, guess I'll have to buy the individual books if I dig 'em

I'm actually jumping into these next week.. Just started getting into comics, and started out with Watchmen. This'll be the next thing.

I like them, I just wish the art made it easier to distinguish between characters, particularly the females. I like how the zombies have become almost an environmental hazard, rather than the focus. I just wish Kirkman had a more survivalist mindset. They could have TOTALLY fortified that prison with anti-vehicle trenches, reinforced berms, etc. Liked the garden idea though.

I'm kinda getting bored of the on-the-run, villian-of-the-story-arc plotting. I'm ready for Kirkman to address some of the other interesting aspects of a zombie apocalypse, like reconstructing society, developing a method of dealing with the zombie horde, maybe even discovering the cause, etc...

The prison was the worst for this, Lori, Maggie, and Michonne were the only ones you could reliably tell apart. Carol, Andrea, Patricia, and Alice were interchangeable. Thank goodness Amy and Donna bit it before they made it that far.

Heh, I was looking at the Wikipedia entry, and saw that Walking Dead is available as:

1) Single issues
2) 6-issue paperbacks
3) 12-issue hardbacks
4) 24-issue deluxe hardbacks
5) 48-issue paperback

That's some hardcore double-dipping. I wonder what they'll do for the 96-issue collection, maybe an electronic edition.

Andrea has developed a unique personality recently. She's kind of turned into a hardcore badass. At first she was just a smart-ass and mostly interchangeable with her sister.

When I was re-reading volumes 1-8 in preparation for 9, I noticed they interchanged the two sisters at the beginning of the story; Andrea and her sister who I don't remember her name since it's been awhile, but was there any explanation on why the artist changed them? I never noticed it at first but now I'll always be curious. Maybe they just liked the character model better for the other one?

I'm 99% sure the hardcovers have 12 issues in them.

Yeah, she's been a badass for awhile. I can't help thinking there's a little bit of Kate from Lost in her.

She's easily my favorite character, with Carl bringing up second. He's a bad little fucker.
Couldn't believe what he did to Billy
I only hope my son can be that badass when the zombie apocalypse finally happens.

Getting back to Andrea, I think Kirkman has some big plans for her considering
Dale's fucked, or eaten, and the boys aren't around anymore.
She's not gonna be held back anymore, though I won't forgive him if he ever does the unthinkable to her.

And people talking about the art, it's never been better. The first guy only did 6 issues before the current artist took over and he is fucking awesome.

I'm hoping to see a spinoff series eventually. It would be cool to follow another group somewhere else in the United States...possibly with an accelerated timeline so they can meet up with Rick at some point.

I can see them getting to Washington, something obviously going to shit and a lot of them dying,
they won't find out what causes the zombies
.

This will cause the series to shift forward a couple of years to when Carl is around 16, and maybe shift the focus from Rick to Carl.

That's what Kirkman should do when he finally does kill off Rick.

Seems like it would be less interesting to follow a character who barely remembers what pre-apocalypse life was like. But maybe not, with Kirkman writing it.

Please no. The thing that killed superhero books for a long time for me is the fact that I can't follow a story without picking up a bunch of tie-ins. Keep it concise.
I wouldn't mind seeing an arc in the book that follows something like that though.

Frank Darabont writing and directing zombie series for AMC

Frank Darabont circles zombies
AMC attacks comic series adaptation

AMC is venturing into zombie-drama territory with multi-hyphenate Frank Darabont.

Cabler is close to finalizing one of the richest development deals ever with Darabont to write and direct a series adaptation of the Image Comics graphic novel series "The Walking Dead," penned by Robert Kirkman. Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Pictures and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion are also on board to exec produce.

Project is set among a group of zombie survivors of an apocalypse who are led by a police officer, Rick Grimes, in search of a safe place to live. Numerous editions of the "Walking Dead" graphic novels have been published since 2003.

Joel Stillerman, AMC's senior veep of programming, production and original content, said the project appealed to the cabler because of "the quality of the storytelling" in Kirkman's work. The series will stay faithful to the tone of the original novels, he said.

"This is not about zombies popping out of closets," Stillerman said. "This is a story about survival, and the dynamics of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these circumstances. The world (in 'Walking Dead') is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated way."

Stillerman noted that the cabler's annual "Fear Fest" movie showcase around Halloween is one of AMC's most popular programming events of the year.

"We've got an audience that loves this kind of material," he said.

Darabont and Hurd pitched the project to AMC and several other outlets. There is no studio attached yet. The duo's involvement made the project a must-have for the cabler, Stillerman said.

"These are two world-class filmmakers who are also brilliant storytellers with experience in the fantasy genre," he said.

Fucking megaton.

I fucking hate Walking Dead. Mainly for the fact I began reading them in TPB form and it takes forever for the new one to come out. Right now I'm lost and not sure what book I'm on...and the new one comes out tomorrow!!!

Wow, that's quite a coup. I am a little nervous though, AMC is having a lot of original series in the works... hope the quality does not get diluted in turn.

I really liked Invicible. Awesome twists and very unlike most super hero comics. One wonders how they could make a movie from it.

I also really like his The Incredible Wolf Man. Despite the cheasy title and that he only releases an issue every few months.

WHAT WHAT WHAT

This is holy crap news, but as a dirty foreigner I am worried about AMC's permisiveness towards graphic content. Do they have a history of toning shit down? Becase The Walking Dead needs to be as brutal as it is.

Oh shit, that sounds awesome. I've been whining about "how come no one makes a TV-show out of this" regarding The Walking Dead for a while now. I think you could essentially just use the comics as a script, although you obviously need rework the dialouge. I mean, it seems like the comic would be so easy to adapt into a action/drama series.

And in other uninteresting news, I'm still waiting for the next trade paperback :/

EDIT: Wait, what the fuck? Book 10 is already out? :O

First I must finish up my girlfriend's graphic novels before she takes them away to school...

Once I'm through with Black Hole and Blankets, The Walking Dead will be bought.

Also, a zombie hbo/amc show sounds incredible.

|I've recently re-read these from the beginning through to the end of 8. I'm going to pick up 9 & 10 at the end of this month.

They're unremittingly bleak but I still enjoy them nonetheless. Book 8 spoiler:
I'm wondering where he's going to go after 8 as a large chunk of the main characters have been killed off. It's left me wondering if Kirkman would be brave enough to kill off Rick and the other survivors entirely and leave us following a new bunch.

Blankets is fucking great.

Yeah, that ending reeked of badassery.

Was a little disappointed with the overall issue though. Seemed very short.

Here's to waiting another month. Woo hoo...
